I think the thing that shocks me the most about this agreement is that the czechs were ready and willing to fight, and yet they were sold out by the western powers because they didnt care enough to keep promises they made. It's like you're about to fight someone, and your friends promise to fight with you, and then at the last second they tell the person you're about to fight "actually, yeah you can break his arm"

Its almost same what happened to Poland on september 1939. We thought that we will have military support from UK and France and they did nothing after German agression, thinking that Western allies will come and help, bleeding out at the same time. Its beacuse western allies did nothing during that time, WW2 happened.
@lampionmancz
@lampionmancz 2 жыл бұрын
@@numbsliwa Correct. The Poles actually put their forces to their borders instead of their deffences to ensure that the allies would declare war wich was the reason Poland fell so quickly as their armies in Gdánsk were encircled and the rest failed to organise a good retreat wich let the Germans cross the Vistula river and basically meant that Poland was lost.

@numbsliwa
@numbsliwa 2 жыл бұрын
@@Prauwlet213 you are right. That's true. therefore Poland tried to put up resistance as hard and long as possible, because according to the agreement, the Allies were to come with an offensive from the west where the Germans were practically defenseless at that time, because the main force was concentrated in the east. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany but that was all. But nothing more. That is why in Poland we call that period "strange war". Then, on September 17, the Soviets struck from the east under the Ribentrow-Molotov treaty and the we were really screwed, because in the east there was nothing with to defend against, when the entire forces was concentrated on the western flank.

Which is exactly why every country in the world should have nuclear weapons. America which is considered the greatest military power in human existences understands not to escalate tensions with Russia right now. It's extremely primal. It's every leaders responsibility of maintaining their peoples well being. The DPRK (North Korea) has nukes. No one is fucking with them. That's their plan and it has worked. Finland, Taiwan, Iran, should all be taking notes and planning accordingly. Don't let your peoples fate be in the hands of others.

@matouskrizek1668
@matouskrizek1668 2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbacos Czechia is from almost all sides surrounded by mountains, which are not very high, but high enough to severely limit the abilities of tanks. We made quite impressive chain of small, yet at the time practically undestructable fortresses on the border with Germany. The German army would get massacred if they tried to pass the line. Hitler was supposedly later personally present when his army tried to destroy one of the fortresses during training and failed, noting it would have costen them too many lives to take this country without the Munich Agreement. Our industry including war industry was in a great shape, our tanks were actually superior to German tanks at the time, and the people, remembering the German (Austria) oppression from the end of WWI, were mostly quite determined not to be oppressed again, similarly to Ukraine right now. However, fighting alone, our defeat would be only question of time. We were ready to stop Gemans for months until our allies would come to our aid (or more exactly come to Berlin), we were able to fight against Poland again to secure Těšínsko (area they wanted), we were able to stand against Hungary to defend Slovakia, but we did not have enough men to take all the three at once. Karma came for our French ally, as Germans two years later used our tanks and experience from our fortifications to conquer it.

The order of surrender didnt make it thrught in time. So when a German officer come to the gate a private who had a post there told him to stop, the private with weapon ready shot the officer when he drew his pistol (private was wunded). Whole barracks were put on alarm. A fight broke up. Germans had 1200 troops there, anti-tank gun and armord car. Our boys only had 250 man. The battle ended when Czech comander finally reached his superiors and gave the order to lay down weapons. No wonder Czechoslovakia didn't like it. Moreover, the Polish king gave up this territory to the Czech lands in the 14th century and from then on for 600 years this part of Silesia was part of the Czech lands. The rest of Silesia was lost by the Czech lands in the war with Prussia. As far as I know, they did not fight Poland for this territory and the 14th century treaty was not abrogated either, so I don't see why Poland should claim Czechoslovak territory or the territory of the Czech lands, which became neutral for some reason after WWI.

