I do wanna mention, I've been playing a wizard for just under a year now, and I want to emphasize to wizards in training just how important the utility spells are. I've made this mistake when I first started, I very quickly reached for damage spells, but as the game went on I realised that I was sorta missing the point of the class. If you are all about slinging fireballs, it's a good idea to just go with something like a Sorcerer, because ultimately metamagic makes them just straight up better at that sort of thing. However, regardless of that, the wizard is a very fun class. You can have a metric buttload of spells, because you aren't limited by your memory. That means, you have the license to pick up a lot of situational spells, stuff like knock, featherfall, identify and etc. It's completely fine to only have a small handful of damage spells. Enjoy young apprentices, and remember - a Wizard is only as good as his prepared spell list.

I just got a hilarious idea: what if you used the "Minor Alchemy" trait of the transmutation school and turned a tiny bit of silver into an iron filling, used suggestion to make a vampire or werewolf swallow it, and then watch as they reel in pain at this piece of silver inside their stomach a few minutes later.

I was thinking, just like the plastic things with the breakable attachments (they are made by machines, you snap the connectors to force them out of the 'cookie cutter form', and then piece them together), you have someone make sheets of wood like that, for arrow heads. Then you convert the entire thing into silver, gently snapping off the arrow heads, attaching them to arrows, since that's relatively quick to do. You could produce silver arrows for your ranger, or bolts, daggers, swords, etc. all with ease. As it's technically a single object (with the individual arrowheads or whatnot still attached to it on the ends, only needing a light snap to break free), you can convert all of it to silver with a single use, and keep it transformed. Then they break it free, attach it to their arrows, and now they have silvered arrows for the cost of the time to make 20 wood arrowheads.

damage dealing spells are a trap. summoning and controlling the environment are much more useful, and much nicer for the rest of the party. let the fighter have the glory with him dealing hit point damage. blind, bind, confuse, restrain, move, cripple your enemies, and empower your allies, and most important: take spells are have unique effects only achievable by being a wizard: teleportation, summoning, illusions, the entire school of divination, be creative. Blasters are boring both for the party, and for you to play.

What about animate dead or create undead? Because i have a super good idea with them Skeletons and zombies may not be the most powerful monster alone by raw stats But take a look at them You have extra helping hands on your side The spells i mentioned did not say anything about the monsters' actions being limited to what they can do as attacks So you can order all of them to take help actions with your other party members Or if possible Order them to help then grapple And then order more to grapple the same target It works better with medium and smaller sized creatures though Large and above are a little harder It also doesnt say in the combat rules that multiple creatures cannot grapple the same target They cant stack advantages for help actions sure But multiple grapples and separate escape saves limited to an action and you are virtually cheesing by not letting your target do spit

Warlocks are technically outside the list of spellcasters since they use pact magic. In the PHB page 164 spell Slots multiclassing lists the spellcasters and warlocks are not counted, to my understanding, a level 5 character that is a level 3 wizard and level 2 warlock means they have access to second level spell Slots and a pact spell slot. The spell slot from the wizard take a long rest to recover and the pact spell Slots recover after a short rest.

Also giving armor proficiency is a nice bonus even if that fighter dip keeps you very much glasscannon. I wouldn't personally go for more than 2 levels thou meaning that you wouldn't get eldritch knight.

The Wizard Probably the most complex & OCD of all Classes They'd probably have their Spell Books wrapped in plastic bags or Ziplocs, if possible, or have ever page laminated, or kept inside magic bubbles or Pocket Dimensions or something I'd be one of those Wizards who would keep several backup Copies of Spell Books, Scrolls, etc, having them stored in safe places only I, or someone I can inexplicably trust, can access Replacing a Weapon & Armor, would be like replacing a TV or Game Console, like an Xbox - thanks to Cloud Storage & account retrieval Unless of course, said Weapons & Armor are one of a kind - but, you'd figure that a new Weapon or Armor can be Enchanted in a similar manner But replacing a Spell Book, would be like replacing a Smartphone, PC or Hard Drive - since they'd contain information that is exclusive to that particular Book Loosing a Spell Book, means loosing a one of a kind thing Plus, if it ends up in the wrong hands - now that information is accessible to someone else, for better or worse This is why I like The Book of Shadows, for Warlock - loosing this Book, means preforming an hour long Ritual, to get a fresh copy, with all information intact, while the old, lost or stolen copy, is destroyed, keeping it out of the wrong hands

