In my first ever game there was a homebrewed joke item called “The Mask of Old” that polymorphed the wearer into an old commoner. The loophole is that the race wasn’t specified which ended up becoming an old commoner if any race. We were in a room with locked doors and paintings on the wall were flooding the room with seemingly endless water. Our bard donned the mask of old and polymorphed into an old triton and used the innate spellcasting to cast gust of wind against I create a sort of wind tunnel to give us an air pocket to buy us time to figure out what to do.

The animated gauntlets reminds me of a d&d story I heard from a friend in collage a decade ago. Guy was playing a war-forged something or other. war-forged, once a high enough level, are capable of touching wraiths with no negative consequences. He grappled one. unsure what to do with it, he put it in his bag of holding. Though it was funny so he started collecting wraiths through the campaign and shoving them in his bag. Wraiths don't require air, so all he had to do was occasionally feed them a unfortunate bandit to keep them "alive". Skip a head to the final session. He enters the BBEG thrown room through impressive and very heavy doors. While BBEG is monologuing he surveys the room. Notes the lack of other entrances. Doesn't say anything, just throws his bag of wraith and walks out. Uses his war forged 30+ strength to hold the door closed until the screaming stops. Best part is, he goes back in after everyone is dead and just starts shoving all the wraiths back in his bag. So yeah, that's how the wraith grenade was created and promptly banned

this reminds me of a trick I like to do in the videogame Hexen. there are three playable classes, Warrior, Cleric, and Wizard. the Cleric's most powerful weapon is "Wraithverge", which summons a bunch of wraiths. halfway though the final level you encounter an EVIL Cleric, who fires a Wraithverge at YOU. here's my trick: send his wraiths back at him with a "Disk of Repulsion" usable item! that also works with the "homing fireballs" the evil Wizard fires at you! its less effective with the evil Warrior's attack, because it's not a "homing" attack, so the reflected attacks will mostly miss.

3:23 Easy modification to the spell: The creatures must be summoned on the ground, not in the air. 7:11 Very clever, but this wouldn't work. Chain Mail gives disadvantage to Stealth because it makes a lot of noise while moving around in it. It's noisy, not shiny. As a DM, I would give Inspiration for this at least. The Cloak of Many Fashions could be used to make a ghillie cloak, I'd allow that to be used to make a Stealth check while lightly obscured. 10:59 This is a very interesting magic item. I would add a Wisdom saving throw for an unwilling creature to be able to resist the effect of the coin. Also, it does not work on creatures with an Intelligence of 3 or below and the target must be able to understand you. Here's an idea for a gag, but useful, magical item: The Bag of Beholding - When you put the bag over your head and speak the command word, you cast Clairvoyance without needing concentration. May be used once per dawn.

I use magic tinkering to give all magic users a unique smell. This was so when we faced a beholder. If your smell stopped you were in the anti-magic cone. He kept his eye on me after using pyrotechnics to create smoke for a safe haven from the eye stocks.

that part about the Beholder somehow reminded me of a funny gag in a webcomic called "YAFGC": the LIch, Lewstrum, had managed to summon an ancient goddess of death, "Killa". she was creating an army of undead out of anyone who died nearby. Meanwhile, a Beholder had gotten angry at a bunch of Orcs. Lewstrum and Killa were watching with a magical mirror, and Lewstrum say, "watch, every orc he kills will become one of my unstoppable undead." The beholder then disintegrates half the orcs and petrified the other half! Lewstrum's jaw hit the floor...LITERALLY!

The only time I or any of the crew left the DM speechless, the time I used a scape route as the ultimate weapon against a Tarraske when the DM attempted TPK. I already mentioned It on this channel's videos comments, but basically. We went to a colliseum in another dimension after being sent there by accident. The final Battle was a Tarraske. That not even the guards could hold once released. We were level 4. So I decided to take the lead for once as I'm more of a plan followers than a maker when I'm with the crew. So I ran with the crew following me to the prize room. There was a portal staff, one time use, It would return us to our world. No restrictions, nor level requirement. So I opened the portal. Just as did the Tarraske was trying to access the portal, so instead of just closing It, I waites for the Tarraske to be halfway through, and closed the portal on them. Nat 20. Level 4 Wizard oke shotted a Tarraske with the scape route item. Dm though we would just run and not be able to kill it and since the XP reward was so Great he only allowed us to level up once.

Used to be with a party in middle school, we had an intelligence 1 wizard with the name Book, he had a magic item that he made that was and I kid you not a tome tied to a stick, anytime the time was hit on against a surface it casted any random spell from all of 5e and it created interesting moments one that I find memorable is when he turned our rogue into a human vegetable during a meeting with this rich guy at his manor, good times.

Gigantic shield: So we were going about our dungeon (in our first campaign BTW) and found a Gigantic shield. 50 feet by 50 feet but you can hold it in your hand. It will fit the space of whatever you put it in. BUT if you open your hand with it in your hand you will just get smooshed onto the ground (no damage) with the shield on top of you. So we kinda used it to cheese the dungeon boss by making him hold it so if he opened his hand to cast a spell he just get's stuck in the floor. Bonus orb of expelling + butter's bam jam: it is just a Fortnite shockwave orb the bam jam is jam but it is like gunpowder, if you apply enough pressure it explodes. So we are in the middle of this giant orc siege and we see they are using a siege tower to attack so we clear the enemies in front of us as our barbarians go CHARGING AT THE siege tower which they take. We at this point have brought the fight to us so there are tons of orcs attacking us, so we take the orb of expelling put it in a can of bam jam and launch it on a ballista bolt using rope I fire bolt the rope and we drop AN ATOM BOMB on like 5,000 orcs.