Thank you for this excellent telling of what happened to Czechoslovakia and the lessons from it. The mentioning of the "Czech Line" is especially crucial to this discussion, as like you rightly said the surrender of this to Nazi's eliminated any chance that Czechoslovakia could defend itself (and I highly encourage people to go visit them, makes for an excellent nature walk too). It can be said there is a sliver lining to this agreement; by avoiding conflict between Czechoslovakia and Germany in 1938, most of the country avoided the horrors and destruction that obliterated much of Europe. Prague and much of the rest of the country have some of the best preserved cities in Europe. I enjoy visiting the home of my parents.

Appeasement was not about peace, but playing one side against another. Britain and France were hoping Germany would turn their attention toward the Soviet Union. They would fight a massive war, giving Britain and France time to mobilize and fight the weakened winner of that war. Stalin thought he’d escape this trap and ally with Hitler. Younger people use it normaly as any other Czech word (jít do kasárny/kasáren, vidím kasárny etc....), but older people, especially men who served in military, say only kasárna in all cases, which sounds weird to young people.

Czech here, tganks for this amazing video, but I'd like to correct few things. The occupation of Bohemie and Moravia was more of an invasion like in Crimea than Hácha's request for help. Also the coup in Carpathia was unsuccesful, instead it got occupied by Hungarians Also a speculation, I believe that if allies backed us, we could've prevented Hitler right at the start. His generals urged him not to be so stubborn about Sudetenland and he himself acknowledged that he's glad the occupation had gone peacefuly when he was observing one of the bunkers/fortresses. I believe his generals would have made a coup Also Im glad that today Johnson and Macron are doing the right thing in Ukraine by backing it. Germany took the role of traitor these days.

Yeah i wouldnt call the germans traitors because of whats going on in ukraine. You make it sound like they send weapons to russia when they did already send some to ukraine. Turning foreign policy, domestic policy and basically the defense and energy sector by 180 degrees doesnt happen in a short time if a country wants it or not. German militarism got completely crushed after ww2 so the army and defense sector where completely underfunded with that comes the issue that the german army doesnt realy have equipment to spare like at all. They already sent the small amount of soviet weapons they still had and the tiny amount of heavy western equipment they have couldnt even properly used in ukraine because it takes training and logistics that ukraine doesnt have for that stuff. What would have even been the alternatives? Massivly rearm years in advance before anything remotely happends and whenxnobody had any idea that it would happen? The increase in defense and political changes germany goes through right now wouldnt have been supported by anyone international and domestically not even a year ago.

There was no winning that. The fortification was not yet complete, and there was almost nothing on the Austrian border as nobody expected the Anschluss and there just hadn't been time to expand the defences. Czechoslovakia was well armed and defensible for its size and could make Germany bleed very badly, but ultimately there would have been no winning a war of attrition at a 5:1 disadvantage (especially since the regions with the armament industry would have been the first to fall). The battle plan was to make Germans pay for every inch of territory, but ultimately it was just a protracted fierce fighting retreat all the way to Užhorod eventually. The only way to win was to engage Germany in a two-front war, which is why Czechoslovak diplomacy invested so heavily in the French alliance, and why Beneš gave up when Daladier reneged on it.

The Munich Agreement did not fail. It was Chamberlain's decision to form an unworkable pact with Poland that led to war. He should have pressured the anti-Semitic regime in Warsaw to allow a referendum on Danzig.

Czechoslovak fortresses were 2nd largest and strongest at it's time. Bunkers were always well situated in terrain, which was full of hills, mountains and forests. Sad fact: Many Czechoslovak officers and soldiers stationed there committed suicide, when they heard about Munich Agreement. Another fact: When Hitler saw Czechoslovak fortresses on his eyes, he said "Thank God, we did not have to fight them."

In the 1960s, however, changes in the leadership in Prague led to a series of reforms to soften or humanize the application of communist doctrines within Czech borders. The Czech economy had been slowing since the early 1960s The Dubcek government ended censorship in early 1968, and the acquisition of this freedom resulted in a public expression of broad-based support for reform and a public sphere in which government and party policies could be debated openly.
