In my brother's campaign, orcs are not traditionally named at birth because they have yet to prove themselves as "true orcs". Instead, the orcish baby is named after the first thing that they try to eat; they earn their actual name after a rite of adulthood. My Leg (named by his father) did not pass his trial, and was thus cast out of his tribe.

Elves and Dwarves in my campaigns have to act like mortal enemies in front of humans specifically, because two ancient Kings decided to declare a false war in order to extort resources from two human kingdoms on their borders. Both sides are made explicitly aware that this war has never existed, and are raised to pretend that said war is still ongoing between their races, and that there's serious animosity between the two. Once the humans are gone, they can go back to their lives and drinking under the same bar again. At this point, they have full-on backstories and everything going on, with family lines dying at the hands of the "Elven/Dwarven scum", battles for cities that have never existed, and so, so much more. Essentially, Two ancient Kings of Dwarves and Elves decided to extort war bonds out of their human neighbors, and now they do it to gaslight the humans for shits and giggles, who still largely believe that the war is still ongoing.

In many of the settings my DM makes the Dwarves see bowing as a sign of respect from other taller races, as they are lowering themselves to the 'proper' height, at least in their eyes. Therefore, to do so is seen as good manners, and to refuse to do so, can lead to hostility. The Elves on the other hand see bowing as the ultimate acknowledgement of superior rank or deep respect, and will refuse to do if they do not feel like it. This, as you might guess, has led to a LOT of misunderstandings and quarrels and minor grudges, and usually needs much in the way of manoeuvring and sweettalking when it comes to international summits or councils. One of the work arounds is the taking of a knee, or a sort of squat, which appeases all parties.

In my world, The Cairn, the dark elves of Dokovoch (Shadowland) regularly practice necromancy. Their society has very limited resources so when someone dies they still mourn but also see that it’s another pair of hands to work and one less mouth to feed. This does not mean, however, that they are disrespected. Even though they cant respond or understand, the elves are very polite to the dead and when their usefulness has run out, ie. they decayed to the point of no longer working, they are burned so they can fulfill one final purpose, fuel for the fire.

Your standard Taboos are common in my world, however there is a bit of a grey area with Necromancy. As resurrection spells are considered Necromancy if the deceased has died by natural causes. (sickness, dying in ones sleep, etc.) But if the person has died, say in combat, then it would be acceptable. It stems from the idea that to revive someone outside of a terrible accident or by the negligence/ wrath of another is to deny them reunion with the Omnipotent (my World's Main God.) In contrast, Necromancy as a form of severe punishment is acceptable. For example, say a mass murderer is serving multiple life sentences for their crimes. Once they die in prison, the priests will resurrect them into undeath to finish their sentence as undead slave labor. They are denied their reunion with the Omnipotent, until they have paid for their sins in full.

i have a homebrew species where it's taboo to expose one's ears. they always have long hair, wear hoods, ear-covering hats, or special headskirts that resemble those worn by Ferengi in order to keep then covered. In-universe, this originated from the species living in a sandy desert region and having very small ears and large fingers, so any sand that got into the ears was very difficult to get out, and could cause hearing loss or infection. out-of universe, it's because for a long time, i didn't know what their ears actually looked like. so i just kept them covered to avoid needing to describe them. Conversely, Cannibalism is perfectly okay in their culture, and is part of multiple different rituals and ceremonies. This species has the ability to re-grow missing limbs, so during weddings, each spouse will chop off one finger and feed it to the other. This ensures that no matter what, you will always be a part of one another as your flesh becomes theirs and vise-versa. Similarly, funerals often involve consuming the raw flesh of the dead. This ensures that the dead never truly die, as their flesh becomes a part of you, meaning that so long as you live, they will live on with you. That said, they do still like having bodies to bury. So most times they only eat the legs of the dead, as when you die, you become a ghost. and ghosts can fly. ergo, the dead don't need legs.