I've always read this mechanic of copying spells. Is it possible to have a scenario where you defeat an enemy mage, and copy some of his spells?
@SimonGrandell7 жыл бұрын
I would say that one level of cleric is an excelent multiclass option for wizards you gain some armor proficency. And if you take the knowledge domain you will gain expertise in two inteligence skills which is great for the only class that is likely to actually have a really high inteligence xD. The cost will be slower spellprogression and a need for atleast 13 wisdom.
@jackiesingleton23517 жыл бұрын
SimonGrandell,,,,, I was thinking about a dip into Cleric mainly for a shield (that +2AC stacks with Mage Armor right?) and a little bit of healing, the more people who can get someone up who is unconscious the better. It would add a lot of utility IMHO. Plus there is something wrong about a wizard in armor to me. How big a difference would it be between armor from a cleric dip Vs Mage Armor & a shield? Mage Armor=13 +2 shield +Dex mod(prob +2) =AC 17! I know nothing about armor so have very little idea what you could get with armor but seems like a 17AC is as high or higher than a lot of classes at least early -mid game. But again this all just theory since I have only played one session years ago with 7 people who were drinking & am just now trying to get into it, I watch a lot of D&D online, Dice Camera Action(all of it) & Out of the Abyss, DMed by Greg Tito(all) & of course Acquisition INC. Anyway if you know those rules about if a shield works like that or anything else I would really appreciate any knowledge you feel like dropping. THNX. P
@SimonGrandell7 жыл бұрын
You can use a shield if you take one level of cleric and there whould be no problem with mage armor. Just remember to have the other hand open for your magic focus/component pouch. Another benefit of wearing armor is that you save the spell slots that would be used to cast mage armor. But to answer your question of how big a difference it would make from mage armor +2 dex mod makes a difference between +2(Half plate) up to +5(+3 Half plate), +5 dex mod makes a difference of at most +2 with either a +3 studded armor or a +3 half plate(disadvantage on stealth checks). But your wizard with a shield whould gain Half plate=15 +2dex mod + 2 shield=AC 19! and saving level one spell slots. Just one thing don't multiclass before you reach level 5. You want those 3rd level spells asap. And it should be easier to get access to better armors at level 6 then at level 2. Another great thing about diping one level of cleric is the cleric cantrips especially guidance.

You can't. You can only have wizard spells in your spellbook. Even though some wizard and ranger spells overlap, you can only learn them by finding the relevant spell scroll version of the spell or a spellbook that contain them. That's if you're following the rules strictly of course. Ask your DM, maybe he or she would let you do it.

This doesn't exactly relate to the video itself (although I really enjoyed it)! Can someone explain to me how Recharging and Recharged Abilities tend to work? Thanks in advance, this is probably an excruciatingly dumb question, but I only started playing D&D recently.
@DontStopThinking7 жыл бұрын
No worries, Rach. There's nothing dumb about asking a question, ever. Recharge ability are monster abilities that can only be reused after a "recharge" occurs. So for example, a dragon's breath weapon has the recharge value of 5-6. - At turn 1, the dragon uses it's breath weapon. - At the start of turn 2, the dragon automatically rolls its 1d6 recharge dice to recharge its breath weapon. If the dragon rolled 5 or 6, the dragon succeeds in recharging and can use its breath weapon again on that turn. - If not, they will have to wait until the start of another turn and reroll the 1d6 recharge dice again. Sometimes the dragon is unlucky enough to never be able to reuse its breath weapon again until it's dead. gets 5 or 6. Mephits' breath recharges at 6 (they need to get 6 on their 1d6 recharge roll), so they have less chance of reusing their breath weapon.

For a level 1 wizard I should have 6 but only prepare 3 For a level 2 I should have 8 & prepare 6 Level 3 how many spells can I have prepared/ unprepared for only level 3 & so on?

