Why did the Communists resort to a coup in 1948? Because the popularity they had enjoyed in the 1946 elections had waned and they were certain to lose seats in the next election. And Stalin had become frustrated with the failure of Communist parties in Western Europe to achieve electoral success despite the Soviet Union's aggressive efforts. In Czechoslovakia, as elsewhere, the tactics of subversion were used by means of trained agents installed across society and in government positions. Even the Czech communists balked at Stalin's order to move aggressively to seize power. The demonstrations were largely "Astro-turf" affairs rather than real grassroots events. Many believe that Benes was intended to reject the resignation of non-communist ministers. It is a bit unclear why he didn't do that. Did the US take back loans? Stalin forced the Czech's to decline to participate in the Marshall Plan after their initial intention of joining the program. The 1948 coup assured the final adoption of the Marshall Plan legislation in the senate where isolationist Republicans balked at the cost. It was also a wake-up call to the US government about the threat of Soviet subversion in Western Europe.

@@claudeshistorycourse Yes, indeed. History is complex and often contradictory and as always understanding the motivations of history's actors is very difficult.
