This UK tv Channel 4 documentary was transmitted in 1984. I recorded it back then and glad that I saved it for the past 31 years. Should be of interest to anyone interested in modern Cyprus history. I hope you like it.

You missed all the events between 1960 and 1974. The 13 points, ammendments of the Constitution unilaterally by Makarios without consultation of the vice president Küçük. Bloody christmas or kanlı noel and the evacuation of 104 villages by Turkish speaking Cypriots and their displacement in camps like Hamitkoy Mandres. Embargoes, the Cyprus Crisis of 63, the installation/implementation of the Greenline in 63, the Acheson plan, the battle at Erenkoy, and many more critical events before 1974.

I was shocked and appalled at what the Army did to Gregoris Afxentiou in 1957. He fought at least 90 soldiers on his own for over 9 hours. He wanted his Country to be Free. We had no right to dictate to the Cypriots on how to run their Country. They, the Army burned Gregoris alive. It was Cruel and Barbaric. He said he would fight and fall like a Greek. And indeed he Did. R.I.E.P. Gregoris Afxentiou.

thank you very much for this video. Watching these people talk revealed so much of the character and intentions of the parties involved. Being Greek-Cypriot myself, i hate that term, i felt very emotional watching this. I shall refrain from making too many comments on the players involved because it would be emotive stuff which doesn't add to anything but i will add there was no mention of the American involvement (they wanted bases in Cyprus and Makarios said no) and the Greek Junta (American backed) betrayal was very briefly mentioned. I was extremely offended by the last comments in the video saying Makarios failed as a president. It sounds conspiracy like but very sadly true for the Cypriots. Again, thanks for the upload.

Insofar as I've ever delved into the Cyprus question I've concluded there is no need to mention any foreign involvement, because none of it mattered. For all I care the Greeks or Turks or Cypriots may spend the rest of their days moaning about how the CIA told them they could dump Makarios and get away with it, or how the British somehow "divided" an island that was basically run by mother-state paramilitaries on both ethnic sides before they were even independent, or whatever other foreigner the Cypriots like to blame instead of the schizo priest they called their leader. There are two and only two facts worth considering: 1. Had Greece exercised elementary precaution, they would have been ready for the Turkish assault, 2. Nobody made the Turks invade except for the Turks themselves. And both of these point decisively to the Cypriot issue being directly attributable to the sovereign, national agency of the 3 main actors. All else is scapegoat straw-grasping.

You only have to read the hateful comments in this section to understand that there is no chance of a solution that will bring the Turkish and Greek Cypriots together. The entire tax and revenue system is linked to Ankara online not to mention the latest CCTV systems which have been installed all over the north of the island and with varosha being opened up its seems like Turkey has annexed the the north part for good. Any future negotiations are just meetings to make it look like there maybe a chance of a solution. One also has to understand that with England out of the EU there is no longer a need for Turkey to be a member of the EU and they have recently signed trade agreements to subsidise taxes for goods going to the UK. This is the reality of the situation. Everyone here can argue who started what and who is responsible for what but the Cyprus situation was settled in 1974 with the knowledge and permission of the British and the Americans. Once Britain got their sovereign bases it was end game. The problem is a lot deeper than everyone thinks if only all the Cypriots could see that we have been played by the big powers.

Turkey made Cyprus into a nationalistic and racist country. Turkey created the environment for war to divide the island, even since 1950s. Even Dankdash admitted that it was Turkish secrete agents that ignited the first bomb to kill the Turkish at the Turkish Community centre in 1962-1963. The Turkish secret agents made it look like Greeks. Same for many murders of Turkish people, or maybe they were Turkish in support to ROC. (against Turkish policies) Before this Turkey was abusing the ROC constitution by forcing Turkish politicians (paid by Bakash) to veto all policies that are not aligned with Turkey. (an outside country) So you think the Majority in a country will suffer at the hands of a foreign actor and minority in any country. who do you think is the trouble make to freedom and democracy in Cyprus ? Greeks only care about Democracy, Freedom and Equality. Everything else can be managed.

Cyprus is just another Greek island. No different than Rhodes, Crete or Corfu. And we wanted to unite with our homeland Greece. After being forced to leave Suez, the British wanted to keep Cyprus as their East Med HQ, therefore they started forming Police units deliberately recruited from the Turkish minority. Basically, the British screwed our island in exactly the same way they screwed Israel-Palestine and India-Pakistan.

