The Predator (2018) might well be the funniest comedy of that year. But for all the wrong reasons.
The latest instalment in the Predator franchise, The Predator (2018) is both a complete mess and an insult to its intellectual property. After being hastily reshot and re-edited in response to awful test screenings, it was left as a pile of barely comprehensible garbage that writer/director Shane Black will never live down. It fails at being either a sci-fi horror or a comedy, being neither scary nor funny.
But throw in some terrible writing, over-the-top slapstick violence, bad CGI, unconvincing autism, and a little bit of controversy, and you have unintentional hilarity gold.

Only point of disagreement, yes as a combat veteran with severe PTSD, this is actually how we would act if placed on a bus together. A combination of dark humor, teen momma jokes, and shows of masculinity against any authority who is not a member of "the club". However everything else in this movie is absolute crap, and makes Predator 2 look like Avatar in comparison.

In previous movies, the Predators were intergalactic, alien Big Game hunters (and literal "alien hunters") who live for the thrill of the ritualistic hunt and have a code of honour (i.e. not killing unarmed "civilians", pregnant females and young ones), who select the most dangerous prey that will pose a challenge and use cloaking tech to stalk their prey, and take trophies afterwards. This movie turned Predators into generic Slasher movie psycho killers in a monster mask who swagger around, gunning down and ripping people in half in a gory mess.

They will only hunt their chosen prey in such a time when it would be "sporting", and some will actively protect their chosen quarry. @@jacobb.9181 it's kind of hard to understand social cues that normal people understand. We tend to obsess over things, especially things that comfort us. Some of us don't like physical contact. @@jacobb.9181 In my experience, the biggest detriment is probably the mental fatigue. I have trouble sometimes conversing with people. I have to maintain eye contact even when I'd really be looking anywhere else, and it makes me so incredibly anxious that I have to be constantly doing shit with my hands, ANYTHING with my hands (flapping them, twisting my fingers around each other, tightly clasping them together, twisting them behind my back while holding both wrists in the opposite hand, flipping a pencil, etc), to help distract myself and keep myself grounded. And I constantly am trying to decipher what exactly people are feeling and how I should respond to appear polite and avoid creeping them out, as well as to make sure I understand what they're asking me. Most people have it come to them more naturally, but to me it's a conscious effort, and the result is that it's exhausting after a while.

Yes you're quite right. Watching it again on Blu Ray I was very debilitated. It's only a movie, after all, and during the pandemic we've all got larger issues at stake. But Predator movies come along once in a while. And to have waited 9 months for this (when booking a day off work in advance to go and see this) I was very disappointed. The issue of course is that, due to the re-shoots, we are seeing footage from the first round of shooting, blended in uncomfortably with footage from the second round of shooting (when the producers had removed the Emissary Predators, the Hybrid creatures and General Woodhurst and reshot the entire final act), and then they embarked on a third round to paper over the cracks. We are left with what CJ has described it as..."a Butchered Frankenstein's monster of a movie". And the pity is that we will probably never see the original version of this movie, and will have to tolerate memories of The Predator in our minds until the next movie comes along. If indeed Disney, now owning Fox, actually do anything with the property!

I'm not usually THAT guy to use the term "ableism", but this movie managed to make it necessary. The complete misrepresentation of neurodivergent people is utterly shameful. The scene with the autistic kid panicking and being left AND then bullied is just mean spirited. The way it treats autism as some sort of utterly crippling load of a condition that is only situationally useful is just disgusting. Yes, autistic people, particularly kids, do sometimes need assistance from someone who knows how to handle them in a serious situation, but those are the exceptions, and you can be DAMN sure that the teacher would know to take care of the kid and look to them during a fire drill. The fact that they didn't is grounds for a LITERAL LAWSUIT. It is literally like if a teacher forgot a student because they could not walk or were blind, assuming a kid had that level of sensory sensitivity that it would overwhelm them. Plus, they would almost certainly have earmuffs! The rest of the group having mental disabilities or some Hollywood version of them is just as disgusting. Hiring a sexual predator to act, and specifically play someone trying to harass a woman is doubly disgusting. Like he said, I could maybe understand giving an old friend a chance, but to A, use them as an ACTOR and not say a sound technician, and B, not tell the actress the guy will be "Accosting"

A good way to do the 'that guy with tourettes is insane!' trope would be to have the rest of the group just go 'NO! HE HAS TOURETTES YOU DUMBASS'. I spent the entire time with my friends absolutely broken emotionally and embarrassed over that my own Mum kicking me out of the house so I didn't tell them what was wrong. After my friends went home I spent hours just walking from place to place barely holding back tears. Eventually my parents found me and asked why I didn't come home, I told them that she told me not to and not long after I got tested and diagnosed with Autism. They need to knoiw whats inside and whats the value so they can tax it. The same applies to packets being sent to US where you have to fill out a custom declaration stating whats in the packet. This packet would never made it trought customs!!! Just a quick note.

