Arctic comes from the Greek word for bear. Arktos. Arctic means "has bears." Antarctic therefore means "has no bears." Though this funny little thing is a coincidence since it got the name Antarctic (which they meant as opposite of the Arctic) before they even knew if there were bears there or not.