You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast (Known Spells). To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. Level 1- 6 known (free)- At 18 INT( +4 Modifier) it would be 5 prepared. At 16 INT (+3 Modifier) it would be 4 prepared. Level+ Modifier Level 2 two free = 8 known. At 18 INT 6 prepared. At 16 INT 5 prepared. Level 3 Two free =10 known. At 18 INT 7 prepared. At 16 INT 6 prepared. You get 2 free spells per level for your spell book. Known spells in your spellbook include any spells you acquire while adventuring or buy from merchants that you copy to your spell book. (unlimited if you have the Gold, Scrolls, and materials to copy them to your spellbook)

Can you cast your signature spells like regular spells (expending spell slots) or just really once per short/long rest?
@DontStopThinking7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can still cast your signature spells like regular spells.

Could you possibly do a Sorcerer guide? I've recently started a campaign as one, and it's still a bit hard to get the hang of.

It's coming, don't worry.

If I'm a level 1 Wizard and I have an intelligence of 17 so my modifier is +3 then I would be able to prepare for spells correct? If I only have two level one spell slots at level 1 why can I prepare 4 spells I do not understand. I thought the spell slots were kind of like the ammo or you're prepared spells in a way or the amount that you could prepare

Spell slots are how many times you can cast spells of a particular level and doesn't directly have anything to do with how many spells you can prepare. As stated in the book a lvl 1 wizard starts with a spellbook that contains 6 level 1 spells from the wizards spell list of the players choice. It is from this list of six spells that (in your case) you can prepare 4 spells after every long rest.

Are wizards ONLY able to copy wizard spells into their book? My impression was that it didn't matter what class lists the spell was on, so theoretically, a wizard could have every spell in existence in their book.

Quoting the book, it says “When you find a wizard spell”, so I’d say it has to be a wizard spell.

Thanks! (Probably should have just checked the PHB, but I didn't, so thank you!)

Generally, yeah any spell works. And then there’s the Druid spell list.

Briarpelt, they could copy any spell into their spell book, but they would only be able to cast the wizard spells.

Question about wizard. I have found a new spellbook with plenty of spells I can cast some of them and some of higher level I cannot cast. Right now I don't have the time and the ink to copy them in my spellbook. Am I able to study those spells in this spellbook as well as in my spellbook. For instance in the spellbook I have found, there is the spell Fly 3rd level. Lets say I have the components to cast it. so can I cast it or I absolutely need to find the time and the ink for transcribe it in my spellbook?
@corgborg12885 жыл бұрын
El Duchesne You have to put it into your book to cast it. If it isn’t in your handwriting, then your character won’t be able to decipher it to cast the spell.

I think the part about copying spell scrolls is wrong. Reason being the section in the DMG stating the need to roll an arcana check to successfully copy the scroll. Scribing a spell into a spellbook from a scroll requires a 10+Spell level DC Arcana Check, or the process fails and the scroll is wasted.
@DontStopThinking6 жыл бұрын
That is actually a variant rule for casting a spell from a spell scroll from page 140 of the DMG. It is an optional rule that you may choose to implement, but you are not required to do so.
@Masterfully16 жыл бұрын
Awesome, cheers.

Kind of a late response. But copying from a spell scroll to your spell book, and there being a chance of failure, isn't a variant rule. Refer to page 200 in the DMG under Spell Scroll. Mishaps when attempting to CAST from a scroll is a variant rule, but copying from a scroll isn't.

Question: If you were the lead editor of the next edition of D&D what would you add, remove and/or change from the current iteration to improve the new one.
@DontStopThinking7 жыл бұрын
I guess the first thing I'd like to do is to find a way to make first level characters less squishy. Having unconscious characters out of the game for 1-4 hours can really ruin the flow of the game and break the game's tension. There should be an additional rule where a character under the proper care of their companion can regain consciousness within 5 minutes.

My House Rule is that a First Level PC has an extra couple HP based on their Race: Halflings, Gnomes .............................................4 HP Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Tieflings, Aasimar......5 HP Dwarves, Half-Orcs.............................................6 HP Dragonborn........................................................8 HP Warforged.........................................................10 HP These are only gained at First Level, not each level. It helps a little, and is not too unbalanced. It's basically "How many HP did you get just by living a normal life, before you became an Adventurer ?" For example, I joined the Army at 20 years old. I didn't have zero HP going in, I had like 5 HP.
