Great, thorough, and really well done video, Howard. Thanks you. I’d give the both CZ P01 and all the Sig loads a solid A+. I missed the the premier, due to field stripping, cleaning, inspecting a lubricating my Sig P226, which I will have at the range in an hour or so (BIG smile). It’s an outstanding service-sized autoloader, originally chambered in .357 Sig, but now in .40 S&W with a Bar-Sto barrel. Yeah, it’s not a 9x19mm, polymer frame, striker fired autoloader, rather it’s traditional DA/SA in .40 - shame on me -but with many thousands of rounds fired it has NEVER failed and it’s darn accurate.

The box says 985 ft per second on those 147 grain vcrowns. I know that number isn't exactly absolute but seeing almost 20% higher speeds does not seem likely. All the Vcrown tests I have seen have been consistently impressive on expansion and accuracy (usually them or speer gold dots are the winners), but the nice thing about the sigs in particular is that they are abnormally cheap compared to basically all the other HP ammos I see on top of being a top performer.
@hrfunk

985 FPS is more what I would expect from that load. As I mentioned in the video, I am really beginning to suspect my chronograph's accuracy. That aside, I agree the Sig ammo is pretty impressive!

Thank You for the video. The 147gr is the proper bullet weight for the 9mm JHP's, in the same way for the .45ACP using the 230gr JHP load. Both of these diameter- bullet weight combo has a Sectional Density of 0.16, which more likely yield deeper penetration against 10% calibrated ordnance gelatin than lighter bullet weights of each respective calibers.

Check out the underwood extreme defender +p lite for caliber offerings. Not only are they more barrier blind than the other poplar brands, they penetrate level 3A soft body armor. All while still leaving a hp type wound track and achieving the desired 12-18” penetration. Check them out, they are no gimmick

Thanks hrfunk. I've used the 115gr and 124gr in Walther PPS M2, CZ P10-C and Springfield XDM Elite, all 9mm. Have not tried the 147 but I'm not surprised that pushing the heavier bullet makes a softer shooter. From rifle shooting different weights of .308 in a bolt gun and .223/5.56 in a gas gun, I've felt how the heavier bullet is a softer recoil impulse. Small 9mm handgun + 115gr projectile is like 55gr in an AR-15 that is overgassed. There's more energy there than is needed to push that smaller/lighter projectile. So it's more snappy in the recoil impulse. The same AR fed 62, 69, 77 gr will feel smoother as you get to a better balance between gas delivery system and projectile weight/cartridge hotness. The V-Crown projectile seems inclined to balk at dirty or unsmooth feed ramps, probably because of the ledges in that open crown. It's always run well in my 3 handguns, but the Walther gets picky if the feed ramp is sooty.

Man this video makes me wanna get my p01 out the safe and shoot it. My cz 75’s are some of the most accurate shooting handguns I own, maybe only second to my 1911 or 5” walthers. Recently I’ve switched from +p 124g gold dot and hst to underwood 68g +p extreme defender for my 9mm’s. Not only is it a noticeably big difference in weight savings, those rounds actually perform better through barriers and denim consistently. They travel at 1800 fps and penetrate level 3A soft body armor which no sig, federal, or Speer ammunition can do. Might be worth a look in the future if it permits. Believe me, I wasn’t a believer in this “gimmick” ammunition until I seen enough videos and did my own testing. The lite for caliber underwood extreme defenders are a beast of a round and worth a look for anyone interested. Although I haven’t tested them in my p01 yet. I would send you a couple hundred rounds to test but at around $30 for a box of 20 I can’t afford it lol. It is on sale right now though, but still quite expensive. Worth every penny. Great video as always HR

