Sad to think that we might have no one left anymore in the next five years. I'm 21 but barely every had the opportunity to interact with someone who lived through these times. It is a very strange feeling. When I was little they where all in their 80s and now most of them are gone. Slowly but surely we're growing ever more disconnected from this part of our recent history.

Canadian immigrant. I was extremely lucky to have met several WW2 vets in my community. Speaking with them and hearing their stories helped me understand the sacrifices made by those hailing from my adoptive homeland. It’s disappointing to see that people in my country celebrate ideological left wing holidays more than important events like D Day.

My grandfather was a German general who notably oversaw the Atlantic Wall. I was in Normandy in June 2015, 2019 and 2024 as well as in Bastogne (Belgium) in December 2019 for the celebrations of these battles. I am always moved to see the veterans of the allied countries. I think this war could have ended sooner if intelligent German officers had shown more courage

Well I think most of them would be horrified to see the country they fought for. I like many veterans of my generation are of the same opinion. I wouldn’t bother to serve again given the state of the country these days I am sad to say. Also let’s remember the boys down Italy who eighty years ago were liberating Rome and are largely ignored and forgotten by the media circus and political class. Anyone would think D Day was the be all of the war. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hats off to them but literally millions of British and Commonwealth troops were getting stuck in from Italy to Burma and the Pacific. It’s a disgrace that their sacrifices are largely ignored by the media and the political class. Normandy was a holiday camp compared to the war in the Far East. No disrespect but there were far worse places to be serving in June 44. Ask the Chindits and The British Indian Army and the boys in Italy. Raise your glasses for those largely ignored units. The ones without Private Ryan style publicity.

They set an example and gave their lives that the world would be free. If we let their bravery and beliefs fade away their deaths will have been in vain. Hitler was a politician whose policies and soldiers killed millions before our politicians stopped ignoring the threat and joined the fight. If the American politicians and people who wanted to isolate America had gotten their way, our allies could not have done this alone. Saying not to make a political statement ignores the direct connection between those who control countries and their direct effect on democracy or the return of dictators. We can’t let this generation and our soldiers fighting for freedom from dictators die in vain.

Honours and all the respect be for all the Army, Navy and Air Force (men and ladies) who prepared for and fought in the Overlord Operation, the famous D-Day in France (Normandy)! Even with sacrifice of their own life, all began the invitation for all Europe people to give hands, for the peace forever and in order for democracy, as all, of us, must be like brothers!God accept, in the eternity, all them. And to be never forgotten their nice and admirable examples, let us pray, nowadays and very often, for God! D-Day was, is and will be, always, a remarkable and unforgetable date! Here, just a portuguese and christian family, in Portugal. Respectfully. L+E

There are only 2 airworthy Lancaster bombers in the world currently, 1 in Britain (pa474) which is part of the Battle of Britain memorial flight and 1 in Canada (fm213) a third in britain (nx611 "Just Jane) is only available for taxi runs but is being made airworthy. Unfortunately these aircraft are limited in their use currently due to the spitfire crash that claimed the life of Typhoon and BBMF pilot squadron leader Mark Long. Better safe than to have another tragedy on a day as special as this.

Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do not honor the memory of their ancestors are doomed to extinction. The unconditional act of surrender was signed by Marshal of the USSR Georgy Zhukov, who led the army that liberated all of Europe and all of humanity from fascism and erected the Soviet red flag on the Reichstag, on May 8, 1945 in the suburbs of Berlin and the witnesses were signed by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, Marshal Arthur Tedder (Great Britain), General K. Spaats (USA) and General J. de Lattre de Tassigny (France).

Of the many lost men on that day, and the days following, King Solomon said as a wise old man: “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” There were many stories of miraculous deliverance among them. Only "in the judgment" will "the saints" come to understand the rules of engagement between Christ and Satan that allowed GOD to intervene for some of those men as He did for Desmond Doss on Okinawa.

Up till now, no minority soldiers or troops or regiments from the colonies have been included in any D-Day honours or remembrances. What about the Indian soldiers, British troops of Caribbean descent and even regiments from North Africa and West Africa who were drafted into this War, knowing little or nothing about what it was all about? African American military men who were suffered segregation but were still forced to fight in war that made Zero difference to their lives or future? This ceremony has always been for Europe and people of European descent who continue to ignore and sideline other minorit ethnicities , decade after decade.
