Kenku make amazing town criers. I also played a cleric of the raven queen, the rest of the table learned how quickly I could make a statement with just a simple chirp and body language.

Ooo so like he could write a word and it would speak ?

The Kenku is a difficult race to play because of mimicry. Though if you really practice and think about ways to use your mimicry, and how to be creative with it, you can make a super complex and interesting character. A lot of people fear being a Kenku because, it can be difficult to communicate, even though mm did remove mimicry. I like the idea of them a lot. I feel like there so cool, and fun, I love how it’s a challenge to be talkative, and to convey great role play with.

@@TheSinisterheroes A magical speak-n-spell would be awesome, this one was more a tablet he could write on with his finger, then shake it to clear the board.

@@TheSinisterheroes I have a rather large theater background, with improvisation as a core component, repeating what was said by someone, in a similar vocal tone helps considerably. Body language and just a slight infliction change on a chirp can speak volumes. By far my favorite race to RP as. Ikati, as he was named, was a former sailor and he recited many of his first captains commands. In one port he helped a tinkering gnome get back on their feet and received a clockwork amulet as a gift. Being fond of the sound it made, and mimicking it often, the crew of The Plunk gave him the nickname 'Tik'.

They were cursed by the god they once served for their incessant greed (a nod at how ravens like collecting shiny objects). Their wings and ability to speak with their own voice were taken from them as punishment.

I never knew, that’s cool. Where did you find that?

@@TheSinisterheroes It wasn't a god. It was the demon lord Pazuzu. It's a pretty long story, but the short version of it is, Kenku used to live high up in the mountains, and humans got jealous of them and went to war against them, allying with giant eagles who also didn't like the Kenku because they wanted those same high mountains as their own nesting grounds. There was also some sort of pestilence going on at the time that severely weakened the Kenku. So because of all of this they were getting destroyed, and in their desperation, they prayed for anything to come to save them, and something answered, manifesting as this giant bird with blood red feathers that completely decimated the humans and eagles that were attacking them, and after driving the invaders away, all it required from the Kenku in return was their worship of it. This bird was an avatar of Pazuzu. While the Kenku agreed, eventually, over generations, they kind of started losing interest in continuing on with this worship as they had more or less forgotten why they were doing it in the first place, the tales having turned to myths. Because of them breaking their pact like this, Pazuzu cursed them to lose their wings and voice.

Kenku are fun to roleplay. I’m dming in a campaign with a kenku bartender npc that will repeat whatever the players say when they order a drink.

others say that they were scouts and explorers for the Wind Dukes of Aaqa. Whatever the truth, according to legend, the kenku betrayed their master. Unable to resist the lure of a beautiful sparkling treasure, the kenku plotted to steal the item and escape to the Material Plane. Unfortunately for the kenku, their master discovered their plan before they could enact it. Enraged, the entity imposed three dreadful curses upon them. First, the kenku's beloved wings withered and fell away from their bodies, leaving them bound to the earth. Second, because their ingenuity and skill had turned toward scheming against their patron, the spark of creativity was torn from their souls. Finally, to ensure that the kenku could never divulge any secrets, their master took away their voices. Once the entity was satisfied that they had been sufficiently punished, the kenku were set loose on the Material Plane.

I think it would be more helpful to use the current printing of the race when discussing their abilities instead of the legacy one. As both Mimicry and Expert Duplication were changed slightly in the MotM printing.
@TheSinisterheroes10 ай бұрын
Oh yeah it is easier consider you don’t just speak in repeated phrases. Though if it could be done right and maybe fun. For the lay person it makes it so much easier.
@Klaital110 ай бұрын
@@TheSinisterheroes I was more referring to the actual mechanics of those abilities that you posted on the screen. Mimicry was changed to no longer be a contested check, and instead just the person trying to figure out it's not real makes an insight check against a DC based on your Charisma. And Duplication was changed so you can copy your OWN work with it as well. Flavor wise also, I think the new one is better, even with that you still have mimicry so nothing is stopping you from playing the can only speak through mimicry type even with it, but your not forced to do it anymore if you don't want.