Lol snake oil...but the mostly water gel tears and water jugs splash...so what? That's not living tissue that comes back in microseconds
@protectiverailroaddad7541
@protectiverailroaddad7541 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanTheWolfman tissue elasticity, hemorrhage, and edema are the factors influencing cavity collapse. All structures in the bullets path are destroyed and/or pushed aside. The flutes or whatever you wanna call them on the Lehigh bullet that underwood uses causes the same or similar disruption in tissue (permanent/temporary wound cavity) as traditional hollow points without the potential short comings that hollow points pose. Water jugs are fun but offer really no data other than how many it will penetrate, and unless you’re shooting Kool-Aid man it doesn’t matter. Yes, people aren’t made of gelatin but those gel test are made to represent a consisted test media for comparison. You need a base for testing and that’s what it is whether we like it or not. I like the test that use 4 layers of denim and pork ribs in front of the ballistics gel because that’s a little more realistic to a two legged predator. MAC did a pretty good test review on the underwood 9mm 90g+p xtreme defender ammo years ago that was quite impressive. So i conducted my own test and got pretty much the same results through a number or barriers and such. Also iraqveteran8888 did some testing through auto glass and other hard barriers which also mimicked my own testing. Everything I’ve said is pretty common knowledge, but people might wanna research these rounds before the write them off as “gimmick” ammunition. Now on the other hand ammunition like civil defense is in my opinion “gimmick” ammunition because while it’s going 2000+ fps and can penetrate level 3A soft body armor it loses its jacket and only a small piece of the base makes it through the total penetration. Other than law enforcement being stuck in their old ways and not being fast to adopt a new bullet design I feel cost is the main reason why underwood ammunition is not adopted as duty ammunition. I’ve seen hollow points from federal, sig, and Speer plug or deform going through test media on several occasions essentially becoming a full metal jacket ball round. I have not seen that with Lehigh bullets at all with the exception of bullet deformation through some of the harder surfaces but it still performs as intended.

So I leant my CZ PCR (very similar to P01 which I also have) to a friend & guntuber like yourself for review. At the time the pistol was fairly new…I think I fired 100-200 rounds before he did, but he reported some strange malfunctions with Sig Elite HP ammo. Lookup Texas Gun Vault PCR for the video I am referencing. I shot a variety of hp ammo after his review, including Sig Elite with V crown, and never had any issues. I can only suspect it was a break-in issue. Anyways just thought I’d share another data point. I collect the classic CZs and have many. The Rami requires the most maintenance as it’s recommended to change the factory recoil spring every 1k rounds or so for carry/duty use.

Back when I shot PPC, I used a custom S&W 3rd generation 9mm in the Auto event, as did several other competitors. We all settled on the 147 grain bullet as the accuracy champ, especially out at 50 yards. Early 147 grain police duty loads had problems with expansion and were prone to over-penetrate, but this was fixed some time ago. Nowadays I don't think you can go wrong with a good 147 JHP from a major manufacturer assuming you are running a 4 inch barrel or longer. They still offer acceptable performance in shorter barrels but I tend to chose 124's in the smaller guns because some of them have occasional reliability problems with the 147's greater overall length. As for your chronograph, I'd be skeptical of those higher numbers you got with the 147's, especially that you perceived them as being a softer shooting load. Had you actually fired 147's at velocities normally seen in 9mm NATO loads, I think you would have noticed. Alaskan Ballistics channel chronographed this load in four pistols, and got a bit lower than box speeds with his Glock 43 at 956 fps, slightly higher velocities with his HK VP9 at 969 fps, , and with his 5 inch S&W M&P got 1,029 fps average. Surprisingly he got a trifle more from his Glock 19 at 1,031 fps. I've seen some gel tests with the 124 grain version which show variable results on expansion and penetration. Hopefully the 147 might perform a bit more consistently. Of course there are a lot of variables in amateur testing. I doubt a company like SIG would release ammo for sale that did not at least do well on FBI tests.