In actual fact, Britain brought a lot of progress to Cyprus, upon independence from the UK, Cyprus didn’t have chance to flourish before turkey quickly invaded. If British had been in control, cyprus would be whole and Turkey wouldn’t have taken the north. Now all the Cypriots want the British out and the SBAs closed, I agree, I think we should. It's an interesting narrative from the Turkish side that an Island that had almost 80% Greek population and decided after been traditionally close to the Greek culture and civilizationfor centuries to unite with the main mother country, an island which only reason of a 15% muslim population was that those were people that used to live in the Island from the Ottoman Empire's time so leftovers of an occulation, how mental to think that Turkish invaded the Island again in order to protect a 15% population who lived around a dominant christian majority, apart from which they are still Occupying illegally the northern part creating a country that no serious country recognises! Why the Turkish occupation forces are still in the island and why they keep sending new uneducated muslim settlers from Turkey? Obviously to make their illegal and unethical occupation a de facto situation where the international community wont be able to give permission for future deportation of the Turkish newcomers who are supported by the occupation forces but will have to accept the Turkish influence in the Island.

@KoivuTheHab I mentioned the religion as this is the main difference between the two populations. Other than that they have many similarities. The Anan plan was rejected for various reasons. One of them is that the Turkish cypriot community is a minority and fully controlled by the Turkish government, as such it would be intervering in the whole island's politics as a suggested 50-50 power share. The proof to this is that the Turkish cyptiot state is puppet state of main Turkey, Greek Cypriot Republic is independent, not following the same political decisions with Greece. As for the Turkish military, it's called invasion and that's why no other government in the world recognises the occupied side as it's a violent illegal act. Your argument about the Turkish army guarantying independence is your media trick, they want to annex the island when that chance comes. Conclusion, there is no partition, it's occupation. There's global recognition on one side and no recognition on the other, isn't that enough proof? The Turkish government historically makes genocides(Armenians, Kurds, Pontians), not protecting populations, again well known globally. Greeks and Turkish people have more similarities that differences but you have a dictator who is provoking for war at his speeches and actions. Why do you think Turkish government has no allies? The two peoples should live peacefully.

Shame on England and Greece for not joining Turkey to end the massacre but then again why would they, Greece sent its army to Cyprus over a decade before Turkey did but for some strange reason that’s not called invasion, as for England well we tell me where has England been and not caused chaos?!? One mistake Turkey did is send its army min 11 years too late! Remember... war didn’t start in 1974, it ENDED because of the Turks!

Why did the Turks land on the island? Because the Turks living on the island were raped by the citizens of Cyprus. their goods were looted, their businesses stoned and burned. The Turks who worked for them were not given their rights. had been driven around. The pro-Greek Cypriot government ignored them and remained silent. Cyprus law enforcement did not catch the perpetrators. This persecution had to end. What was the reason? using racism and nationalism as an excuse; Turks on the island are hardworking. Earn money, buy a car, open a shop. That's why they were always jealous and attacked the Turks. Now you all know.

@@stesan60 As a person who lived on the Island from 1953-1956 I was aware of the antipathy between the two communities, but the main rift was between British Administration and the Greek Cypriots who were being egged on to demand Union with Greece. This was out of the question for many reasons (a) Greece has no claim on the Island and never has, (b) Britain was given the Mandate after the fall of the Ottoman Empire which had ruled the Island before that time, before that time, the Island was governed my many different rulers, none of them Greek. If you look to the North horizon from the north coast of Cyprus you can clearly see the coast of Turkey, and you would need a long boat trip a good pair of binoculars to see the relevance of Greece. Geography aside. I witnessed the gradual stirring up of hate against British, both civilian and Military for no other reason than to promote an unfair division the gifting of the land to an irrelevant outside power without consideration for the desires of the other actors in the equation. It would have been illegal anyway. After many assassination attempts ( in one case, the Governor) it became too dangerous to employ Greek Cypriot civil servants and their roles were filled by the more trusted Turks. Turkish Cypriot police had long been targets by the now named Terrorist group known as EOKA who now let it be known that any Greek Cypriots who opposed the group would also be eliminated, and so it came about that more of those died than any other nationalities, by EOKA. The British, who, by now, were finding the whole thing a bit of a millstone proposed an amicable Constitution which allowed all the parties a say in the agreement which was accepted in 1960, with Archbishop Makarios, EOKA enabler, as president ( this must have been heartbreaking for many of the other nationalities who had their loved ones murdered by his Group) and the Turkish Denktash as vice president. as soon as he could, Makarios betrayed the deal and any other representation. Then the little Pogrom started and it became normal for attacks on Turkish civilians,( no more Police to protect them by now) Aided and armed by the Greek Army, who were there in large numbers, they began to attack and kill Turks wherever the could find them. Even if they fled to their villages they were not safe and some of the saddest stories were when they were killed by their Greek neighbours. All this before Makarios himself was deposed. Let no one forget, one of his last scornful utterances was "It will be pointless for Turkey to intervene now as there wont be any Turks left to save!" I was in Nicosia in 1974 when he made a speech showing concern about the volume of Greek National Guard on the Island and wanting them reduced and I caught the next ferry to Mersin. Turkey appealed many times to the other Guarantor,ie. Great Britain to intervene but to my personal shame , they did nothing. To feel some real pain and shed some tears visit the village of Sandallar in the North where the whole village of old men, women and children were shot and then bulldozed into the local tip by the followers of that great Christian.?

