I got this one idea from a web comic which depicted Orcs as actually being quite eloquent and intelligent. But the reason they seem stupid to others, is because they aren't fluent in Common. Based on this, I have an idea for an Orc Wizard, who's books are all written in Orcish!

Well, there's the Eberron and Wildemount Orcs, no Intelligence penalty - although they've updated the Volo's orc so that it too lacks the penalty and gets the option to extra skills.

You guys missed the best class ever, Bard. I had a half-orc with long flowing blonde hair. He was an evangelist of Gruumsh and was converting humans in various villages to worship the one-eye. He used charm and other tricks to pull off fake miracles while the rogue picked pockets in the crowd. He was like a televangelist minus the "tele". He had high charisma but low intelligence so he was convinced that Gruumsh was a god of love and compassion. Some of his notable miracles were cutting fish in half to multiply food and pulling peoples belts tighter to eleviate hunger pains. Good times.

The possibility for fun is endless especially if there's an actual wizard in the group and they find that kronk has updates their spell book for them.

*eyebrow raise* messing with a wizard's spellbook is worse than thieving from other characters, and a lot of DMs ban interparty stealing. Don't get me wrong it's a funny idea, I like it a lot in that fun / interesting character way. But Wizards can't change spells without their spellbooks. They can't do rituals. It's expensive to fix what they're able to fix- which is only recommitting what's in their head to paper. If a wizard doesn't have it in their head or their book they've now lost it forever short of finding and copying it from something else. In other words you're straight up crippling their class by defiling their book. Hiding it as a prank or something is one thing, but damaging or getting rid of it is malicious. ... of course now I'm realizing maybe you meant just adding to the book. Which would be a waste of some expensive page space, but wouldn't be too bad ^^' still a bit expensive and wasteful though. ... yeah, there's a reason wizards are encouraged to make a spare or two if they can, though it's expensive and time consuming.

It was cleared with the gm that drawing stick men in the margins or words of encouragement wouldn't 'damage' the books/spells or hamper the actual wizard in anyway it's just a bit of fun for a cool rp aspect between 2 players. The orc would also have his own spell book so spare paper etc would be supplied when needed.

I've got a1/2 orc wizard (rolled stats) who plays to the 1/2 orc stereotypes to get his opponents to underestimate him before decimating them with his intellect/spells.

For the Orc, Cleric of life. Chances are big that a wounded ally is close to an enemy, so you can use aggression to move towards your ally. It makes you a more mobile healer than most healers. Let's also not forget that the Cleric of life gets heavy armour and clerics tend to be pretty good at smacking things anyway

I'm playing a paladin right now, but I rolled for my stats and got a 3 for int. It's been fun having my steed be twice as smart as I am. To make matters better, it's a mindflayer campaign so the enemy is having a really hard time keeping track of me in regards to the rest of the party. Elder Brain can't spy on you if it cant sense were you are.

I'm honestly surprised you didn't pick moon druid for half-orc. Savage Attacker and Relentless endurance compliment the animal shapeshifter druid for both damage dealing and even more tanking.

The orc ability aggressive is amazing for any melee combatant. Being able to dash as a bonus action means 60 feet of movement which makes you very hard to kite, and very sticky. It can be the difference between not doing damage in a turn and doing full damage. Also helpful in chases , you can chase things at 90 feet per turn double dash, 120 if you're a barbarian 5 or higher.

I loved my half orc wizard, you get a social skill and a once per long rest life saver. Sure the crit bonus is kinda wasted, but in early game when a stray arrow can take you out relentless endurance makes everyones life easier. You can't forget the roleplaying opportunities as well!

I've often though of running an Orc along side a Goliath if the opportunity arose simply for powerful build and party diversity. The -2 int /w point buy at 8 making it 6 is really a gift to the player. Play it up. However the Powerful build is something that only the Orc, Minotaur, and Goliath (if memory serves) get access to in the RAW. If your DM doesn't overlook strength and what it can get away with mechanically those three races specifically bring a lot of versatility outside of combat and sometimes inside. *Throws boulder*

I play a Half Orc Ranger, and I absolutely love this combo. I use a spear (DM made a dex-based spear for me from CoS) and I get in there and destroy things. The relentless endurance makes her fearless since she knows she’s allowed one really big hit before she drops and can warn the healer.

