In this animated historical documentary, we will cover the extraordinary story of the Czechoslovak Legion. This army unit was recruited to serve in the army of the Russian Empire at the onset of the Great War, but the Russian Revolution stranded it in the hostile country. With the hopes to regain the independence for Czechoslovakia, the Legion needed to return home and had to fight its way through the Russian Civil War, fighting both the Bolsheviks and the Whites.

Dokonce 1. světové války zůstal věrný císaři a legionářem nebyl.

My grandpa wasn’t the hero type. He ran from the battle. He was one of the soldiers in AustroHungarian army. He eventually made it back to Slovakia got married to grandma and went on to the US. His Moravian great grandpa on the other hand probably fought at the battle of Austerlitz, when old Napoleon first attacked. Not every generation can be a hero.

ENG translation: My great-grandfather was, during WW1, a young lieutenant in an artillery battery, he fought in battles of Sochi river (Isonzo, Alpines) in Austrian-Hungarian army. After the armistice, he stayed in the Czechoslovakian Army, where he shared his combat experience and around 1924 he was honourably-discharged from his service. During German occupation (WW2) he was not part of a resistance, he was a mayor in one village in Moravia. After Lidice and Ležáky massacre, he with few fellow men from village hidden a weapon cache. They never used them and it was supposed only to defend them in case of any further nazi reprisals against civilians. After the war and change the regime to communism (1948), he was put in jail, interrogated and tortured for over a year, albeit no charge was put against him nor any sentence. No official statement or reasoning was given. One day, he was just simply "kicked out of prison". In our family, we guess it might have been because of his anti-comunistic beliefs, military experience and perhaps because of his seat as a mayor (one of those man who knew about those weapons was a fervor communist). My great-grandfather died few years after his release due to his poor health. He was a good man and his legacy lives on.

I love how Cogito responds to everyone complaining about the flag. Yes, Bohemian and Polish flag were indentical prior to Czechloslovakian independence from Austrian monarchy. The blue triangle was added either as a compliment to ally tricolor, or to symbolize Czechslovak union (blue being the Slovak part) and also a kind of panslavic ideology, represented by the tricolor.

The Czechoslovak foreign legions... probably the most famous modern Czecho-Slovak military force, they are regarded as heroes in my country and rightfully so, they fought for a common cause and their long journey home to a newly established country is a story worth telling! There is however one other group of Czech and Slovak soldiers that oftentimes gets brushed over. - the soldiers who remained loayal to the empire until the bitter end. They too gave their lives for their country just in a slightly different sense, they too had to fight like lions in unimaginably severe conditions, against the Russians and other great nations. Let’s not forget about THEIR sacrifice as they too diserve praise and perhaps a bit of pityness just like all the other brave human beings from all across the world that gave their lives for their countries! May their sacrifice not be in vain as they were all the same in their very essence, courageous people who went into the fray again and again only to be tired by the pointlessness of the war. Anyways great video as always guys! I really appreciate you took the time to take a look at the history of our small, yet beloved nations.

Some people also say, that the Tsar's family was executed, because the bolsheviks were affraid, that the Czechoslovaks were going to save them. There are also personal stories like soldiers having to leave their dogs behind when boarding the ships and some of the dogs trying to swim behind the ships and soldiers jumping back to the water to safe them. This message is for everybody who think that there is a mistake in flags. This flag is correct!! Today it is a Polish flag yes but in 1918 it was also a flag of Czechoslovakia. In the past it was a flag of Kingdom of Bohemia and Czechs took it again in 1918 after creation of Czechoslovakia and unfortunately Poland took exactly the same colors. Czechoslovakia later added a blue triangle which represented Slovakia but from 1918 - 1920 Czechoslovakia and Poland had the same flags. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Czech_Republic

Thank you for this video. I appreciate it. My great great grand father was a Czechoslovak legionnaire so for me it is a personal thing . In 1915 he was conscripted to Austro-Hungarian army and in 1916 their unit was forced to surrender to russians. They expected to be executed by Russians but fortunately there were some czechs on the russian side who convinced them to join the Legion. He was injured many times but he made it and in 1920 he returned home. His wife thought he was dead because she just knew that he was captured by the Russians. It was a huge surprise for her when he returned home a few years later.