Simply British hard headiness. Papagos only asked Eden to fulfill promises given to Greece during WW2. If Anthony Eden had agreed with Papagos, Cyprus as part of Greece would have been a member of NATO and the British could have all the bases they wanted there, through a bilateral agreement with Greece. They chose conflict instead and they are still not over the fact that they lost in the end. Turkey had sold Cyprus to te British and according to the sale agreement they no longer had any interest on the island. Turkey, the expedient neutral during WW2 got involved in the Cypriot affairs after the London-Zurich agreements. Turkeys re-involvement was just the final British reprisal against the Greek Cypriots for leaving the British Empire. What is going on in Cyprus today is the result of British policies going back to the 50s. No matter what the Greek politicians may say or do the Greek people will never forget the role our "allies" played on the subject, going back on promises given during their time of need.

'What is the school lesson from all this?' might the teacher ask. Well, the answer is simple: when a "benevolent autocracy' loses its grip from the throat of the rebel dove, changes tactic and simply spreads hate and fear between the communities and if divide and conquer doesn't really work well at least the "benevolent" gets a slice (military bases) of the portion, still a win. After all "benevolent autocracy's" primary reason( having a military base out and nearby the hot zone) is still accomplished. In the meantime, if the island's communities fight each other because of the "loving" hate the "benevolent" spread that suits fine the autocratic regime. Further, Cyprus is the only place that the "benevolent autocracy" was kicked out neck crop but like other unfortunate beautiful places (Ireland, Scotland, India etc) when the "benevolent" red right-hand weakens its grip, the freedome-dove always scratches by its filthy talons as it escapes to freedom. Those scratches hurt and ache, what a heavy price to pay the little dove? By order of the "benevolent autocracy", A Divided Country...

That was a strange conflict. Superficially the reasons were clear. Greeks for enosis, British for colonialism. But why ? The latter stages of the Cyrpus conflict, 1963 to 1974 are easy to understand but not the anglo-greek dispute. What did the British have to lose when Greece allowed them the military control ? What did the Greeks have to lose by letting the British stay in power ? After all more Cypriots lived in the UK than in Cyprus and everything was destined to become EU eventually. But there were also statements from Greek liberal politicians in the early 50s to the effect that a struggle was unnecessary. Plastiras said it did n't make sense, Papandreou also. Then the royalists of Greece would rather be even less belligerent (but in fact queen Frederica became an EOKA supporter when it began). Papandreou who in later years became a Cyprus hardliner ("the" Cyprus hardliner rather) said at the time "Greece is breathing with one British lung and one American lung, a confrontation will be madness". So it's strange, for one who did n't live during the period. What necessitated the EOKA struggle and made it happen ? Maybe there are things we don't know.

Like most of the conflicts in the world from 1945 to 1990 it was all started by the KGB in order to create a market for Russian tanks most of which got blown up by the Turks after the British left and the Greek military dictatorship started ethnic cleansing in Cyprus.
@kajamix
@kajamix 3 жыл бұрын
@@Texasjim2007 There was no "ethnic cleansing" of any type. The Turkish prime minister Bulent Ecevit complained that ... Nicosia airport was closed after the coup d' etat. He had of course more things to say against the Greek juntat but as for ... ethnic cleansing that was the extent of it ! The coup d' etat took place to depose Makarios. The junta was afraid of Makarios because he started making noises against them. Makarios used to be neutral about the situation in Greece but not anymore - not after the dictatorship in Portugal was overthrown and the world's juntas became shaky. But there was no ... ethnic cleansing of any type or unilateral declaration of enosis in prospect. That's a lie and everyone knows it's a lie. If the Turks were decent there were two things they could do: One, accept the coup d' etat and agree with Athens that Makarios was communist (which he was n't of course). After all communism is dangerous for the Greeks as is dangerous for the Turks. Is n't it ? Two, reject the (ludicrous indeed) communist fairytale, liberate Cyprus and reinstate Makarios. As for long term solution of the Cyprus problem resume talks where they have been left. So we have from the Turks double treachery.