I really like orc/half orc clerics. I feel like it fits the shamanesk aspect of the orcs. if your rolling for stats and get a 16, thats totally fine to start out with. you might not be as good as a wisdom based class. but I like the role play aspect for it a lot more then the mechanical stats. altho, orc barbarian and fighter will always be a classic

I love playing half-orc Bardlocks. Great Old One or Raven Queen take mask of many faces and agonizing blast ofc. With bard (usually lore) and Half-Orc racials makes for an incredibly versatile all around power house that perfectly fits my usual background story.

I once played with a orc barbarian with an intelligence of 4, he carried around a pony who tricked him into waiting till he was full grown to eat him. Note: pony not horse.

Gotta say Fighter. Champion Fighter in particular. Wide crit range, lots of extra attack die potential. Tanky Barbarian is also solid, yeah, but the absolute murder frenzy of a wide crit range high attack number Half Orc. Orc version gets that nice movement and can haul around all the heavy fighter gear and other stuff without too much issue. I also think Powerful Build is underrated... if you stack it with stuff. The DM has to let you really take advantage of your lift load. If you can lift and swing a big statue it should have some bonus to it. If you drop something huge on an enemy- that should really hurt. That kinda thing. A lift Bear-barian can be really amusing if you run with it. Lets be honest, your half orc isn't going to be the brains of the outfit unless you're intentionally playing against the class leanings. The worst that generally comes from a -2 to int instead of a -1 is... what? Sure, it can be bad in some situations, but it's a 1 point difference of bad you're already bad at for big lift and some very useful combat movement. Really, if you're using point buy or rolling your stats you might even be able to compensate and not even have that bad an int still if you're that concerned about it.

Wouldn't be surprised if in a 5.5e or 6e that they get rid of negative stats upon level up. As someone who's getting interested in D&D it doesn't make sense to lose stats upon gaining a level. Maybe a temporary stat loss via an ability, but who knows. Maybe they'll release variant orcs and make orcs available as part of the core races in a PHB.

... I think you're a little confused. Or I am about what you mean. Your stats don't change by those amounts at every level up or anything. It's not +2 str +1 con -2 int for an Orc at level 1, level 2, level 3, et cetera. It's a one time bonus / penalty applied at character creation. You apply that after you've determined your stats by your DMs prefered method. Otherwise an Orc would become as dumb as an animal in a small number of levels and then hit 0 intelligence and die.

Yet a smart orc could trick players or NPCs by pretending to be dumb before chopping off their head or something.

oh yeah a smart Orc is entirely possible. They just have a bit of a handicap of it at the beginning. As for not knowing, no worries, we all have to start somewhere :) that's why I figured I'd explain. I wasn't kidding about dying if you have 0 intelligence by the way. It can happen. If certain ability scores hit zero you just die. It can happen because of certain monsters or poisons. Things like that.

Well, Eberon book did remake orc stats, no more -2 Int and instead Intimitation you get to pick 2 skills from short list that includes Intimitation. For upcoming campaign, friend's first try out to GMing, I was planning to make orc wizard, but after thoughting more about the character and setting (urban game in monastery town of god who dislikes arcane magic) I'm making Barbarian/Druid. Who has one cloth, his cloak made from skin of dead animal and old blanket. We start from lvl 4, so my character is lvl 1 barbarian and lvl 3 druid.

I've run a couple half-orc clerics, but i like the life domain for them, the half-orc ability relentless endurance has proven a potent combo, to me at least, a situation occurs that would wipe the party? Not the half-orc, and with the life domains channel devinity i get everyone back up and ready for more.

Fun character idea - Half Orc Outlander Fighter, who's a bit of a Rustic/Land using type, dressing with bones, pelts, maybe even has a handmade spear or the like for emergencies when he needs it. He uses the tribal based enhanced strength of his orc heritage to hunt effectively, to train My general idea with it is to make him a generalist with Defense Fighting Style, two hand axes, a spear, shield and a great axe. Maybe even a Bow and Arrows. The idea he uses Medium armor too, favouring mobility.

I honestly like full blooded orcs more than half orcs. I like the role-playing options. I always think that people are giving my adventuring party the side eye. Like "oh my god. They actually trust that orc?"

If UA is allowed, then I would say the Fighter's Subclass of Brute for Orcs. Depending on the DM, you could even go Warlock (Fiend Patron) for Orc and sort of build a Tanarukk.

And don't forget that half-orcs need not be half-human. The A0 retro module "Danger at Darkshelf Quarry" featured a half-orc whose other half was dwarf. And for classes, Hackmaster 4th edition included a brigand class that was a mix of thief & ranger. Perfect for half-orcs!

