This is the first time I heard about Aventurine being based on the Romani, honestly. I didn't get that impression and all I thought was "scheming IPC jerkass who would gamble his life away". Both Sparkle and Aventurine are pretty skeevy schemers in different ways. Sparkle calling Segonians with those descriptors while fitting those same words herself is very Sparkle, it seems. She has a habit of crossing a lot of lines even when upsetting people in serious situations while taking joy. Kinda unrelated, but I love the design of Penacony as a vibrant setting where people escape to in a collective dream. Kinda Inception-y. That kidney gut-punch later got me worried for a moment.

I do find it interesting that because the Family was pretty open with all their invitations. We're seeing a lot of people who are at best morally grey, and some that we've outright clashed with in the past. Of course, the goals of the family feel a bit sinister on their own. It makes it feel like our small slice of the universe so far isn't the only thing going on in the cosmos. We have a lot to learn. That scene with Aventurine and Sparkle is also *incredibly* "Midsummer Night's Dream"-esque. The entire rhythm and florid use of language is like two characters who know they're on a stage, and performing for all their worth (which makes sense with Sparkle, because Sampo has already shown the Masked Fools have a lot of theatricality, and it looks like Aventurine plays into all the farce as well). (Also also, people keep calling Aventurine a peacock, because his design is almost entirely peacock feathers. They're just calling a Spade [you know, the cut out on his chest], a Spade).

He's that one really annoying friend that you know in the end you'll have to listen to because he's right, and he knows that too 😂 yes he's kind of a creep, but so is everyone else. We just see him doing it but no one else is outright shown doing the act. Sparkle going around impersonating dead people, Sunday going thru people's luggage, black swan casually manipulating people memories like in her character quest, hiding facts to make you believe her, God knows what's up with Acheron but no one trusts her. Aventurine's taking precautions as he should, knowing the kind of shit going down behind the scenes. But i think people just don't notice that all his antagonism is to your face. He has made himself very clear from the start and has never tried to fool you into thinking he's a good guy. He's never lied to you, like every other character is doing.

like ironically, i LOVED aventurine the first time we met him (even with his arrogant ass like i LOVE that,for me it just came off as someone who was confident with themselves bc they know how good they are - deserved). but for sparkle? she annoyed me a lot bc it’s clear she pursues fun wtout caring much for how others are affected. spoiler (?): i recently finished the aetherium wars quest (after penacony) and i found out that sampo actually dislikes sparkle, even though they are both masked fools. you can find this in a memoria bubble of his conversation with giovanni. It made me respect Sampo so much more as a character.

So I'm just gonna throw my 2c out there. Aventurine's coding is an issue for me. He's pretty clearly coded as Romani, which if it were done well would actually be something good, but unfortunately they seem to have just lifted all the negative stereotypes about Romani/Traveler people and applied them to him without an ounce of critical thinking or greater depth. He's a manipulative, money hungry crook who is a slave to his 'betters' (The IPC who just so happen to have an uncomfortable parallels to white Europe in this comparison) and who is openly sexual (and heavily implied in both English and Chinese to use that sexuality to socially climb) and more than a little queer coded. They've even gone as far as to give him "pretty and exotic" features just the same way as was often applied to Romani people. There's plenty of evidence- you can look that up yourself, but the direct use of words and slurs that translate the same way they are in the Romani language is very clear to me if nothing else is. That said, I liked him from the start and and still like his character. I also like Sparkle's character- and yes, what she says is pretty blatantly racist against Signonians and if you buy into the coding (as I do), against Romani people. That's a huge writing issue and it is one I would like to see Hoyo steer clear of in the future. We can touch on complex topics without just lifting racial violence from the real world. No, I don't think it's appropriate to accuse people who like Sparkle of being racist- most people have no idea about any of this and Hoyo has done a TON to make her a character you like and want to pull for. It's totally fine to like characters with negative traits and major flaws- as long as you aren't insisting those things then ARE NOT flaws just so your fav is "perfect". You can like her all you like (As I do) and still acknowledge that Hoyo's writing choice is an issue and that what she is is insinuating (That is, that "all people" from "specific place" are bad because some of them are criminals or have a 'reputation) is not something good to insinuate even in a fantasy setting. It's a negative character flaw, so let it be a negative. I have liked male characters in the past who are sexist. That doesn't make them less sexist because I, a woman, likes them. I am just still entitled to like them, despite that negative character trait. Here's my thing- if you get all bent out of shape about Sparkle, I hope you are ALSO bent out of shape about Dr Ratio. Earlier in this story, Dr Ratio also makes some very charged comments about Signonians in reference to Aventurine and doesn't seem the least bit uncomfortable with the dynamic at play. If you were fine with it when the "intellectual man" said it but have a problem with it when the pretty girl says it... that's something to dig into. Sparkle was less eloquent, but Dr Ratio was meeting him as someone supposedly on HIS side, or close to it where Sparkle was clearly just trying to get under his skin so he'd leave her alone. Food for thought. Lastly... I think the whole situation with the Sigonians is intended to be the "Bad Ending" Topaz refers to when suggesting what happened to her own planet isn't the worst outcome possible, and the one she claims she's trying to avoid for Belobog. It's the worst case situation for the citizens, the other side of the coin. If that's the case, we're meant to pity and empathize with Aventurine and I think eventually a lot of people will. I don't dislike this idea, I dislike the choice to accomplish that by lifting a real world set of racial stereotypes AND LANGUAGE including slurs, and applying them to the Signonians. Ultimately, this is an issue I would like to see fans hold Hoyo accountable for- not each other. Attacking each other over this accomplishes nothing. What we want is for Hoyo to be more creative and less lazy, and to stop using racially and culturally significant things they don't fully understand to further a plot point in a video game.

@JJKMagic Mostly the same. The coding is there, the messaging is there. I AM glad he's intended to be sympathetic, though. For the record, I really like him. I just want Hoyo to stop playing fast and loose with real people's identities and histories. They have the money and the skill to write original stories, not a rehash of an ethnic cleansing they know nothing personally about. And knowing we we now know about the IPC involvement on his planet, we know the Sigonians did pretty much get set up to die by the IPC- be it through pride, carelessness, callous calculus, or actual malice. (Sorta depends on your reading of the text.) So Topaz is right to view his situation as measurable worse than. Her own planet's.

A character being racist isn't the problem, but they already don't have a great track record with this sort of thing so it's questionable and worth discussion. If they had not used the word at all and simply left it as fantasy racism, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
