“There are also new monsters, like the chawinga, which I created...” *as Chris lovingly strokes his blueray copy of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke below the camera’s view*

Al-mi'raj (like many of the creatures from the earliest Monster Manuals) is an actual creature from mythology, in this case Arabic mythologies. They were flesh eating creatures that devour large animals without even needing to put up much of a fight and their horns are pretty dangerous weapons. People in life were legit terrified of these creatures when the myths were still fresh enough to be believable and would turn to local witches to protect their villages from the creatures. So, hey, might look a little silly to us but, within the context of a D&D world, they can be quite serious.

Screw al-miraj, I'm using conjure lesser elementals to get those elemental spirits. Probably during downtime. I'll conjure a bunch of them, pile them up, and hug the pile.

The almirage (I might have mispelled it) seems like an interesting familiar. I wonder how will players get the ability to summon them. I would be interesting to play a character similar to Radagast from the Tolkien stories that has an almirage familiar.

Out of curiosity, are the chwinga considered elementals because of some connection to Ubtao? As I recall, Ubtao was a primordial (an elemental who took part in the war against the gods) who was made a god after he killed a monster that the gods could not.

DabIMON Storm King's Thunder has a few neat ones, especially a beast with just a little bit more than would be obvious. Also an elemental that is worth a look but you'll probably never be able to use. Tyranny of dragons has a few, primarily the ambush drake. Out of the Abyss has a whole boatload of demon lords. Those are just the ones I've seen.

Yeah, if you're just in the market for new monsters, Out of the Abyss and Curse of Strahd are probably your best bet. The former has eight demon lords that are all above CR 20, really solid representations of them for if you need a BBEG. Curse of Strahd actually has a pretty diverse array of unique creatures, but they tend to be lower level. They also give you Vistani curses, which there's a variety to choose from and you can apply them to human NPCs to give them a bit of character. Third in the running is probably Storm King's Thunder, which has options for diversifying giants by giving them alternate special attacks or traits. That said, all adventures have at least a few custom NPCs with their own special abilities, or facelifted versions of older creatures brought into the fifth edition folds. Also, I do recommend most every 5e adventure module, having bought all of them and played most of them. Storm King's Thunder (and now Tomb of Annihilation) are incredibly good adventures that are between homages to the classics and entirely new and unique adventures, and the rest are at least well put-together, if you can't find conent or story hooks you want to repurose for yourself. The only one that falls short IMO is the first two(Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat) , because they assume a lot of the DM who runs it (you gotta make some things up or handwaive them, there's a few dead ended plots and/or plot holes, and they don't give a lot of mechanics to things that desparately needed them, they just let the narrative drive it). If you're ever in need of a book to pick up and play a new campaign, they're all pretty quality though.

So, basically, the new monster's are recycled forest spirits from Princess Mononoke? Kodamas? kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ7ZhGejr7yIobM Will be interesting to see what mechanics they get I guess. Tough to make something new when there is so much great material out there, not saying it was intentional in this case. I like the idea anyways

I mean, it might not even need to burrow for safety, it could fend off attackers with it's horn. Still, maybe stabbing the ground helps with the digging process.