I am currently playing an Orc warlock hexblade. We rolled stats, and I did dump int(8) and str(10 w/ bonus). Its really just for flavor and because I want to RP a brutish orc who's a bit slow, loves nature and thinks hes insanely beautiful, but I believe orc beauty is backwards so hes actually super hideous.

The only one I've tried is a Half-orc Moon Druid with a Barbarian dip. It works like it sounds. That Smashmouth ability is the superior choice. "I get knocked down, but I get up again!" With the stats that can be switch place, I'm running a half-orc fighter lvl 4, dex base, running with piercer and duelist fighting style I got 18 dex, the dagger go for a 1d4+6 damage ( 4d4+6 on crit), the rapier is savage with a beautiful 4d8+6 on a crit! So far, it litterally kill

I personally love Orc Barbarians. The aggressive ability to help mitigate attacks made at you helps greatly boost Barbs. If you reckless, every attack towards you has advantage. So... take the mobile feat or a reach weapon and use that 30-40 movement speed twice a turn. At lvl5, barbs gain another 10 movement speed, too. 15ft from Totem Barb at lvl3, although you'll probably want resistance to all damage except psychic lolol. Plus, grappling then pushing larger things is easier as an Orc. If your enemy has numerous attacks, relentless is so worthless Orcs > Half-Orcs all around

@@xaviervega468 Except landing crits isn't viable. Plus, in hard battles, you can just take Great Weapon Master and deal more damage. You won't crit on all attacks, but you can easily hit with a -5 penalty. If you crit or reduce to 0, you can bonus action attack. That's 3 weapon attacks and their damage plus 30 more damage, plus rage. Movement when needed means you won't die. Half-Orc relentless is bad against lots of enemies or enemies with numerous attacks, or against Insta kill. It's a bad ability honestly.

(Matter of fact, EVERY Barbarian using 2-handers should)Great Weapon Master + Savage attacks + Brutal Critical is a TON of damage. Even better if you're a Berserker.(my preferred Barbarian)

@@ashenwuss1651 What do mean D8's If you use a great axe it gives you an extra D12 So if you have one level of brutal critical and savage attacks that's an extra 2d12 damage right there without figuring in bonuses. Oh and I get to hit you again with Great Weapon Master. If I took the -5 ability I get +`10 dmg along with the 2 extra D12's (with a greataxe of course) Brutal Crit and Savage Attacks are awesome. The half-orc is quite simply the better damage dealer.

In my groups curse of strahd campaign I'm actually a full orc druid circle of the Shepard and in that campaign I themed him and play him like a hunter (we roll for our stats btw) the primary can trip I use is primal savagery and my favorite lvl 4 spell is guardian of nature. SPOILER FOR ANY DOING OR ABOUT TO TO THE CURSE OF STRAHD CAMPAIGN In it my party took on a werewolf den and I challenged the pack leader to a right to alpha won the 1v1 combat and no I'm a werewolf and have the stars to my own grove/pack

Yeah flavor is the only reason to choose Orc. You pretty much HAVE to disregard the mechanics but there is a good chance you won't be at a table with a half orc if you choose Orc.

I think it's due to the - 2 int. I don't play D&D but I am getting interested though. It would make more sense to buff the orcs by substituting the negative with a +2 Con or charisma score or better yet get rid of the negative.

Half Orc Barbarian, Eagle/Hawk totem. Get angry enough to fly. Half Orc Ranger, Monster slayer. Favored Enemy perks and jinxing a spell-caster on a WIS save. I prefer Light-Medium armor classes, Orcish culture puts respect on battle scars.

With the aggressive feat and 6 int, I feel like there is an argument to be made about tying a stick to the Orc's head with a picture of an enemy(Let's say a Kobold) danging off of it and letting the orc use his aggressive movement every turn in a race.

Half Orc Battle Master Fighter 5/Rogue assassin 3/Ranger Hunter Horde breaker 3/Tempest Cleric 1. At level 12, his stats are 16 str/12 Dex/16 Con/10 Int/13 Wis/8 Cha. 9 HP per level, but with tough feat he gains 11 HP per level with so far a total of 145 HP, starting with 13 HP at level 1.

Wouldn't be surprised if in a 5.5e or 6e they have orcs be whatever alignment their deity is. Lawful Evil, Chaotic Evil, and Nuetral Evil. Don't forget Lawful Nuetral and Chaotic Nuetral for Orc antiheroes.

It's just so difficult to look past Barbarian. It's a cliche for a reason. I think if I was going to play a (Half) Orc as anything else, I'd want to go _completely_ against type and pick Warlock or Sorcerer.
