Years ago, just after gygax died, my group decided to do a ad&d campaign in honor of him. We rolled up lvl 9 characters with random loot, one of the things I got was a potion of Ghost control. When I rolled this up I said "wow, this will be useless." The first thing we as a group do is find ourselves in a house before the through the looking glass adventure starts. We explore the house and in the attic we find a ghost. We roll initiative and I get the first spot, I immediately down the potion and he fails his save. He is now charmed. He gives us all his treasure up there along with all the information we could want. Later on we find out he is stuck in the attic and can't leave. When the potion wears off we hear a scream of agony as he realizes what has happened. Good times.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity for a side quest: I imagine a ritual spell that sends the players into the mind of the aboleth, an Escher meets Giger dungeon of impossible twisting bone and flowing darkness. Just a few rooms, but with enemies that can take advantage of the twisted terrain in a way the PCs can't. Getting KOed wouldn't be fatal, but it would boot the player back to to reality, so if they go down, they're out of the fight for good. They fight the evil personality using the regular Aboleth stats, and if they win they gain a psychic timebomb with the mind of a child as a follower. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Reminds me of The Worst Assassin Ever. My players decided to dick around and party at a club rather than play the story, so I decided to push the story along and sent an assassin to murder the party leader on the dance floor. A couple of nat 1's later and my hapless assassin trips on his own robes and accidentally commits seppuku in front of everyone. (This is after shouting "death to my enemies!") What happened next still baffles me. The party took so much pity on him they healed him back from the brink of death, sat him at the bar, and bought him drinks and snacks. This is the same party that would later not give a damn about a murder that occurred during a zombie outbreak, or at another time attacked a poor gnome that was simply doing his job of repairing a dungeon. I swear I had the most unpredictable players.
@herman1francis4 жыл бұрын
I have the same experience. When you present your players with obviously hapless npcs that need to be saved they just ignore them because it's boring. I remember during a game of Pugmire I had an alchemy shop ran by an orange cat with stripes named max. Everytime they visited him they stole healing potions from him by having a player with high charisma distract him. In one occasion he rolled a nat 20 so max the cat was convinced that he found someone as passionate about mushrooms as himself and would let everything he was doing down to talk to his new friend while the other party members would steal from him. Later on the campaign the town was set ablaze by a tribe of roaming badgers, and civilians were dying left right and center. I'm sure you can imagine what the party did, they inmediately went to the alchemy shop to save Max the gullible cat. They loved him and were genuinely worried that max would have died. I allowed max to survive of course, the players were so relieved. Never stole from him again either. fun game.

It would depend on how the memories and knowledge are carried over. If it is literally every memory and anything attached then the personality would be carried over (since part of your personality is based on the culmination of ever single emotion related to your memories.) However, if it's just the memories as if they were a film then you may not even realise there was a split personality, since all you would know is that sometimes he acts evil and sometimes he acts good, with no apparent explanation.

Ahahahahahaha... So I have a really ridiculous story about an Aboleth. I was a very... scholarly... barbarian gnome. My weakness was knowledge, especially rare knowledge. (High Int, Low Wis) The party was going into the underdark, and I start hearing a voice. It promises me a glorious library, if I go to it. So, well, *I* know it's probably not good things. My character? Nah, thinks this is the best day of his life. He's down. "What's the worst that could happen?" We find the lake, everyone is like "OKay, we found it, let's go on to our regular purpose for coming down here now?" And then the Aboleth appears. It's not immediately murderous. It appears quite friendly. I do roll insight when it promises to take my character down to show off the library, and fail that roll. So my character *purposely fails* the constitution save to not have water-breathing. Cool, so the Aboleth takes my character down into the depths of the lake (the whole party has written me off as dead), and then insanity really begins. 5e changed grapple mechanics, so when the Aboleth revealed it had *not* brought my character to a vast underwater library, I (with my wonderful strength mod and lucky roll) managed to escape its grasp. Then, because of a feat I had, I can swim just fast enough to stay out of reach, while it spends the next four rounds trying to grab my gnomely self again. And then I reach the shore, and have to hold my breath (take con checks) to leave the water. A minion of some kind appears to try to get everyone to the Aboleth (i don't remember what it was), and one of the party members has a bag of holding, which the DM allows us to fill up with water and put me in until the water breathing wears off. We all lived. I don't remember what we needed from the underdark, but we did not get it that time, and returned to the surface. I think the DM might have been nerfing the Aboleth a bit, based on your descriptions. I feel kinda bad, because my character caused a lot of messes in the campaign, but honestly I think the DM engineered most of them. (My backstory had the most promising hooks, I think.) It was fun, and chaotic.