Thanks Brother! I'll soon have a new lab radar chronograph (a loaner from ERJG) on hand to test the validity of my old Caldwell. I suspect I'm going to find that it's become a bit eccentric over the years. With 9mm ( and .40 S&W too) I tend to stick with the mid-weight loads. I like the 124 9mm's for the very reasons you mentioned. Truthfully, the older I get and the more shooting data I accumulate. the less I convern myself with gel tests and the like. I think the ammunition companies are producing some of the best defensive loads we've ever seen and I don't think there's a great deal of difference in their performance. I've also killed enough animals over the years to value shot placement over magic bullets. Thanks for another great comment an Happy independence Day!

I filmed testing the rare 3rd Gen .45 yesterday with Lone Mountain Ammunition both 185 & 230 grain..pistol shot a little low needed a Combat Hold...5 out of 7 in groups offhand standing were all jagged...though I'm no group shooter and was closer. Not positive how to edit the boring footage maybe just keep the decent comments after shots but eliminate all the aiming and just put the shot breaks then the results but idk. Hard w people's attention spans. Yet you, Harrell, and lionquest seem to be able to hold people's attention by being slow and thorough.

Great review. Very well thought out & executed. Appreciate the insight & details. The range demonstration is helpful also. I have to agree that your chronograph isn't reading correctly. I haven't seen 147 grain 9mm over exceed 1100fps even out of 5" barrels. That is just my experience. So I may not be correct. Thank you.

I don't know what it is about the P01 but i find it to be supremely accurate right out of the box even in the hands of folks who have never shot it before. Even in stock form it's just the right blend of ergonomics, weight, and a very predictable trigger. Sure you can tune it up, but you really don't need to (unless you want to).

What's the difference between loads , 115 is +/- 1215 fps. , 124 +/- 1150 fps. , 147 +/- 995 fps. considered subsconic . These are rough estimates, the heavier bullet moves slower.

they also cycle the slides at different rates and the overall cartridge length and bullet profiles differ. Sometimes certain firearms will have a preference for particular types of ammo.

@@hrfunk thank you, I didn't know the profile was different, I do think 124 seems more accurate in My Glocks 19 and 45 and Beretta's . I did notice 115 seems to be a brass jacket, where 124 seems to be copper, maybe it gets a better (bite) or twist from the rifling - Lands&grooves , just a thought ? Maybe you could do a video about that subject 😉. Thank you Sir ❤️

You’re most welcome. It would be difficult to produce a video like that due to the myriad types of ammunition and firearm combos available. Adding to that difficulty is the fact that every firearm will tend to have its own preference (even 2 different specimens of the same model might like something different). Usually a little experimentation will help you to find what your model likes best. It sounds as though you’ve already found one type of ammo it likes. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

Great video. As always, very articulate and informative. CZ is an outstanding brand, but they missed the mark with the Rami in my opinion. It's a bit smaller than the P01, and marginally lighter. Not much gained for a problematic pistol with no rail. May as well stick with the 01.
@willclark3596
@willclark3596 2 жыл бұрын
The RAMI isn't problematic. Just change the recoil springs ($6.00) every 800+ rounds and it run flawlessly. Accurate shooter. I have both the P01, RAMI and P07. I love all 3, shoot all 3 well but i carry the RAMI more. The mags are the real issue with the RAMI. CZ went with mec-gar mags with the P01. They should have done the same thing with the RAMI. I will admit the whole recoil spring thing is stupid but I just swap them out when I clean the gun. No biggie.

Good video, HR. Take a file to that front sight! Lol. I would have liked to know if there was/is a velocity difference from DA to SA. A S&W revolver will see an increase in velocity in SA over DA because the hammer does not "fall" as far during SA shooting. It isn’t much but is is consistent.

Interesting. I’ve never heard of this before. I would just assume if the primer detonates it would project the round the same no matter what. Are you suggesting the primer flash more when hit with a sa hammer? I’m confused here, the hammer falls further in da doesn’t it?

@@protectiverailroaddad7541 It is a proven fact and physics concurs. The hammer falls from two different points on a S&W DA revolver. It isn’t a lot but, it is different. 50-75fps is all but the average will be different.