In the tribe of a fictional species of advanced ice-age humans, it is a tremendous taboo to say “may you become nothing!” to anyone or anything. Rival human species, predatory megafauna, divine beasts that they are at the mercy of, one should never say it to even these things as the tribe believes all of existence is made from the flesh of their god, and even if dead and decayed to scattered dust one’s existence still continues as a part of the world. To cease to exist is considered the worst fate ever and nothing deserves such a terrifying end. Ironically though, this divine decree secretly stems from the god being obsessed with having total control of the worlds made from his essence and energies and abhorring any foreign material or energy that ‘corrupts’ his creations by intermixing with them and thus (gradually) breaking them free from his absolute control of them. To become a ‘void’ in the world by his perspective is to be something he cannot command or even sense as it is no longer made of matter/energy that is an extension of him.

From an old 4e D&D game: "You do not horde Lunar Regolith." The moment you get any, you either go looking for an agent of Creon to sell it to, or you resign yourself to one of Creon's hunters coming to 'buy' it from you. Now, some of them are reasonable people, but not all of them are. This ties into the big one from that setting: _You do not use Lunar Regolith as a spell component_ . That taboo's origin is long forgotten even to the Elves, remembered only as something that brings 'horrible misfortune' without details. Coincidentally, Lunar Regolith can stand in for any spell component, of nearly any value, for a pinch of the white/silver dust. The origin of that taboo is tied into the setting lore, but amounts to 'back in pre current historical records, using Lunar Regolith got the Lunar Dragons to come down on you immediately' Said 'dragons' are closer to unnatural disasters than monsters and only called 'dragon' because it was the single most horrifying monster anyone could think of at the time. The Tarrasque didn't exist on the planet back then, or they would have been called 'Lunar Tarrasques' instead. Another campaign world I put together for 'Dungeons the Dragoning' 7e had the fun taboo "Never seek to know the past of anything made of feathers." This one is a fun case of long running misunderstanding. There's a unique item, 'Philomena's Coat' which looks akin to a trench coat made of phoenix feathers (lined in down of course) and has little in the way of magical properties. That coat also predates the eldest civilizations still operating in the setting and is the personal coat of a terrifyingly powerful reincarnating being thematically tied to the Phoenix. Because the coat has little magical properties, it's easily imitated and only a divination spell like Legend Lore can tell a fake from the real thing. You can tell because everyone who learns the Legend Lore from the real thing goes mad and either self destructs or lashes out at everyone around them, scared that they are the latest incarnation of Philomena. (Philomena did some rather important but very frightening things.) Thus anything made of feathers being considered dangerous to divine/scry about the past of, because it's been bouncing around civilization for a really long time. Naturally, one of the players character not only found the actual Coat, but was the latest incarnation after the memory preservation part broke. I had some real fun with that bit of lore dump, and the reason why a skilled diviner was willing to Legend Lore the coat for their PC. (They were reasonably sure this was the current Philomena, and literally bet their sanity on it.) Edit: From an old 3.5 D&D game: In Drow society, discriminating based on gender is taboo because Loth banned 'anything that limits the potential to serve me'. This leads to a lot of 'niceties' to allow for such basics as gender segregated bathrooms. It also results in the biggest ongoing split in Drow society: What about Species? A solid chunk of city states believe that as Loth never specifically mentioned that (unlike with gender where it's known doctrine) this is fine. But a solid chunk of city states take a legalistic interpretation of Loth's ban on limits to her servants capacity to serve her, which would mean that a loyal servant of Loth being treated as lesser than a Drow because they're another species is limiting their potential. For the ruthlessly prosperity focused Drow of the setting, not being able to contribute your maximum to Loth's Tithe is utterly disgusting to even contemplate. That stems from their history, where it turns out convincing Loth to not treat all men badly didn't have only good results. (Loth is actually Lawful Evil in that setting, but used to be her usual flavor of backstab happy chaotic evil before an Epic Bard convinced her otherwise.

Goblins of another region fight for territory on sight. Should you fail in defeating them in a set of challenge you must put up with them in the territory until the moon changes. The reason is because goblins actually are spawned from a ritual via a goblin leader. The goblins can be seen as different because of the rituals. Mana generates blue, blood generates red, mushroom cultivation generates green. goblins that don't adhere to this rule are to be raided by all nearby goblins once evidence is shown via combat signs and tents not set up and living in. Then the new goblins will repay the offended goblins with participating in a ritual to make enough to take the new territory within the current phase of moon or next phase.