Amazing video, thank you. My grand-grandfather called "Theodor Káňa" was in Czechoslovak legion. They (including grand-grandfather) fought through the whole Russia, went through Siberia to get back home. When bolsheviks disarmed legionnaires in exchange for safe way to their homeland. And then they betrayed them, my grandfather captured cossack saber made in 1906 during fights with bolsheviks, and brought it home. Today we still have this saber. But most interesting thing is that, he documented their whole journey on photos with camera. We are only people yet, who seen this rare photos. Few times museums wanted to borrow them to the celebrations of Czechoslovak legions. But grandfather refused them. Also in the WW1 died my another grand-grandfather called "Tomáš Blahoudek" in the first year of the war on the eastern front in Poland. And also grand-granduncle "Julius Káňa" who sadly died in the last week of WW1 on Italian front by shot to the chest. Both of them fought in Austrian-Hungarian army. I know, many people have its own heroes in their families, but I think it's interesting. Greetings from Czech republic.

I know this video is old, but here are some additional facts: 1)The legion had its own postal service, it was the most effective postal service in russia at that time - having only lost 4 packages, because of an accident in a harbor. 2) Some soldiers “deserted” from the legion to fight alongside the reds in the russian civil war. For example Czech writer Jaroslav Hasek (Good soldier Svejk) did that. 3) A small group of legionaires actually reached murmansk and they travelled to France. 4) The last one - and the saddest bit of information - When legionaires from Russia returned, noone home actually cared, all the glory was recieved by legionaires that fought in france and italy.

Nicely done, yet another great video about my country. Thanks. Nearly every Czech today had at least one relative there and it's still a very controversial part of our history, though people that proved they were there were eligible for a lifetime rent (so considered heroes). I always liked the story, especially how different soldiers joined the legion by multitude of ways. My great-grandfather Antonín Gill joined somewhere in Russia after the ship he served on (Kaiserin Elisabeth) has been sunk in Tsingtau (China) and he spent over four years in two Japanes prison camps. And now imagine the counterfactual history of the world in which Kolchak used that gold to buy the Czech Legion to win the war with Lenin...

Third 60secs after upload - I just love these. Was reading into the Czechoslovakian rise post WW1 and how they fought Czechs and Slovaks fought both with and against the Central Powers and Allies and also in the Russian Civil War. I also complement your reference to 1620, as well as the information of Russia using regional minorities against the Ottomans. Props on the good pronunciation of names! I quite sympathise with these soldiers who fought to create a strong nation and how they managed to make it a functional democracy that unfortunately was abandoned by France and Britain in 1938, not even 2 decades after gaining independence. You did a very good job on this video in all aspects. You ought to be proud. I really loved the graphics in this! One suggestion however. I wonder whether on the next video, you could do the war borders, for instance how the Germans had occupied Belgium, and so on possibly as with a rough dashed line with the colour of the nation occupying the region as well as the 1920 borders too, wherein Poland amongst others are independent while Austria Hungary was dissolved.

At the beginning gold was carried in 80 wagons, when ČS Legion seized the gold, it was carried in only 28 wagons. 52 wagons of gold was spent by russian government and later by Kolchak. Gold was used to buy war equipment or stolen by russian officers and soldiers. Also Kolchak stole something. Gold was guarded not only by ČS Legion but also by russian and later bolshevick soldiers - guards were mixed. 13 boxes of gold was stolen by russian who guarded the gold. ČS Legion and russian forces counted gold at the beginning and at the end of period when gold was in czechoslovak hands. Except for these 13 boxes was nothing missing.
