Cast iron pan works too. Another one on top works even better, so you get this cast iron meat sandwich. After a while you get this ice cold pan, so you know that heat transfer occurs. Of course, if it's ice cold you might have to change pans! But you know what? I bought a microwave with inverter technology and defrosted at 30%. Amazing. Did it for 6 min on a large chicken breast and it defrosted without any cooking!

And most of the meat is separated from large amounts and put into ziplock freezer bags and when I lay hamburgers, chicken, etc. on it t frosts very quickly. No problem. It eliminates mess with water or anything else. I never time it because I don't need to it is ready any time I am ready to cook it. I don't know what kind you are using but mine works wonders.

I've had one of these defroster platters for probably 20 years ! I never knew that it was re-marketed recently under D Frost Wonder. I've always used my defroster platter (looks just like the D Frost Wonder) and thought it worked perfectly. What I don't care for about defrosting in a bowl of water is that you have to put the frozen item- i.e. steak, hamburg patty, chicken, in a ziploc or plastic sealed bag which, after you're done with it, you either throw it away, or wash it which I find to be a pain and is not recommended by the Food Safety people (to wash a used ziploc bag especially one that has contained a meat product). So I will continue to use my 20 yr old defrosting platter/plate and skip the plastic bag in cold water routine. But thanks, James, for another great review.
@CaroleMorin6 жыл бұрын
Joan, I have a 20-year old defroster platter too and I use it a lot. Never really tried the ziploc bag because we are very eco friendly and that would be a waste. I just put my foam tray upside down on the platter and let the platter do its thing. Good enough for me.

As our host points out, you likely have something better in your kitchen already; what you're looking for is the thickest heaviest metal, that will work better than the defrost wonder if it's more metal what I also do and trust me this isn't for everyone you can also use metal and give it a little heat from burners to assist with thawing but It's a bit tricky you have to do it right or things can go wrong. Another key tip is that if you vacuum sealed your food before freezing there won't be much of any air which is a slower heat transfer medium when you place it on whatever surface to thaw still in its sealed plastic.
@Sarrahp16 жыл бұрын
I know its not the recommended method but I have always used hot water & Ziploc bags. I have never gotten food poisoning from it as long as you cook the meat / fish thoroughly or to recommended temp.

I bought one of these years ago, and was less than impressed. I had to repeatedly run the thing under hot water because, once it reached room temperature, it was pretty much useless. I also found that, rather than defrosting the meat evenly, it was actually starting to cook the outer layer. You're right, if you're defrosting meat with a lot of contours, like bone-in chicken, forget about it. In my experience, soaking the meat in a zip-loc in a bowl or sink of cold water was a superior method. I ended up giving my D Frost Wonder away.

The thing is, you don't need to defrost a hamburger patty to cook it. Just throw it into the pan frozen and get the cooking started. You'll be done cooking long before any method defrosts it. You do need to defrost chicken to cook it in most cases, though. I find that it's fastest in the microwave on low heat / defrost setting.
@kfl611 Жыл бұрын
I found a lot of things you can cook from frozen. I prefer an old fashioned electric skillet with a tight fitting lid. The heat browns the meat on one side and the steam produced, along with a tight fitting lid, defrosts the top of the meat. Turn and cook, if the meat is getting too steamed, set the lid cock eyed so some steam can escape or take off the lid so all sides will brown. You can also line an old fashioned aluminum electric skillet with parchment paper or non-stick aluminum to make clean up easier OR put some water in your pan when done, a little dish soap, boil the water and turn it off and let it soak. Just watch that the boiled soap water doesn't make too many suds and over flow.

It may take a few more minuets more than advertised but nothing works true to form all the time and this will thaw quicker than normal. Try it yourself, I believe you will be impressed.

A problem with the big thaw (counter defrosting) is that it puts you at a greater risk of foodborne illnesses. It really comes down to pure luck and the quality of the meat when you use this method. My mother always defrosts on the counter and I have gotten sick from it. Ever since then, I only eat meats that have been properly defrosted. If you plan your meals ahead of time, you won't run into an issue where you need to quickly defrost your food. For those of you that will argue that you've been doing it for years without an issue, I'm happy for you. But if you have a family, its better to think about their health.

Ice cubes melt faster because the spot that it touches melts and then new still frozen area touches the aluminum. Ice cubes do not defrost to unfrozen ice cubes, they unfreeze in a liquid. Food on the other hand defreezes into food that is in room temperature.

Just a quick tip, leave your bowl under cool slightly running water, it'll defrost even faster. If you dont have the time to let it defrost in the fridge this is the safest way and how its done in the culinary world. Has to do with conduction, the water also doesnt let the frozen item act like an ice cube so you always have a warmer temp. Yah hot water isnt as safe. Specially wouldnt do it with chicken.

@Sara Rodriguez Erena well you should never thaw any kind of meat at room temperature make sure if your defrosting meat with water that it’s hot running water or you can also thaw in the cooking process or most microwaves have a defrost setting now but you have to cook the meat ASAP when it come out of then microwave to avoid the growth of pathogens. Just remember to keep yourself safe and never thaw at room temp :)

It works bruv, not in minutes though. A whole chicken that completely defrosts in say 4 - 6 hours in cold weather like in the uk , you may cut that time down to 2 hours. Doesn’t work in minutes. I’ve just ordered mine based a trusted friends recommendation. I don’t know whether minutes is the claim on the package. My friends swore it works and had helped them a lot. But she told me not in minutes. I’ve ordered it , am not expecting it to defrost a whole chicken in minutes.
