Famagusta is considered the most ghostly city in Cyprus. She lives by the memory of her own past, and the wheel of history, like a windmill, with each turn takes us to the heyday of the city. This is a kind of chronicle of Famagusta, the reading of which portends an extraordinary journey. Getting acquainted with its picturesque ruins, you involuntarily realize that Famagusta is the best place to reflect on the meaning of human deeds.
In the fourth century BC, after the death of Alexander the Great, a struggle began for his huge inheritance. The island of Cyprus liked the Egyptian commander Ptolemy Soter, the future founder of a new dynasty.
Ptolemy 2, on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, took a fancy to a beautiful picturesque bay, and decided to build a fishing settlement there, naming it after his beloved wife Arsinoe.
But Ptolemy was not the first to pay attention to this picturesque bay. Even earlier, the most ancient state of Alasia existed here, on the ruins of which the city of Salamis was later built, which existed in history for a millennium and a half.
Later, not far from Salamis, arose a new city called Amahostos, which means "lost in the sands". The city changed its name again during the Roman Empire. Now it has received the proud name of Famagusta, which means Glory to Augustus.
