I'm not at all bothered by the reuse of the word 'Conjure' in the names of those spells. Conjure is a generic enough word for that kind of thing, and it allows any 5e statblock ever published that lists those spells to still have a valid thing that isn't the old version of the spell.

They had to have a spell called conjure animals etc, for backwards compatibility, if they weren't married to the all your old adventures will work then they could have called it something else. But if there is an old adventure with an NPC that has Conjure Animals, and you get rid of the Conjure Animals spell, then it is not compatible. I would prefer biting the bullet and just getting rid of the spell but they committed to the bit.

A large part of keeping the names is purely for backwards compatibility. They NEED these names to be somewhere since some previous stuff references them and they obviously don't want the problems that come with the previous designs. Not an elegant solution but a necessary one.

Honestly, while I do think people in these comments are right in quoting backwards compatiablity, but also it would be so a player can't pick up the 2014 version of the spell too. To explain fully: they mentioned, when you activate the 2024 PHB, use any conflicting rules from the 2024 system, including classes and subclasses. But if you have a subclass you want to play that _doesn't exist in 2024_, say, the Necromancer Wizard, you have to update it to be in line with the other subclasses (subclass at 3, New Necromancer Adept, etc.). But If there's a spell in 2014 that _doesn't exist in 2024_, I would assume I could use it in 2024 with no changes, unless they gave me the information for modifying it. This would be especially true for newer players or players who aren't as tuned in with changes. So they might come to the table with "Conjure Woodland Beings" and attempt summoning 8 pixies or whatever.

They are probably keeping the names of the "conjure" spells to make it easy/clean for future convention/organized play. It is easy/clean to make a blanket rule that if a new version exists, then you can't use an older (a.k.a. 2014) version. This is very clearly the influence from the former Paizo employees who have come to work for WotC, since this is exactly how Paizo dealt with similar situations for their remaster... for their "society play" (the equivalent of WotC's organized play) you can't use a spell from the "original" 2nd edition if a remaster version exists.

I'm definitely not playing with the concentration on Spiritual Weapon unless the Spiritual Weapon is its own thing going after the player, freeing up the clerics bonus action.

I imagine I'm going to homebrew magic items to allow clerics to use Spiritual Weapon without concentration just like for rangers and Hunter's Mark.

I mean… Flaming Sphere is a BA with concentration. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to ask Clerics to use concentration.

They probably reused names of spells to retain 2014 references. So a 2014 subclass that gets the spell will get the updated spell.

The change to conjure spells did seem weird, you weren't alone thinking/feeling that. I think the positive feedback was due to removing the wonky creature selection/ combat bog down.

The Guidance change is a MASSIVE debuff.

I think its only a debuff if you have no idea of what you wanted to be good at. If you do know you could for example potentially help someone make multiple persuasion checks now.

If only 5e had mechanic to represent multiple creatures as a single statblock, to balance the conjure spells and clean initiative while also keeping conjured creatures as a actual beasts. Oh wait, there are such mechanic in 5e, it called swarm creatures. Why don't they replaced conjure animals with generic tasha-like statblock of "Gargantuan swarm of medium beasts" with 3 different options, like any other new summon. At this point Fireball is as much of conjuration spell that "summon fire spirit that deals 8d6 fire damage in the area and disappears" as new conjure animals. They feels artificial and dull.

Temp-HP Polymorph either needs a drawback or it's going to get banned from tables.

Once they lose all their HP they're knocked out. They revert back to their own form and have to start making death saving throws. Sure, some creatures that only had a few hit points will last longer, but it also means that the people it's used on will lose their own hit points when attacked and the temp ones are gone. If it's anything like the druid wild shape they won't get the creature hit points as temporary hit points.

I find it funny that some people who watch your videos were having a hard time watching the videos because of whatever speed you were running them at & I'm over here with add-on tools so I can run videos at 3.25 times speed unless the speaker talks excessively fast like Ben Shapiro whom I listen to at 2.5 when I do listen to a video he is part of.

I don't like the nerfs for polymorph ,shape change or simular spells. Unless you give an amount of temporary hit points equal to 10 times the creature's CR level or more then it's a total nurf.

It should be a nerf. The spells are too good. There’s nothing wrong with nerfs as long as it keeps the balance of the game good.

@@seppa193 it really doesn’t need to kill the game. The balance isn’t about making everything even but getting it closer. If one of the options is so good, Ex. Polymorph, that EVERYONE takes it because it’s too good not to, then it needs a nerf. That’s just how good game design goes.