In my personal setting of Halerboria using magic to predict the future is extremely taboo and often outright forbidden in places of high importance such as mages guilds or the homes of royalty. Mostly because of how that kind of magic has an effect on fate: The more clear what you're checking in the future is, the closer and closer it gets to being "fixed" in fate. To see the death of someone perfectly is to accidentally condemn them to death. Like opening Schrodinger's Box, once it's opened you can't put it back again. So the people who want to use those magics do so in the most vague means possible. Such as card readings or bone dice. There was/is even a god in the setting that was the god of fortune telling, but his vision could outright see the future. It marked him as the most dangerous god, and Balctus the god king had him bound, blindfolded, and thrown into a magical prison. All the while Balctus instructed his most loyal followers and allied gods to strike the god's name from history. Leaving the god in a state of complete obscurity, and being replaced by Balctus with the moniker "The Man with The Sword", to completely remove mortal's abilities to discuss him.

While many consider it as just superstition, it is taken seriously enough that if twins are born to dwarven nobility, they'll typically be hidden away from the public, either by sending one or both of the children away, having the children pose as a single person when in public, or in extreme cases, even killing one or both children. There is in fact a city that is ruled by a pair of twins posing as a single person, and coincidentally it's one of the more prosperous cities in that region.

Stuff like slavery and drug trading are a couple easy ones. They still exist in more uncivilized areas of the world, but in most of the world, especially in major cities, they’re both illegal specifically because of the existence of a hybrid human rights organization/adventurers guild that has significant international sway, and enforces the protection of citizens in ways governments don’t/can’t, at the cost of not being able to interfere in any governmental affairs. The guild is able to keep organized crime groups (mob, mafia, yakuza, triads, etc) in check, since they know that the guild would shut down their whole operation otherwise, and in turn, the organized crime groups keep smaller gangs and such in line as well, so even though this is more legality than taboo, it’s taboo for even those whose business is breaking the law

This was because the "high and noble elves, greatest of all people," or just high elves to everyone else (gnomes have a much more... colorful name for them), considered themselves so far above other races to the literal point of racism. Wood elves were those that deemed non-elves equal to themselves, and thus were ostracized, and half-elves were considered worse than trash to high elves. And when the high elves were forced by treaty to treat non-elves as equals? Well, they literally moved their entire forest to a location where the non-elves wouldn't bother them. I once homebrewed a deity system that revolved around 4 gods representing the 4 seasons. In that world there was a magical flower that was owned by srig, the child goddess of spring (yeah, I'm bad with comming up with names) There was an entire backstory aobut that flower also being able to revive the dead and prig originally creating the flower with 4 blossoms so she could give away the other 3 to the other gods, but then she decided to revive the first human on earth after he died in the winter cold using the blossom she was going to give to firrun , the god of winter and death. Also it is believed that winter only ends because sprig shared her flower with firrun to calm him down and end the cold as the flower can't grow in the cold due to never having been gifted to him. Our whole campaign was about first defeating a lich who hoarded those flowers for immortality causing the winter to never end, then returning those flowers to the world to rebalance the flow of seasons, then to finally gift one last flower to firrun so he could finally join the other gods as an equal and wouldn't be angry at them and the humans anymore and last about convincing soria - the goddess of summer and passion - both in war and in love and arturus, the god of autumn, art and creativity to accept their brother as one of the 4 gods instead as they were still not trusting him and tried to keep the world from ever having winter basically causing a global warming. So basically in my world because a lich broke the taboo of picking those flowers, the heroes first had to avoid an ice age and then stop global warming.