I mean aspergers can be like that in some regards. There are some loud sounds I can't stand but others that don't bother me at all. I find it extremely uncomfortable and distressing to look someone in the eye but make an active effort to do so when someone speaks to me that I respect due to it being a social rule I internalized very young. There are times where I completely break down and become an nonfunctional mess due to having essentially bottled up lesser irritants and collapsing under the weight of them. The main issue is that there is a lack of understanding of the progression between opposites for patients who do traverse the spectrum on symptoms. There tends to be a link between them and more progressive (From high functioning to non-functioning for instance) tend to be gradual with behavioral changes as it progresses. While I hate how autism is portrayed in movies and media in general we do have to give them some leeway in that they don't have the time to establish those things. Heck real life doesn't give you that time with most people which is why I outright tell new friends how to handle me at my worst in order to minimize frictions. Still though, autism or any other mental disorder being important for the plot of a movie is a very slippery slope and is typically done best in movies where the whole plot IS the disorder. This movie does it terribly and doesn't need it at all.

I'd like to jump in here, I have high functioning autism, relatively mild aspergers, and mild tourettes, along with a few other mental health issues. My autism doesn't make me incredibly smart, nor does it allow me to operate indecipherable technology. As far as I can tell it just means that I make random links between completely unrelated items, and people are so afraid of being branded as bigots that they just agree with me or just pretend not to notice when I say or do something stupid (it's fucking bullshit. If I do something funny without realising, then just fucking laugh, you might have to explain, but it's much less awkward than dead silence). The aspergers did cause issues with social skills, and I have spent years learning how to properly interact with people (still ongoing), it does make me different, but not always noticeably, but it can cause some serious life problems which seem to be trivialised or even mocked in most media, as just another trait to be bullied for. As for the tourettes, well trust Hollywood to focus on the least common branch of tourettes, and make a huge fuss about it. Most of the time tourettes results in muscle spasms, twitches or nervous ticks, for me it's a jaw twitch. Also, how the fuck was a guy with severe tourettes get accepted for military service? To my knowledge, every single one of my mental health issues could exclude me on it's own (at least here in England), so how did that guy manage to join?
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 5 жыл бұрын
Yep I always wonder that. I went to a recruitment office once and the list of things you're not allowed to have before joining is quite long and very strict. Whenever I see a quirky army person with this wacky exaggerated quirk in a movie I just think about him trying to join and ask myself how.

Hoffman was a method actor and really got into the role so much that people on set became worried if he was alright.

The thing that always got me was that that the main character is enlisted. He is on a mission to snipe drug cartel, then, when an alien shows up, he goes AWOL. Never mentioned again. And THANK YOU for addressing how stupid it is that they bring him to a VA Hospital. Just so you know, VA hospitals have police stationed on premises.

If I was en executive and I heard about the test screening, I would’ve said “Ok, call the marketing guys, this movie is now a comedy”

Based off of my experiences, I just wanted to say... in that scene with the fire alarm, it does make sense that kids would intentionally try to trigger him to have a meltdown using one if his twitches (my family has used the terms for years, I'm not sure if they're accurate, but they're what I know.). But, it's even more likely that seeing him meltdown, the teachers and some of the students wouldn't leave him there- they'd freak out. When you meltdown in a class, people get panicked. Other teachers will likely find out, and teachers will be asking you if you're okay all day... If they care. And if the staff is good at they're job, they'll try to figure out what caused the meltdown too.

I hate the way the Predators move in every movie except from the first 2 (especially the first). Kevin Peter Hall had the movements down to a tee. He had this graceful movement with his hands when using the tech, and the general way he moved. In every other movie they bound around like wrestlers/rugby players.

i hated that they explained the tourettes to the guy as soon as he gets on the bus, but she has to go through that cringe-inducing joke and they don't explain it to her so that joke can happen. It makes me so mad.

Gotta love the Predator Pimpwalk. Seriously sometimes it looks like they're wearing uncomfortable underpants but don't want to show it so they just waddle around trying to look buff.

This was actually my first Predator movie and I really enjoyed it. Maybe going in without any expectations or franchise knowledge really helped me out.

Quick rant for no ones sake but my own: I have a 19 year old brother with severe autism and "Hollywood Autism" makes my blood boil. Everyone I grew up with always assumed Autism ment that whoever had it also got some kind of superpower, IE: Rain Man and ect. It was hard to explain to people, "No, my brother cannot play concert piano or count cards, he just screams uncontrollably when it rains and he cant go for his ride around in the cart on a lawn mower."

The less extreme forms of autism are more pallatable for...well, most people, really. Nuance is rarely treated with the respect it deserves, and the kind of autism your brother has sounds like it would make for a niche drama.

I understand why Hollywood does it, because real autism doesn't necessarily make for good mass audience cinema. I just wish more people (audience wise) would grasp that Hollywood Autism is almost always more like Autism-lite or Diet Autism.

@@Sonji_S I agree entirely. I know movies are for entertainment, but things get wonky in the world when people cite the movie "Sybil" as if it's fact.
