Another excellent, timely interview Katie. Thank you. Maybe I am being prematurely fatalistic, but there are times when technology developments literally guarantees certain changes at some point in the future. I think it's reasonable to speculate that advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics will eventually end the need for many jobs and that would include writers and even actors, making this event a precursor to the major transition ahead. I don't like it, but it just seems inevitable.

All is not lost for genuine, human created art. I'm not in Hollywood - I write for theatre - but I think I can say on behalf of all my fellow storytellers that when we create art, when we tell stories, we pour something into it that is far deeper than any AI can access. Theatre, television, movies, they all exist so that we can, together as a society, explore what it means to be human. A computer can learn to simulate this exploration, but it will never be able to draw us in like a fellow human being. An actor does not just deliver lines and make rehearsed facial expression. Actors tell humankind's story from deep within themselves. What we see as an audience is the result of the actor finding the soul of the character. A soul cannot be learned, deep connection cannot be faked. We'll never be able to look at an AI actor and see ourselves, our struggles, our questions, our joys reflected in its eyes. And as far as scripts, a computer can write a story, but it cannot mine the depths of human experience. It cannot weave a nuanced tale that subtly invites an audience to ask unanswerable questions, to allow themselves to be broken apart in the process, only to find themselves to be more complete humans by the end of the story than they were at the beginning. Furthermore, every script is borne from the complexity of the writer's/writers' personality, life experiences, relationships and influences, of their constantly changing and often contradictory opinions, values, and emotions. Without this always fluctuating complexity in a creator, a script will lack personality, originality and power. Simply put, a computer cannot take join in our exploration of what it is to be human because it is not, nor will it ever be human, no matter how much it learns. So take heart. I believe with all my being that human dominance in storytelling is here to stay.

The things that Ms. Nixon says the creative community fears are not unreasonable. The vast majority of the creative community does not make millions of dollars per project and need to be more fairly compensated for their work, talent, and skills. I support their strike completely. When studio execs say they want to push this creative community to the point where they're losing their houses and then they'll come to the table, I hope the studio execs realize that their compensation depends on this community. As Ms. Nixon says, without them there is no content. Please let us know how we can support the writers and performers in this strike. It will take all of us to help them win this battle with some incredibly greedy studio executives.

Such a good interview Katie. Cynthis is right about cancelling subscriptions. I cancelled my KZbin TV subscription today at $85.00 because I only have it for the nightime talk shows that have been in reruns for months with no end in sight. Also going to cancel half the streamers that are going crazy with commercials (HULU/PEACOCK) they are getting ad revenue........I didnt know Ellie was a TV writer which makes me sad. With Katie and Jay as parents she could have chosen any path.........Hollywood just isnt an essential industry. I would encourage anyone to follow an essential path, healthcare, medicine, research, electrical, plumbing, law, transportation, hospitality. Those are not going away. We can live without a thousand new tv shows. People are going to be returning to audio books, podcasts and going to live plays/theatre. Putting eggs in basket of entertainment is just not wise in the changing world we live. Do wish for good outcome.

Thanks, as an ordinary citizen, I had no idea. I figured most actors made millions,....and had healthcare, and all the perks. On the other hand this same dilemma exists in other types of employment. Used to be a person could work in retail stores, make a living wage and get healthcare insurance. Now low wage earners are barred from working full time, which means we are not allowed to get health insurance. Raises are no longer automatic, ones we get are so low,....we're talking raises equal to a 1/2 a dollar. (50¢)

We are straight back to most large corporations acting like robber barons, treating their workers as disposable, price gouging their customers, valuing only profit and shareholders. Consumers are going to have to teach them once again (because apparently no one learns from history) that there must be a balance between the interests of business with employees and the end users. With so many platforms now, there is also opportunity for Indy films, small production companies, small businesses in general. They think the people who create the products are disposable? Well, we should remind them that we have choices too, and they’re not as safe as they think. Remember AT&T?