I mean childrens can be selfish capricious little bastards who will indulge their curiosity by tearing out their toys apart to see what's the inside's like, squish ants and pull the legs of insects. ... and compared to an aboleth your everage adventurer is juuust about the right size... You could make childish aboleth way scarrier than murder aboleth.
@jetmech656 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so...while thats true ***SPOILER*** he's really not joking about the book's description. THe aboleth's child personality is described as "Harmless, Gleeful, and Insanely Curious, posing no threat whatsoever to anyone."

I just wanted to say thank you, because of you story's I got into D&D And I have a funny story about my first time playing that include my bad luck, my dragonborn being beaten upon by two undead ogres, a cult, undead armies, undead beholders, a destroyed alchemist shop, and my character being obsessed with brothels but never finding any, also my brother was playing with me and that was when I learned he had a D&D arson problem So all in all that was my first session/ever game of a fantasy that the DM named (with my help) "The undead March" No BS this happened and it was fun, we're gonna start the next session next week on Monday Once again...Thank you for getting me into D&D, and for the great story's you provide

Reminds me of a hilarious thing that happened in a modified module I ran a few weeks ago. I sorta hyped up these cult amulets that were tied to a demon cult that also had ties to the eldritch horrors, but I did too much of a good job. My players destroyed almost every single one they came across except one, meanwhile I was cringing inside the entire time. When they finally got to the big trap before the first "boss" room, it took them a half hour to determine that not only could they have used the amulets they had been destroying to just walk across with no issue, but to also determine that they could just disarm it easily. Next, for the actual boss fight that was made deadlier because of a wall trap that shot psychic blasts at them, if they had been actually wearing the amulets they wouldn't have even needed to fight the wall trap. Though to be fair, they did have a fairly ingenious solution by "blinding" the wall eye trap (which I allowed because it was partially organic) which caused it to kill one of the tougher enemies in the room and miss all its shots on them.

Clearly the whole point of this encounter is for the various players to have the two splits talking to them randomly, the two drastic sides of the same coin, to confuse them and put them on edge. While they may know what they're dealing with, its erratic behavior will make it seem drastically more terrifying. But the Dice Gods™ can be so hilarious and fickle sometimes.

This actually reminds me of a creature from one of the campaigns I was on. Someone noticed a cute but hurt kitten in an alleyway. As new person to the party tried to help it, it started running away, which would be more or less expected if it was a feral cat, or a not so friendly domesticated kitten. The more experienced members of the party tried to warn the newbie who wanted to help it, but he remarked "What harm can come from a kitten?". After a few minutes of following this kitten (and far enough away from the party for them to be of much help) the player stop running but found himself surrounded over a dozen creatures that looked like kittens but were obviously more dangerous and sinister than your average house cat/kitten.

Oh wow I didn’t get any notifications for this and I just checked the vid again because I like the story. It ended up playing out the reverse of this situation oddly enough. To start we had 2 sessions on this floor including a ten hour finale that we all still talk about and this in particular was trying to find the lost child who was scared of the dark after figuring out how the rooms worked and rotated around. They went on to boats on the river and taking out the tomb dwarves along the way and the hardcover itself stated that it wasn’t the aboleth’s lair so all the creepy images didn’t happen. When they approached the aboleth it was just bobbing around the surface and when it turned around I had them roll for personality. They had rolled for the hostile personality and it went over attempting to charm them. As soon as it malevolently told one of the party in a deep and commanding voice, they started to attack it. On the two boats that they were on they were almost capsized so many times and destroyed and they survived with only 1 person going down and then proceeded to the last floor for the last ten hour session as previously stated. Tl;dr went to find lost kid. Killed evil entity.