Not really a taboo. Kind of the opposite. But, necromancy is basically the mark of a powerful family. Especially if they manage to imbue the souls of their loved ones back into their bodies. Basically, the world was stricken with calamity, and the only way they were able to come back as a society was to rely on the labor of lesser undead, due in large part to some lingering effects of the cataclysm created by a war of the gods. We're talking 100s of thousands of casualties, spanning multiple continents, with only a few isolated nations surviving unscathed, amd dozens of budding nations wiped out entirely. The noble houses, in a mad dash to reassert themselves and avoid losing face, needed to rebuild quickly. Myrkul, being one of the gods on the winning side of the war, capitalized on this vulnerability to enhance his influence. He offered them knowledge of necromancy, in exchange for his worship to be spread among the noble houses. One of the best lines was "reclaim your loved ones. I've gotten from them what I need already. They have died and paid penance for their lack of faith, realizing that I am the ultimate end that awaits them. I care not what happens to what's left of them. So take their bodies, and live with them among you. Let them care and provide for you as they always have. You need never be apart again."

The campaign took place 100 years after this. "Dead towns" have sprung up, wherein cults have decided to kill themselves, driven mad by living surrounded by undead, and wanting to fit in. So they killed themselves atop rituals to reanimate themselves, leaving every inhabitant of the town as an undead. It was metal as fuck, with everything from noble families practicing incest to preserve their lineage, to vampirism as an STD, to making wine out of blood and corpses.

There are a few factions that have been trying to wrestle control of the land, and they have pretty serious laws in the areas they hold influence. Mystrixia, the City of Magic, is ruled by a majority Elf population, and therefore they remember the most of how Kalvexia, the country they live, was before. However, they purposefully suppress and hide any information of Kalvexia's past and punish those who study it, so they won't learn the truths behind who once ruled over the land. They have also outlawed the practice and use of various spells and magical talents after an incident at the School of Necromancy (which they also suppress any information on). In regions they control, it is illegal to practice magic without a license issued by them, and they hold much influence due to the presence of their wizard towers across the land. Illuvialla, on the other hand, is a heavily religious city that was created shortly after the Orc Wars brought devastation to the Halfling, Gnome, and Dwarf races of the mountains. They are run by the Allfather and his acolytes, who allege they can hear the voices of the Gods themselves. They have created a list of deities and entities that are legal to worship, as well as those that you can be prosecuted for worshipping. As they are a new faction they don't hold as much power yet as Mystrixia, but unlike Mystrixia, they are far more aggressive and blatant in their attempts to wrestle power and influence across the land.

Practicing magic without sanction. With magic so closely linked to the two warring godly entities, the Light and the Darkness, any caster not part of those organizations is considered a criminal to either be integrated or prosecuted. A rare few live on the run or are loosely affiliated with either side but most are quickly forced into picking a side.

In my world magic is more like chemistry where it’s all around you in different forms but to manufacture it you have to use very specific combinations. What helps with these combinations are these little gems that are made by the children of the creator god (the pixies) and everyone has one. It’s very taboo for someone to not have one of these crystals and is considered a bad omen

In my world of instrument people, the Woodwinders are hunter gatherers that live off the land. Even poultry is fair game, but killing a songbird is extremely taboo. This is because they believe their ancestors reincarnate as songbirds to keep watching over them and teach them songs of old. Any other Orchestrian doing it is seen with disdain, but if a Woodwinder does it, they may be banished. Among the Stringkin, it is considered an insult to play someone else's strings without consent. It's usually something you'd save for your partner or a close friend to tease them, so someone else doing it to you might be taunting you. Not taboo or anything but Percusonians often greet each other with a good old smack on the drum/bell/cymbal. Taking it with a good ring is a sign of vigor and good health. They just forget that other Orchestrians don't do that.

In the Epic of Vale ( my homebrew campaign setting) It really depends on the area of the map you happen to be or age. ( I have 3 ages going from low magic to high magic to high technology) But all across the land and in every age it is illegal to launch a cow in to the air. This is due to a massive fued between Orc tribes and Goblin tribes where they compete who can launch either the furthest(goblins) or the most (orcs) This has made a massive nomansland in the setting where only gnomes and dwarves can tunnel through as above ground a random cow might splat on to you. However the Gnomes and Dwarves monoplise these tunnels with toll roads etc and have minor skirmishes when ever their constant tunneling intersect. Due to this. Its illegal to go through a gnome tunnel as a dwarf or go through a dwarven tunnel as a gnome. Elves in general are disliked due to their relative safe hamlets and kingdoms and their general disposition towards other races seeing them as violent brutes. The halflings and Humans are in the middle of all of this and will simply bribe/barter with any of them. Necromancy most of the time is illegal but when there is a temple of Grave Clerics, Necromancers might be around to help bring peace to the dead and their loved ones. Mages and engineers can be prosecuted as not every town understands what is going on when confronted with them. Its a fun place to go with wonderfull colorfull individuals, but it pays to keep your map and migration card on you at all times once you've gotten off your boat. (yes you will need migration cards or visa's to go from one territory to another as it will provide you with some safety when stumbling upon some towns)