Cynthia hit the perfect note. Drescher and Iger convey contempt, while a point of no return looms. Even if settlement is reached, it may happen too late to avert industry collapse. Box office doesn't support Hollywood; subscribers do. And with no new product next spring, subscribers will cancel streaming. Hopefully, the sides can re-establish talks, set a settlement deadline and get to negotiating.

I honestly hate streaming. Sometimes I just want to scroll the channels and not pick what I want to watch. The TV channels on regular TV are trash now and all the good channels need a subscription! There used to be a joy about gathering people together to watch a show on a certain night, or even renting a movie from Blockbuster. Streaming has really changed a-lot.
@b991228 Жыл бұрын
When you make a production be it writing, acting , technical , needed extras or whatever it results in the people at the top gaining revenue for time in memoriam yet the creative artists are are no more than gig workers. Today when I paid to again stream the movie “Chinatown” it seems that only the streamers, not the originating artists that seem to get an adequate return of the purchase I made. I understand that those that consume the products from theaters, TV, online or whatever was the result of a cast of thousands of individuals big and small. I’m not discouraging the ability of some to gain wealth but for the others the cast of thousands of creators should be allowed to attain at least adequate long term financial security. Gross wealth inequality if allowed to continue will be the industry’s ultimate demise.

When people talk about how most actors and writers aren't working all the time they just avoid the core issue. There are simply too many writers and actors for the amount of work availabe. If these unions would cut out the bottom 25% of performers, then there would be more work, more money, and more residuals for all the remaining workers. Yet this option is never even considered.

After 30 years, I might cancel HBO. I watched and loved every episode of SATC. My DVR taped it, I had it set to never delete, and I watched later or whenever I felt like it. So WHY CAN'T HBO RUN AJLT on HBO, too, to accommodate people like me, decades-long paying HBO customers who are accustomed to using a DVR? I have ROKU (nonsmart TV) but just don't feel like learning how to use it. This is probably because my DVR, while only 50% full thanks to the strike, still has probably 50 shows to watch. I truly despise HBO for refusing to run AJLT on HBO and keeping it exclusively on their streaming channel. I've emailed them countless times about this. (I will figure out Roku so I can watch Weird Al’s movie but as a long-time paying customer of HBO, I expect to get a little consideration. Yeah, right!)

Here is an idea for a weekly show: Take several news stories from the week and ask the question "Why" did this happen, why did they steal, why did they kill their family, why did they melt down at McDonalds, why were they speeding, why did they buy that item: house, car, luxury purse etc. Why did they fall off the wagon why did they quit their job, marriage , school. We see the news daily where all kinds of things happen, but we never get to know or understand why it happened...how did this person get to the point where they did what they did. I am a bit afraid of the answer being casual cruelty. I am really concern about why so many people kill or harm their kids...it pops up here and there, but I don't feel we know how huge this is let alone why someone would do these terrible things. Are we losing ground and becoming more evil and addicted and is there a way back. Each month the show could update stories and discuss resolutions.

If they are producing the project seems like they can pay the crew what they deem fit and are in control of the money then turn around and sell to distributors. Matt Damon recently interviewed talking about his model gives back to the crew in profit sharing because he and Affleck were aware of alot of the fat and waste.......Watch the end credits of any project and it is mind blowing to see over 1000 people on a production and it brings to light how much fat and waste there is.....on Cynthia's show And Just Like that, the end credits listed endless drivers......for a 10 episodic set in NYC......I think the general public supports the SAG getting their share and hates the greed of CEOs of the streamers but there appears to be a ton of overage on these productions and the viewers doesnt quite understand why there isnt some combining of tasks. Can the hairdresser not be the stand in when he/she isnt doing the actor's hair. Do we need 100 drivers--why is their limos being sent for the primo actors, everyone else in America gets themselves to work. Do we need 1,000 day in craft services (I know Cynthia Nixon brings her lunch to set)............there just needs to be an overhaul and some thoughtfulness. And in closing, if I was in this industry I would definitely be looking for something else.....