@@kajamix That Makarios was buying T-34 tanks from the Russians and started a terrorist group murdering NATO soldiers may not make him a Communist but it's understandable why he might be suspected of being one. The KGB was vastly better funded than the CIA all through the Cold War without any sort of checks or balances on its activities including bribery and blackmail of a lot of people like Makarios who had secrets to hide. Socialists tend to be very liberal with public money they get control of which is why Russia ended up going broke like Socialist Greece. The fact that he rejected several offers by the British for limited self-government in favor of an ethnic separatist terrorist campaign like the IRA is obviously why Turkey had no real interest in restoring him to power when they liberated Cyprus from the Junta.

The British policy in Cyprus was crazy. Forget about the offer of 1915, that was a once through, to make Greece participate in the ill fated Dardanelles campaign. Then when in fact Greece entered WWI on the side of the allies the offer was withdrawn. But in any case Turkey was a dangerous enemy at the time. Things became dangerous later when the British started patting Turkey in the back, to gain her trust. But they did it in the wrong sort of way, inviting the tiny Turkish minority to become equal partners in what was effectively a Greek island. The Cypriots are as Greek as the Greeks living in the houses I can see from my window in the centre of Athens. Great Britain went on to reject general Papagos's plan in 1955 for union with Greece under British military control. This pro-Turkish stand made the eastern Mediterranean into a powder keg and could only help Soviet plans. But what did the Turks want from the start ? What they wanted was to defeat Greece. Force her to go communist and hence become the golden boys of NATO in the region. As for USSR they would n't care less - they knew that the balance of terror meant any such danger existed in theory only. Clever and true ! But GB gained nothing. Absolutely nothing. The cohesion of the NATO alliance was placed in danger. Only the Turks won. The relation with what was going on in other former British colonies at the time and in the Suez canal was weak. Fact is that for Greece the nearest British forces are, the more secure the country feels - under normal circumstances. But the blind British colonialist policies were not normal circumstances.

The only people who had any logical reason to want a conflict in Cyprus were obviously the Russians who wanted to drive a wedge between two NATO allies and open up a new market for cheap Russian tanks Cyprus bought a bunch of most of which got blown up by the Turks after the Greek military dictatorship tried to annex Cyprus and ethnically cleanse it of Turkish Cypriots. In 1974 the Greeks were the only military force, enough to oust Makarios but not enough to repel an invasion and there were no tanks or other heavy armaments. The big mistake of the junta (if one looks at things through their eyes) was their negligence to send additional forces. They could have said to the Turks "we are not departing from the 1967 demilitarization agreement - but it's the Makarios situation - recognize the new regime and we remove the extra forces". But they were fools.

The T-34 variant in service was the later-model T-34/85, equipped with a WW2-era 85mm gun." I confess to not being familiar with the Battle of Harry Hill so I'll have to look that up but the Greek Cypriot T-34 Russian tanks were clearly not imaginary. You didn't mention anything about your own background but if by chance you have any connection with Vlad Putin's military intelligence boys please give them my thanks for whatever help they may have given President Trump in keeping that incredible idiot Hillary Clinton out of the White House. What with the Chinese helping the Democrats so much these days I would think its probably in both the American and Russian national interest to help prevent CNN and its China friendly Big Tech friends from establishing a corporate monopoly here by turning the Capitol Riot into a Reichtag Fire rationalization for one party dictatorship. Germany was much less of a threat to the global balance of power when it was a multi-party democracy after all. :)