There's a country in my world where it's considered taboo to eat in the presence of other people. Consuming food is a very intimate process and must be treated as such. Eating in front of another person insinuates that person is an intimate partner or a member of your family. There are also a lot of ceremonies that must be observed while eating and it's a relatively slow process. Food was sparse and there was a rash of poisonings in the upper nobility and the ceremonies became a method of detecting poison, foods that are poisonous (so not food, or things that look like something else that is poisonous which is common in wild plants and mushrooms), and preventing severe allergic reactions.

Not answering the call to adventure. A some background, i use the Eberron setting, which has the Dragon Marks, special magical tattoos that are passed down via bloodline and grant special powers and inclinations to specific trade skills such as crafting, security, messages, farming, etc, the only way to get one is to be a part of a specific race and have a connection to certain familys, with 2 exceptions, the Aberrant Mark which is generally unpredictable both in who will get one and what it can do and is often also a taboo thing to have, but the other is the Mark of Adventure. I treat Adventurers as 1/2 Career, 1/2 Magical condition, with the Mark of Adventure being its physical manifestation, it makes player use the normal rule set while most NPCs use the gritty realism rules set, as it only appears on people who have a role to play in the fate of the world, ignoring it effectively dooms the world to a slightly worse fate than if it was answered, its not disasterous, but the outcome wont be the best it could be. Most people are only subconsciously aware of this, but its enough that ignoring it one of the most disgraceful things to do, though this doesnt apply to those who fall or give up only those who dont even try, even some BBEGs are more respected

In my homebrew world, the people of the Zygathian Empire spit upon the one known as the Dread Destroyer, who was an Emperor who inherited the throne and tried the whole, "I'm an Evil Emperor and I'm going to treat my people like ass and attempt to take over the world," schtick. The Emperor was slain not by adventurers who had stormed the capital during the Zygathian Civil War, but by a soldier who had held the previous flag of the empire in defiance to the tyrant and died a standing death in the throne room. When asked why, it's to reflect the disrespect that the Dread Destroyer accumulated on the Zygathian Empire during his reign back onto him as he was a generally not-nice person and wanted to end the world in fire -and caused the split of essentially the good kingdom in twain. It's looked upon with suspicion to not do this as it would be giving someone respect who lost it when he ascended to the throne, and gets all kinds of looks from the local natives in both the modern Empire and the new republic formed from the Civil War.

While there is very little that is universally considered Taboo in my world I have a few cultural ones and some superstitions. In the many Dwarven cultures across the planet it is considered taboo to not bring a gift when meeting a person of import. The quality of the gift can change wildly from Dwarf to Dwarf. Sometimes being as little as a few coins to things as extravagant as artisanal goods and masterwork weapons. Sailors and sea elves have a Taboo about hunting sea dragons. Sea Dragons are considered Lawful Good and their society is very close to a chivalrous knightdom. They are very dutiful, vengeful and they are complete battle junkies. Killing a sea dragon with out permission is seen as a heinous crime. Every time some one catches the ire of the Queen of the Sea Dragons the maps need to be redrawn. I have two different broad classifications of goblinoid. House Goblins, are goblins, hobs and bugbears who have successfully integrated with civilized culture and created The Great Houses. Tribal Goblins are the ones that told the civilized world to go stuff itself. It is a grave insult to confuse the two groups.

