D&D: DID DRAGONLANCE JUST SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH MASS COMBAT?

Yes, back then TSR came out with the BATTLESYSTEM. Some of the original Dragonlance modules had scenarios intended for it that were intended to be played as part of the adventure. The original version used cardboard counters but the revised second edition turned it into a minatures system, essentially turning D&D into Warhammer. It's actually a pity that this new game hasn`t sold well as it could have formed the basis of a mass combat system for D&D that actually works.

It's been a YEAR and I have never seen ANYONE play this boardgame - even on KZbin... Even in LivePlays of the DragonLance book they skip past it. It wasn't in the VTT either, even if it would be easy to program a boardgame. I didn't buy it because I never saw it used.

The sad part is that Dragonlance was released just as the whole OGL thing blew up and the background suffered as a result of all the bad publicity. The game was a casualty of this and a lack of support by WOTC which failed to market it properly, it probably doesn`t fit into the current "go digital" model the suits are currently following. Hopefully, now that it can be picked up much more cheaply people might actually start using it in Shadow of the Dragon Queen, realize that it`s not all that bad, and start homebrewing it into other D&D campaigns. To adapt it to another adventure scenario just needs new cards and a lot of the TSR-era Battlesystem material could be used as inspiration.