I had the opportunity to revisit this interesting documentary again, and there are no doubt many passionate posts in the comments section. Most are typical of the comments made about this intractable problem, and i am not surprised, as they are made by people who are ill informed either as a result of being fed erroneous information to suit certain political ideologies or based on a poor understanding of the actual facts. Ultimately the British could not be seen to have lost the plot in Cyprus, especially since they'd just been humiliated over the so called Suez crisis, so they had to make an example of Cyprus so show the rest of the world that they still had an empire, just as the French were forced to do in Algeria. So they came up with what constitutional lawyers at the time termed an uniquely unworkable independence package for the island, which made disproportionate provisions for the Turkish minority, then blackmailed Makarios with partition so that he would sign the treaty, promptly departed and then stood by and waited for the ticking bomb to go off as the two communities made attempts to understand how to make the mess left behind was going to work. Of course they kept substantial territory for military use, ie spying for the Americans, special relation obligations etc, and there you have it, all set up to blow up into full scale intercummunal violence, which it did in 1964. The rest tragic, so who is to blame, well .....

He targeted resistance fighters and took an oath of allegiance to Hitler. The British knew about his treasonous past. Still they used him when they landed. They found him useful to fight against the partisans who were till then supported by Churchill - being he only effective fighting force in Greece during the occupation. However, as they were against the return of the foreign king, suddenly they became the enemy. The foreign kings that the British and Americans imposed on the Greek people were ousted eventually after about 20 years.

I was born on that beautiful island and have many Cypriot relatives. The modern history of Cyprus is explained by one factor - right-wing nationalism. EOKA was led by Grivas, a right-wing fascist who appealed to uneducated Cypriots that Enosis would be in their interest. In fact, Greece had never had any connection, whether it be political, economic or geographic with Cyprus. Grivas was driven by one thing only - a hatred of Turkish Cypriots. In the early 70s, another right-wing fascist started EOKA B - Sampson. He used exactly the same tactics as Grivas in brainwashing the uneducated into hatred of the Turkish Cypriots. As a result, Turkey used the opportunity to invade, divide the Island and dispossess 000s of families - Make no mistake, the Greek Cypriots are responsible for the mess that Cyprus is - nobody else

@@muzaffersakin3928 Thanks for your reply. Its interesting that my greek Cypriot relatives agree with me - but they are educated. The followers of EOKA were not. Its the same the world over - Right wing Nationalists prey on the ignorant. Don't however think for a moment that I approve of the Turkish invasion of the island. - the Greeks gave Turkey an open goal - but that doesn't make the invasion right - 000s of people were displaced and had their homes and businesses stolen ..

@@rt45ohce it isn't an either or thing. Archbishop Makarios in the 1950s. invited Grivas to agitate against the British with increasing violence by EOKA. The British clamped down on EOKA with internment camps and torture. Then came independence. Grivas came back to kill Turks as EOKA B who attacked Turkish forces in Cyprus. The Turks invaded and seized the northern part of the island. If you watch the film it will show the history.

It should be mentioned that the Turkish Cypriot MP's walked out of Parliament in 1963.... (and although still not a part of it, the Turkish Cypriots demand full benefits from the legal Cyprus government, eg pensions, ID's Passports and other benefits. They receive the same benefits from the occupying Turks) .....It should be mentioned that the atrocities in 1963 started by a provokatsiya incident staged by the Turkish Cypriots (as admitted by Denktas later on). In other words, the Turkish Cypriots demand the best of both worlds....As it stands, they are better off without a political solution . They are behaving as the poor relatives in the eyes of the world to gain world sympathy...They always want.....want.....want

How exactly? The Greeks tried to take over the island by indoctrinating the Greek Cypriots and then by arms. When a powerful foe intervened to prevent it, they ran and left the island to its fate. It was only the presence of the British based in Cyprus that prevented it becoming a new province of Turkey.
@becauseiwasinverted5222
@becauseiwasinverted5222 2 жыл бұрын
@@therealbettyswollocks Unfortunately for your rather overstated self-perception the Turkish strategy had consistently pursued partition, ie division of the island, not complete annexation, and the UK had just about nothing to do with that. In fact, given the truly "British" self-restraint (read: apathy) exhibited by UK forces who idly watched as Turks passed them by in '74, it's truly peculiar how you think you were somehow relevant in any of this, let alone "prevented" complete conquest.

The British were actually willing to give Cyprus to Greece at first, but Greece was too demanding, and wouldn’t accept on the terms (Greece giving kastellorizo to turkey and a small portion of Cyprus as well), eventually the bloody events in Cyprus caught up, Greek Cypriots killed many brits and important ones as well. So they decided to take an entirely different stance in having Cyprus independent and keeping two parts of it ie. Akrotiri and Dekelia.