In my world there are several taboos regarding the twin gods of magic. A bit of backstory here, the two were once mortal mages with a sibling rivalry so intense that it culminated in one of them ascending to godhood which began a cycle of the twins usurping each other so consistently that it's used to nark the passage of time. Both of the twins are to be referred to as the gods of magic, regardless of which one actually holds the position at the moment. If you acknowledge the fact that one of them isn't a god in a way that is considered disrespectful, then the one who is a god will *immediately* curse you for insulting their sibling, ranging to constant toe stubbing to an inability to use magic or outright killing you depending on the severity of the perceived insult. The twins are rather forgiving in this regard however, so being accidentally cursed is rather rare. Intentionally depicting the rivalry of the twins as being antagonistic, aggressive, hateful, or the like will result in you being cursed by the twins and physically marked as a liar by one of their mortal servants. If you genuinely don't know any better though, they'll simply send one of their priests to educate you and all will be forgiven. It's generally considered taboo to worship only one of them and not the other. There's no real punishment for it, but you will be shunned if you do.

I have a taboo in one of my older worlds' nations that the players of it never bothered to learn and ended up excommunicated and eventually declared heretics for. "Never kill on a Sunday." The nation of Yonotia was based upon Christianity with their belief being focused on a singular deity called Celderum, pronounced with a K instead of a C. This deity is seen as the only god by the Yonotians. Celdedrum was a god who had been a mortal charlatan who rose to divinity through trickery, illusions, and manipulations. Thus his divine domains were Lies, Illusions, and Trickery. And according to the old teaching Celdedrum spoke of as a mortal he created the world in Seven Days. On which the Seventh Day was the day he rested and thus all those who died on a Sunday outside of sanctioned ground would never enter the afterlife as he was not there to guide them. The teachings of Celdebrum were so revered and followed that even assassins, serial killers, bandits, and intelligent monsters refused to do any manner of volatile killing on Sundays because of the mad frenzy of the followers. Breaking any of Celebrum's teachings was akin to killing a holy cow in India or pissing on the footsteps of Jesus. So the party entered the world, and they wandered around. They were told by the caravan master they traveled with that there were many strange traditions and sacred practices of the Yotonians they needed to respect and never break. But the players did not bother to take notes or even listen to it all and thus went mostly ignorant into the nation of pseudo-Christian zealots. A week into their visit to the nation they got excommunicated from a city for killing goblins and orcs on a Sunday. They thought the church was corrupted and being controlled by orc and goblin infiltrators or something like that. And a week later at a different city, the situation repeated itself. And again they thought that no murder on a Sunday was just a placebo made up by the infiltrators to create opportunities for monsters and banditry. The third incident had them declared heretics by the pope as they killed a known serial killer in an alleyway. Only after they were chased and hounded for days by an angry mob of zealot civilians, paladins, and priests from the capital to the border did they start to understand that NO KILLING ON A SUNDAY was in fact a real rule. Only took them seeing the mob suddenly set up camp and stop chasing them on a Sunday to get the point across.

In my world exist the holy country of Sentriss, where any arcane magic is punishable by harsh punishments, often death. For the arcane is of the Goddess of Chaos and her evil Gods, and any who wield the arcane have touched Chaos and are therefore impure and might spread this to others who they come into contact with. Sorcerers especially are seen as abominations as their very essence is that of the arcane, and therefore corrupt to the core. If any Sorcerer is found in Sentriss they will be purified quickly and violently and then burned. If you are lucky the first violent purification will kill you. And while the country of Sentriss is correct in the fact that the arcane comes from Chaos, the Gods of order have taken the different schools of the arcane into their divine portfolios. Though that too is punishable to talk about in Sentriss.

Here’s an odd one, due to it being a sci-fi setting still in development as I go. Developing new computerized technologies. The whole “Deco Coast” where the campaign is meant to take place is Decopunk. After so many foul run-ins with computer programs causing mass panic, causing economic deficits, and attempting to overrun the job market, people as a whole just started despising computer equipment that didn’t “keep to itself.” Sentient mechs, tiny assistants made to look like little pterodactyls, and the likes are fine! But even if there isn’t anything “illegal” about developing an AI-based image generator, don’t expect the police to actually have a motivation to help you when your cyber ware filled car gets stripped down to the frame.

