This 1944 film - originally titled as "Beachhead to Berlin" - is a rare World War 2-era color documentary produced by the Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) for the U. S. Department of Defense about the historical event known as the Allied Invasion of Normandy. The film centers on the activities of the Coast Guard on D-Day, from practice maneuvers to the amphibious landings. It also documents the aftermath of the Normandy invasion. The film was shot by Coast Guard photographers and supervised by American movie producer Gordon Hollingshead.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
The Western Allies of World War 2 launched the largest amphibious invasion in history when they attacked Normandy, located on the northern coast of German-held France, on 6 June 1944. The invaders were able to establish a beachhead as part of Operation Overlord after a successful "D-Day," the first day of the invasion.
Allied land forces came from the United States, Britain, Canada, and Free French forces. In the weeks following the invasion, Polish forces and contingents from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece and the Netherlands participated in the ground campaign; most also provided air and naval support alongside elements of the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the Royal Norwegian Navy.
The Normandy invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air raids and naval shelling. In the early morning, amphibious landings commenced on five beaches codenamed Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah, with troops from the United States landing on Omaha and Utah, Great Britain landing on Gold and Sword and Canada landing on Juno. During the evening the remaining elements of the airborne divisions landed. Land forces used on D-Day sailed from bases along the south coast of England, the most important of these being Portsmouth.

Why does this film only show American soldiers and sailors? Why is there no input shown of British and Canadian troops and sailors? On D Day itself, while 75,000 American troops landed at Utah and Omaha Beaches, a few miles along the coast 85,000 British and Canadian troops landed at Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches the same morning. You'd never know it from this archive footage...

I really like watching these documentaries. It tells me what WWII was like for my Grandfather. He signed up right after Pearl Harbor. My Grandfather was in the Army, 2 Uncles were in the Army, 1 Uncle was a Marine, my Stepbrother was 101st Airborn, My brother was Navy, and my Daughter is Marine.

If I had to rank 10 most important battles in US history, D-day would NOT make the list. Without invasion of Normandy, Hitler still loses. Just takes a year longer

I think you have a point, but without western occupation of the continent, who knows what the balance of power would of been postwar? Think how NATO shaped the modern world. It has its roots from the results of D Day.
