It’s very interesting the difference between the “mainland”Greek and the Cypriot one. Waiting for more videos about Cyprus and the Cypriot dialect, Σας ευχαριστώ

Cypriots are very good at code switching and even when deliberate asked to speak in Cypriot to καλαμαράες (Ελλαδίτες) will switch to Standard Modern Greek subconsciously to help comprehension. Evident a few times in this video (πχ "σκύλος" instead of "σιύλλος") and very interesting to observe!

I also noticed that at some points they noticed they'd said "και" and immediately corrected themselves by adding "τζιαι". It's not easy to be asked questions in one dialect and have to answer in another!
@iHercАй бұрын
yes I noticed that too, so many "και" and "θα" 😂

No wonder, they are taught standard Greek at school and they watch TV in standard Greek, read newspapers. However, there are some TV shows or series in Cypriot and many people use the dialect in social media and spoken language. The dialect will be spoken as long as there will be people who know it. Younger generation use it less than their parents and grandparents.

@ we do still use it a lot, it's just that it exists in a continuum with the standard

京都も訪れました!きれいな町ですよ。そこ、ギリシャに訪れたタクシいの運転者も会いました。楽しかったです。We also visited Kyoto. It's a beautiful city. We also met a taxi driver who had been to Greece there. We enjoyed it!

Cypriot Greek exists in spectrum with the Standard so there are moments that the speakers innately remove many elements of the dialect while speaking to the person who speaks the standard. Also the fact that some of the questions are made like an interview is important, Cypriots may switch closer to the standard, because it is viewed more of a formal setting requiring also some words which are more formal. A good example is the use of the word πολύ instead of Cypriot πολλά. Other examples: φας instead of φάεις, και instead of τζιαι, βρείς instead εύρεις, αυτό instead of τζιείνον and many many others, this are very unusual when speaking Cypriot Greek, not formal or with a standard Greek speaker.

💯 I noticed too. Subconscious code-switching.

I'm starting to learn Greek, but with Cyprus in mind, what's the best way to learn Cypriot, where and what to listen to? should we start with Greek first and focus on that, and then introduce Cypriot?