Oh thanks for the vid I never thought of stuff like this for my games. One world, destroying a book or other document strictly for information purposes brings the irl of a god of knowledge. In another, people control their breathing very carefully and its a cultural norm to never let someone see any signs of breathing other than calm low breathing, because monsters roam the city and if they catch you awake they will kill and eat you. In another setting, any type of desecration of the dead is not just a taboo, but also a serious crime as they tend to bring back the dead to continue serving in their profession as undead. To many worlds and cultures to go over it all though sorry. One of my favorites is a city of shapeshifts who have tech to tell if anyone is recording. They hold their ceremonial fights in sink with known satilites passing by. Anyone caught as something other than human gets consequently slaughtered as a monster to keep up the facade to the rest of the world. Even though just about everyone in the world is aware of monsters, everyone acts like everyone is human because otherwise, otherworldly being start hunting down those who know.

So... I was playing as a Merfolk and I had it written into my character's back story that his family and people basically lived in an under water city and were extreamly fearful of anyone who lived on the surface. My character was abused and actually committed a tabo among his people by fleeing his abusive family to live on the surface. It never really came up much to my disapointment. Like I was dropping hints across 5 sessions that my character HATED being in the ocean. Even though he's a Merfolk who thrives in the water he was always reluctant to go swimming unless basically forced to do so because of where the story was going. And no one ever bothered to question why this fish man was afraid of water. Honestly the reason is because his family will never leave the ocean to look for him but as long as he's in the ocean where they can travel he risks being forced to return to an abusive home.

For my campaign, Strings of Fate; what is taboo in Sentia is slavery though there are some that bend the law and have "indentured servants" be in their "pay". I ... am not gonna talk about what that payment is. Other taboos are of course what we would consider taboo though there are many that see the relationship between a humanoid and a beast-folk (Disney like anthro characters to anime cat-girls or other "monster-musume" races) is taboo as it is either borderline zoophilia or is just that. Perhaps greater is vampirism and lycanthrope. Anyone who willingly spreads these curses are killed on spot without due process. I should note that Strings of Fate takes place during a post-Napoleonic world setting but with magic and on the edge of going steam punk.

Saying the names of evil deities. In the Empire, worship of evil deities was outlawed centuries ago. Saying any god's name out loud draws their attention, and its a bad idea to get the attention of dark entities. There are instead less than flattering titles that are used when they must be mentioned. The clandestine followers of these gods also don't use their names outside of rituals, out of fear of being caught. However, they use a more complementary title for their gods.

In my world many Dragons are considered beasts of burdens, something akin to an ox or mule Mostly because it takes place many, many years after the reign of dragons, and the dragons evolved to be less energy intensive, so they are smaller, and far less intelligent (Most are about as smart as an intelligent dog). Of course, many find them adorable, and keep them as pets, as one does with horses. Things like Dragonborns are oddities. They're either revered for their strength and might, being put in positions for military and guard purposes, or have good lives as nobility because many nobles see them as cute and adopt them. Most Dragonborn, and indeed most dragons (Dracon, as they are known) can't even use their breath weapons. Except for the military dracons, those *can* use their breathe weapons a they are one of the few breeds that can. (They're toothless sized dragons about, if you were curious). Of course, you got people that are seen as fierce and strong, while also being very cute and adorable, so they tend to be quite popular, if you know what I mean. Kobolds, however, tend to be a no-go for romance. Not fully, but it is seen as quite a bit weirder. Kobolds are treated much more like house cats, their mischievous nature and cutesy looks lets them get away with things mild things, like digging holes, loitering in weird places, or knocking things of shelves, much like cats. There is a divide between "house kobolds" and "street kobolds". The "Street kobolds" think the others are weak, to which the usual response is "You live in the trash can, dig out moldy trash to eat, then sleep under some box, and I am living in this mansion, ring a bell for all the fish I could ever eat, and then take a nap." It's not exactly Taboo to marry a kobold, but it is a bit scandalous.

