Fighter always been my favorite D&D class, there's something about a character who uses only there cunning and skill of arms to survive in a world of monsters and magic. My personal favourite in 5e is the battle master archetype, the toolbox of maneuvers at ya disposal is just wonderful.

Hello everyone! I have started a human variant fighter(battle master)and took shield master feat at level 1. I'm planning to take medium armor master at level 4 and alert at level 6. After that I'm taking four levels as a barbarian. My character has STR 16 DEX 16 CON 14 INT 8 WIS 10 CHA 8. It's not optimal but I'm liking the idea to have a fighter that can sword&board, sneak, shoot a bow well and basically is the best athlete of the group. Plus tank like a boss! 👍

Eldritch Knights are not actually restricted to purely Evocation & Abdjuctation: They are just required to have some of their spells (about half) in that branch. The others can be literally any wizard spell.

Based on your rating of the Eldritch Knight, I'd say you misunderstand the Archetype. An Eldritch Knight is probably the single best tank in D&D. You have access to the "Shield" and "Absorb Elements" Spells. Combine this with plate armour and a regular shield, you end up at 25 AC at lvl 3. Or a few points less, if your DM doesn't give you plate yet. Still... that is massive. So the EK really should have 3 or even 4 stars in defensive magic.

Personally I was thinking of making an Eldritch Knight based on The Witcher, essentially a bounty hunter/mercenary who travels the lands in his constant goal to maintain the tenuous balance between civilization and the more magical and paranormal beings that have often existed in the world long before humanity/whatever other civilized beings have come into existence. Because someone has to act when the balance shifts in one direction or the other.

I found a good build for a ranged fighter. Eldritch knight's weapon bond allows you to summon you weapon, make it a javelin, an arrow, or a bolt allowing you to never run out of ammo.

Important to note that comparing the improved critical to battlemaster, you need to go through a half dozen deadly battles and make nearly a hundred attacks in order to gain the same amount of extra damage as a Battlemaster, and if you take a single short rest, the battlemaster gains all of that extra damage back. Not to mention the battlemaster can decide when to apply the extra damage since they can wait to activate it after they've confirmed a hit, while the improved crit triggers randomly once every 20 attacks. The Champion is just a really weak subclass that favors simplicity over strength.

I posted a really long comment asking for help since I'm a new DM. But it doesn't seem to show up, so I'll try to make it shorter. I'm running the Lost mine of Phandelver campaign. I'm new to D&D and so are my 3 players. I gave my players an NPC Cleric to aid them. In the very first combat encounter which was a 4 goblin ambush they did really bad and lost a lot of health. They captured a goblin, which can be interrogated and has useful information. They did try to interrogate it, but they hardly asked it any questions. One of the players told me in the second session it seemed like the goblin didn't have any information at all, and even before that I felt it was my fault the players didn't get the information they could've had. The players seemed to be in a rush to save two NPC's who were clearly kidnapped by the goblins in a previous ambush, so they only took a short rest even though they probably needed a long one. I felt it was my fault, however I didn't know how to tell them they could take it slow without killing all the tension and .. basically just... giving them the answer. They decided to leave the Cleric with the Goblin to guard the wagon they were supposed to escort. Heading to the goblin hideout and getting caught in another ambush there since they kept loudly talking as they approached the entrance, alerting the hidden goblin guards. They managed to win, but all of them were below half health, and the monk was on 2 Hp. Skip forward and after a lot of confusion and the monk nearly dying being now on 1 hitpoint. They stumbled upon a part of the cave filled with 6 goblins, one of which is the second in command who had one of the NPC's who he would use as leverage if the fight went sour. The PC's nearly won, but the monk dropped to 0 health trying to finish of Yeemik. Resulting in three Unconscious PC's and 1 unconscious NPC. I already decided the prior session which ended after the first ambush that I'd send in the cleric to save them. (Yes Iknow I bailed htem out Deus ex machina, but i felt it was partly my fault they failed.) The cleric came in, managed to finish of Yeemik and stabilize all characters. After rolling the 1d4 for everyone, it seemed only the other NPC would wake up soon. (No I didn't fudge dice) So I said that the cleric waited for the other NPc to wake up before they'd drag the players out together and would set up camp somewhere nearby the goblin cave, not too close and not too far away. That is where the session ended. What do I do now? They need a long rest, but since htey only killed half of the goblins I can't just pretend everything will be exactly the same as they left it. But there is nothing in the book for if the players flee halfway through or something like that. Any suggestions? Also how do I .... get a message across to players without saying out right that. "oh this goblin has information, roll a die and I'll tell you everything. no questioning needed." "Oh that ledge will collapse if you step on it." I tried to say that the ledge seemed instable... THey even though the wolves would go after them, even though I tired to make clear that the wolves got upset "SEEING" the players.

