I've done a few reviews of D&D 4e books that I own. Let's put it all on the table and go through my entire library of Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition books and see which ones are our favorites. I'll share which ones I like the best. Which I like the least. And which I may not have even looked at.
And I want to hear your thoughts along the way.

I am so thankful I had the foresight to save most of Chris Perkins' Dungeon Master Experience blog to hard drive before it was taken down during the post-5e forum purge. A lot of the advice within is evergreen, but now that I am entering my 4e phase it's also basically the DMG3 we never got.

Pretty neat trek! I've been playing various D&Ds (and other RPGs) since I got a Red Box back in '82, when I was 8. I initially skipped 4e as I was really enjoying 3.x and didn't feel like swapping into a new edition that seemed way too video-gamey and not enough tabletop-y for my tastes. Aside from all the cash I'd put into 3.x. Anyway, long story shortI think I came across some of your revisiting of 4e, and it's been enough that I've been slowly (very slowly) picking up some of the 4e stuff because it's interesting to compare, and even take from for the 5e stuff I started running. So, thanks!

I love the Wizard's Presents books as well! When 4e was announced and those hit the shelves, I bought them as a pair and read them like 20 times each before passing them around my group multiple times. Just skimming them made a few of my fellow players shout for joy ("PALADINS CAN BE ANY ALIGNMENT NOW! YES!") and when the game fully released we went all in and stayed all in for years.

I used to subscribe to the digital tool - it did a great job of scaling the creatures and encounter just by increasing the CR. Overall 4e didn’t get enough love. It’s too bad they didn’t use an open gaming license. It probably wouldn’t have died the way it did.

Brilliant video, nicely done; certainly given me some ideas for my next purchase! 😂 I’m DMing my first 4th edition game for my friend and his sons, and the Fallcrest setting is a great place to start - thanks for the recommendation.

I've played through Cairn of the Winter King a couple of times! Once in 4e and once in 5e! It was pretty fun both times, though I don't remember finishing the adventure in 5e or why we didn't finish it.

skill powers are nice whenever your class utility options aren't that great. two i like are third wind, lvl 6 endurance, gives you a daily minor surge with upside, and insightful riposte, lvl 16 insight, add +3 to your attack after missing as a free action

Open Grave was the first 4e book I purchased. I had been playing 5e for a little while, but I saw it and I thought I could use some of the dungeons in it for my 5e game.

Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Emporium is a good collection of unique magic items to be given out to happy players. Even has a couple 4e versions of artifacts from AD&D which is nice. I got my copy from Noble Knight so don’t know if they have another copy right now😮

My cousin-in-law's played the PC game Neverwinter. I was going to convert it to 5e for a one-shot because I've only ever known 5e. I'm definitely going to pick up essential 4e books to get a better understanding of 4e.

Great video. We picked up most of the pre Essentials books as they came out. I do have some of the Essentials ones, but I’m not keen on the change they made, it felt like they were pandering to the people who complained that 4E was different.

I GMed Revenge of the Giants in 2010. It was cool but some things in the story needs to be works. But I prepare all the maps for physical plays. I scanned and prints every maps. It was a lot of work.

The Free RPG Day modules are at least four: 2008 _Treasure of Talon Pass_, 2009 _Khyber's Harvest_, 2010 _Bloodsand Arena_, and 2012 _Dead in the Eye_. I presume there was a fifth one for 2011, but I don't know if it was made or distributed, nor its name. I would be curious to have more information about it eventually.

PH 1&2, Arcane Power, Martial Power 1&2, DMG 1 & 2, Divine Power, Adventurer's Vault 1&2, Tiefling book, Dragonborn book, Monster Manuals 1-3, Heroes of Shadow, Heroes of Elemental Chaos, Heroes of the FeyWild. Other books are OK, but your mileage may vary. You also want the Dragon (digital) magazine articles that apply to 4th edition, because there's a lot of information and specific articles in there that affects specific characters (warlocks suck without the article "Cast a Deadly Spell/I Sold My Soul for THIS?")

It is a shame they never came out with DMG 3, which was supposed to focus on high level and Epic level play...

Thanks for sharing your collection. Seeing how WotC is trying to be 'politically correct' and thus dropping the Dark Sun world, that would mean that 4e is probably the last official release on the world of Athas. Good luck and hope that you can get those soon.

I agree. I bought the two Dark Sun books back in the day and they are very good. Well worth picking up if you can find them and you’re willing to spend a bit!

The skill powers are basically extra utility choices. It's extra options more than a hamper.

Agreed. I saw them as actionable skill expertise, that players could use in their character development.

Careful about talking about which books were "essentials". Skill powers were useless. "It's all about combat." Yeah, that's what skill challenges were all about. Or, if you're really into ROLE playing over ROLL playing, try actually doing it. There's tons of stuff that can be done with a good DM willing to play with the rules instead of just playing within the rigid rules. You get one use of Item Daily powers per Milestone (every even encounter).