Our party had two unconscious members and were escaping down a snowy mountainside in an out of control sled. The enemies that had made these two members unconscious were chasing us in another sled. As we passed through a narrow defile, our ranger on the back placed his immovable rod a foot above the sled and activated it. All we heard behind us was a number grunts and cries, and as we came out of the defile, we were being chased by an empty sled.

I was playing a half orc totem barbarian and I found a pair of goggles of night. This bumped my darkvision from a range of 60ft to 120ft. At level 6, I chose the eagle totem which makes it so that you can see out to a mile as if it were no more than 100ft away from you. My DM agreed that based on the wording of the ability, this basically meant my character had darkvision out to a 1 mile radius because everything out to 1 mile appeared to be within my character’s 120ft range of darkvision.

My current DM has a gambling system for magical items. 20 Gold for one box that contains a random item, or a dud that has nothing in it. I got a Scroll of Fireball and used it against a Shadow while taking night watch during camp, nearly caused a TPK because of that

Creative use of some homebrewed potions. It was the final fight against the BBEG and his army of minions. The dwarf barbarian had just consumed my Bottle of Growing, which doubled his height (to nearly 7 feet). All the other party members benefitted from his AC class of 18 by simply standing behind him and his mighty shield while they were able to launch ranged attacks at the enemies. **Bonus was how they defeated the big monster, a gigantic sea slug that was basically an enormous damage sponge. They stuck a shield inside its mouth to keep the jaws open, then used barrels of salt that they found at the nearby tavern as basically slug-killing grenades, tossing them into the slug's open mouth for hundreds of points of damage each hit. My original plan was for the monster slug to be an essentially endless damage sponge, because the BBEG wasn't really all that powerful. He was quickly taken out once his big bad monster was defeated.

I had a player that was constantly trying to pull off absurd ideas. Making a squirt gun to shoot health potions into allies mouths from a distance, that kind of thing. He would tell me about them out of game and I’d explain why it wouldn’t work the way he thought it would. After the party ended up with some sovereign glue and an immovable rod, the player contacted me and asked if magic items are unbreakable, which I confirmed suspiciously. He then said he wanted to try attaching the immovable rod to his +1 shield with the sovereign glue to make an invincible immovable shield that he could use to block doors, stand on in mid air, etc. I, as usual, started to explain why it wouldn’t work, but quickly realized, to my horror, that it was completely sound and actually kind of ingenious.

Way back in 2e I played a civilization hating druid, who had a plan. I collected cursed items. Every cursed item the team found I would take. Every cursed item discovered for sale I would buy. Every last one. When I would hit what I thought to be critical mass I would 'gift' these items throughout what ever city I wanted to fall next... and then just walk away to start collecting again.

Infinite gold glitch… To keep it brief I gave my party a magic coin that as I stated “multiplies into as many coins as damage dealt in one instance of damage.” It was just meant to be a fun side thing. To see what creative way they’d deal a bunch of damage to it and get some spare gold. Problem is I didn’t define this better so when the bard/rogue threw it into an eternal flame meant to just be flavor for a royal tomb, he argued the “instance of damage” would be when the coin is no longer in a flame I stated “was so hot it could melt metal”. He circumvented a boss fight by flooding the tomb with a river of gold as the party escaped Neverember and his guards.

I had a homebrewed plot mcguffin for a level 12 Elder Scrolls oneshot, 2024 classes with a Daedric Titan (necrotic-themed reskin of an Ancient Red Dragon stat block that I made weak to Radiant) as the boss. That item could be used to upcast any spell to 9th level. Did you know that Divine Smite 2024 is a leveled spell that can be upcast? I sure didn't! Anyway that Titan got evicerated by the paladin three rounds in.

I just want to say that a whole bunch of mages with mold earth and druids with rainstorm is the ultimate siege weapon. Have them sneak out at night during the siege and dig a 40-ft deep, 200-ft wide moat, and then have the druids fill it. No spell that creates food and drink can account for the starvation the keep will deal with. No, not even Hero's Feast or Goodberry.

In our first campaign the DM put us up vs the 3rd from bottom enemy captain, a noble on hard times, can barely afford to keep his mansion and it was falling apart. Turns out hes a fallen former paladin that never finished basic training as part of the squad our paladin was from. This guy HATED Sven our paladin. I had gotten a hat of disguise (my Tiefling knows not everyone trsuts her so she was prepared to disguise herself as a human or an elf or something. She used that hat to become a spitting image of Sven. She lets the bad guy see her and he yells a challenge then gets confused as Sven stands next to my character. The illusion was shattered the moment I fired off a couple of eldritch blasts in one turn, but it had confused and distracted the bad guy (which our dm used narritvely as the dice gods abandoned her and this guy 2 levels higher than the party messed up damn near every action her took and got slaughtered.
