I agree with your thoughts exactly. The Dunlops had a better rhythm tone. That's the first thing I noticed. Richer harmonics and midrange bite.

Thanks for this comparison. I had done my own as well. Been using Dunlops for 3 years now. For lead, D'Addarios have more treble, but for rhythm work, Dunlops have the chunk and mid-range power. I use Dunlop 11-50 exclusively now for rhythm.

I have the same Charvel as you, only in hot pink/magenta color. I just polished my frets tonight using some scotch bright sponges (don't push too hard or for too long), then some pencil erasers, one firm then one soft. Then I cleaned the whole fretboard using Dunlop 65 polish on a t shirt rag. Made a big difference. Mine was dirtier than yours. Thought you might like to know.

Personally I use the dunlops because they -feel- better than the d'addario''s. This is also the reason I once switched from Daddarios to Ernie Balls, the EB's would feel better, not really sound better. Dunlops do sound better on my guitar through my rig (and to my ears) than EB's though. Indeed they got much more mid-range punch. (Which in a band situation would be ideal, since that's where you sit)

Hanneman was a long time D'Addario user, I wish I could know his personal thoughts on the matter, but Kerry King even has a Dunlop signature set, and if they both went to Dunlop then it must be more than a business move.

@@anahowana Yep, our favorites were done with D'Addarios. I've seen the KK set they're pretty nice and comes with 2 different gauge Low E strings.

@@ascendantmaster yes indeed, it's because Kerry has a couple 7 string Warlocks, it's a winner set, if you are a 7 string player you get to have a set of 7 string for cheap, and if you are into low tuning you can use the low E on your 6 string axe. Gonna get me a Dunlop set next time, for now I'm having a string fest with Dean Markley, LaBella, Pyramid, GHS, Elixir, and Daddario NYXL and XT, yeah I'm strings hungry ))

DiAddarios sound darker and thinner. Dunlops sounded clearer and brighter with more upper midrange. I definitely liked the Dunlop tone better!

In recent years, I rarely pick up a guitar. But what surprised me is that I have Daddario 9-42 strings on my guitar. already three years. Of course they do not sound very pleasant, but without rust and none of them torn. Before that I tried playing Dean Markley Blue Steel Electric for a long time. Their sound is better, but they live much less. Daddario record holders are long-livers.