Hi, Luna. The Starter kit is actually quite hard for new players. If they're having problems with the goblins in the first chapter, then the following chapter will be much harder for them. What you can do is to encourage roleplaying. The goblins are not monsters in videogames. They are devious, cunning, and most importantly, they're cowards too. It's not out of character for them to immediately surrender and negotiate when they are out numbered.

I see, I'll try that. But then again, I'm not very great at Dm'ing yet. So I don't know if I can pull that off without making it seem very.. clunky and ham handed. Do you have an suggestion for an alternate campaign for new players? I don't really want to stop this campaign, however we aren't very far in and if my players keep nearly dying each time I don't think its going to be much fun. Oh, I know how tanky they can be. If you were to put the magical defense stat on top of the defensive feature stat, it would reflect their defensive capabilities better. Also, if they take minor illusion as their level 8 spell, they'll be even tankier.

Thanks Cymo. It is possible to get above 20 only if you're a level 20 Barbarian. Otherwise, there are currently no official rules that allows it. You get your first ability score improvement at level 4 if you stick with the same class. So if your character is below level 4, then the highest ability score you can have using the standard array or point buy rules is 17. You can get 20 only if you're extremely lucky and rolled 18 and added a +2 ability score bonus from the relevant race. You can refer to the character creation video to see if you've made a mistake building your character.

Don't Stop Thinking there are magic items which when used increase a stat permanently by 2 and also increase the maximum of that stat, this can be used to increase stats all the way to 30 but not higher. Examples are the Manual of Bodily Health or the Tomb of Understanding as an example.

There's also items like the Belt of Giant strength which sets your stats to a higher amount than 20.

D&D is a game where you can do whatever you want. The rules are there as a guideline for those who want to keep things balanced and fun for everyone. If you/the dm wants to let your characters be over powered then let the murder hoboing begin! But generally 20 is the max, unless the dm says otherwise or you get an item that just auto gives you +2 to your already 20 ability. It's to make sure people don't only max out their most important ability, and get insane amount of hits and other crazy shenanigans :P

Superior critical doesn't improve damage that much? Man, the chances really add up with so many attacks, and if you're flanking. Total chance to critical is 15% per attack. If you're flanking you get advantage so it's really about 30%. Now I dual weild so at level 20 that means I can attack 4 times, but also if you two hand, great weapon fighting allows you a bonus attack if you critical, so the champion also lends itself well to that play style. So that's like... pretty much a guaranteed critical at least once. Usually twice. Oh, and it's active all the time... so while percentage wise you only really increase your weapon damage by 10%, every other class will burn through its resources whether they be spell slots, superiority dice, sneak attack dice, etc... the party's champion will still be going strong. The champion subclass is pretty insanely underrated. Also, always felt this particular subclass lends itself well to multiclassing. You get heavy armor and shield proficiency to abuse the AC mechanics of the game. A fighting style. An improved chance to critical. An action surge. And some light healing from second wind. All for 3 levels. Go for 5 levels and you get an extra attack and an ability score improvement. Works well for classes that don't have many hitpoints or get extra attacks... like every spell caster. So play fiend warshipping armored up warlock hexblade, getting bonus hit points as your opponents fall to a mighty 8d10+ charisma mod eldritch blast every turn.

Tbh I think the protection fighting style is kinda dumb. I know it's actually pretty good, but I think you could do something different with it to make it fit better. In a campaign I'm in, a character I was playing (before they got eaten by a gelatinous cube grumble grumble) was a dwarf paladin, and we decided to homebrew it so that protection style allows you to basically jump in the way of an attack but now you are the target/you take the damage if it would hit. I think it just felt a lot better and more thematic to "protecting" someone.

You can choose the variant Human for your race. It gives you one feat of your choice. You can pick the Magic Initiate feat, which gives you two cantrips and one 1st-level spell from a class spell list of your choice, in your case it's the cleric class. Or you can take the Ritual Caster feat, which gives you a ritual book with two spells that you can cast as rituals. Again, you can pick these spells from the cleric class spell list. It also allows you to copy spells you encounter into your spellbook, as long as the spell is on the spell list of the class you chose.
