I've been trying the 1st edition Dungeon Masters Guide (1979) to solo and it's been working quite well so far. There's tables for random room by room dungeon making, tables for making random towns, NPCs, tables for random treasure and magical items, etc.

That's all you need , 1st edition and an imagination. Every later edition is already covered in the first. It gives you the freedom to change or make rules as you see fit and make up things that will make for fun gameplay. Glad to see someone using 1ed these days.

Another resource I really like is the Mythic GM Emulator, if I'm not running a module. The pdf is out there to download, but I think you gotta buy the second edition

5e DMG is my only WotC book, and picked up out of curiosity mostly, but have been quite surprised by the amount of content in here, particularly as a solo player!

also what is often overlooked: the tarokka deck. An in-universe random idea generator that can be used as a storytelling aspect. Your adventurer (you don't even have to create them yet for this first session) is at the bar and a witch or whatever takes out their tarokka deck and does a reading. You just use the cards that are drawn (you only need 3 or can do more, look up tarot spreads) as a random idea for the rest of the adventure, that way you can still use the pre-conceived adventure idea to create your character around, but don't need anything outside of the adventure or universe and it's still a playsession and a good way to start.

Yes indeed there are tons of d&d supplements out there, that can be used by soloists... The point of this series of vids is to highlight what is in the 3 basic 5E books for people either just starting out who don’t want to buy a ton of stuff or d&d folks who already have these books.

Lots of very useful commentary here for someone like me who bought a bunch of source books a while back and is only getting into DMing recently. Thanks so much for making this video!

I've read the DM's guide a few times and never put these items together. Thank you for helping bridge the gaps and reveal some fun things between the threads.

Thank you! Excellent source for solo details as well as a good reason to reinvigorate my desire to read the 5e DMG again. Thank you for this treasure

A lot of these items have the quality of seeming obvious...in retrospect. I'm Watson following Holmes, nodding about how *now* it all seems so obvious.

Im from the future and I can safely say this and another vid from another youtuber encouraged me to pick probably the only wotc book one could use and its the 5e dmg. If anything, i'd say like you once said gamemaster/dungeonmaster books whether it be from adnd 1e to 5e are something worth looking into for solo rpg players.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the dungeon generator in the appendices after chapter 9. I use it all the time.

Great Video, thanks a lot. Is there a possibility for translations of your Solo GM Guide?
@GeekGamers01

Glad you enjoyed the vid. No idea about translations as I don’t know foreign language publishers of RPGs. What language(s) interest you & what are the leading publishers in that language?

This is a great video! There are some ideas that I’ll definitely use in my solo RPG career. Do you personally play DnD 5e solo? I find it very hard to sit down and play 5e solo because of the rule sets. I yearn for some crunchiness but also cringe at the thought of the slow combat and prep that often comes when I play dnd solo.

So glad you enjoyed the vid. You identify some real issues with dnd solo… I don’t reach for those rules when I am soloing, no-but lots of people are interested and the principles of approaching heavy rulesets apply to other rules

@@GeekGamers01 Thank you for replying! The real key to any hobby is engagement and preference. That will always be subjective. I will definitely be using the DMG more in the future though.