Not in the entire world, just in the 'orc' clan my character is from: even considering starting a relationship with a member of your own biological race is considered ill fated, because the entire clan has been cursed to not be able to have children that way; and there have been incredibly stupid and horrible attempts to subvert this forcefully, going so far as implanting stolen souls to 'trick' the curse or kidnapping a 'surrogate' mother/father (and then surgically switching their organs out, so the child would still be biologically of the original one). These attempts have luckily been only prevalent in and among the already mindbroken survivors of the slave rebellion, those members of the tribe and former slaves that carried out the rebellion have had enough trauma for multiple lifetimes that they intend to learn from. So after the first amendment to the Curses' Law forbade any kidnappings or taking of slaves, the second amendment forbids same-race couples outright, unless both parties swear an oath under the Curse to never have children themselves. And after some considerations were made this includes adopted children, to avoid the risk of parents murdering to create orphans or kidnapping in their desperation. The singular couple of two 'orc'-humans that have undergone this serve as caretakers of the orphanage, the clans teachers of the young, and uncle and aunt to any that seek one. But they may never be parents, lest a third cleanse become necessary. Those dark days are behind us. The Curse teaches us Freedom.

In Aventuria, the world of The Dark Eye, there is a very strict code regarding wizard's clothes. As a wizard you are forbidden by the law of mages (the Codex Albyricus) to wear a regular dress. You must wear a wizard's robe (the pointy hat is optional but highly encouraged), carry your staff around and make it abundedly clear that you are - in fact - a mage. Vice versa as a commoner you are absoultely not allowed to wear a wizard's robe or pretend to be a wizard. The reason for that is that the craft of magic is highly regulated by the clerus. Since magic doesn't grant you powers based on your convictions and devotion but your accumulation of knowledge, they don't trust magic users. Therefore everyone who deals with a wizard must absolutely know that they are dealing with one.

For instance: The God of Fire, Steel and Technology, Alanor Elderwyrm, is only allowed to be worshipped by the highest of the High Priests of Technologos or battle Queens. The God of Stars, Magic and Beauty, Celeste Aldramount, is not allowed to be worshipped by anyone outside of the Divine caster classes and the goblin shamans that come from the northern areas The Soul Dealer, Krotis Elderwyrm, brother of Alanor is not to be worshipped as doing so means he will take you in as a reaper of souls instead of letting you return to life as another being. UNLESS YOU ARE A NECROMANCER. Then he just lets you be a reaper until ya die. Ironic. The Great Deciever, Sylvi Ulthran, is basically the Loki of this world and is just not usually worshipped due to people liking not being nagas and having legs. Narigalganoth, the Flesh God, is one of three Heretic Gods (along with Silvi and Niraxiis, which is next), and it's worshippers are hunted down and eatsn. Yup. They are cannibalized. It's literally just poetic bullshit but it apparently works. Niraxiis, the Herald of the New Dawn and God of Light and Fervour, is another Heretic God, but his worship is allowed as he is powerless in his current state. I'll put more here later. Goodbye for now, KZbin comment section.

For my section of the world building, the open practice of material plane magic is considered taboo, why, because the original god of the material plane was the moon and the moon was destroyed scattering magic across the world (not my world building), god was revived as a zombie and is hunting for magic, especially their own (3rd campaign in the world) and so over 5 years a horde of physically and magically gifted corpses including two former dead party members move across the region destroying anywhere with a large amount of material plane magic, now he goes to where he was previously sealed in the moon as it has the most magic, not even with just his zombie horde though, now with a man stuck between planes ready to destory the place so that he cannot be sealed again in return for grounding him to the material plane, and the man hired 5 mercenaries with both magical and non magical talents. That is why sorcerers, bards, wizards, artificers and druids have more or less gone into hiding, clerics and warlocks are also being more careful with how much attention they draw in with magic to avoid any of the corpses, most infamously 'the ashen rider' who has taken the most lives 'alone'

my world is brutal and simple (i like grim dark settings). it doesn't bother with lofty philosophical musings, things like slavery, drug trades, and many other atrocities that are morally wrong are seen as just a part of life. so when i was deciding the taboos of my world i went with things that have a more functional reason to ban, adultery leads to confusion of heritage and messy succession lines, so does polygamy, half breeds are seen as undesirable children because many are infertile and their traits are less predictable (just look at any liger), murder bad because society collapses when it isnt.
