I made the clamps to, I order only the laser cut legs with the drawings and bolts. Futher you can use material you have leing around so as most of us have. I make 4 and they are working very well. I can recommand them to you all. For the long treaded part I used stainles treaded rod M10x1,5 that works very well.

All our spring centers have that inverted cone on other side, just pull grub screw out and turn them around, not sure on the brand we have but not near as much play as yours had, we actually keep one with inverted cone stuck out and other one with the pointy tip stuck out to make it simple 😉

Max, great start to your DIY "Kant-Twist" Clamps & don't be concerned about waffle, it's good info. As an old Jeweller, we used the same JM "Easyflo" flux & would add in a few drops of dishwashing liquid into the jar, to help it break surface tension & capillary into the joint better.

looks like a cool kit to learn some skills on, when you were doing the parting I was on the edge of my seat ha-ha, looked like you were setting it up at 80 before you moved it closer to the chuck and went 85. definitely good call not to drill right through really wouldn't look anywhere as good as the cups with solder. these will probably be the most accurately built clamps ever. will have to see what freight from Canada is like.

Yes, we've all been put on notice for using tee type tap handles with a tap follower! A lot of my taps don't have either a male or female conical centre which makes it even harder to follow best practice. That Coventry die head is a nice piece of kit. I stupidly passed up on the opportunity to "stocktake" one from a capstan lathe that came into our possession many years ago. Regards, Preso

I've seen other machinists have a different angle on the parting tool. It leaves no nub on the desired side, looks like 10-15 degrees.
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 4 ай бұрын
It does have that angle , it is ok for steel but needs to be a bit more severe for brass as the fatter end of the tit was breaking off before the small end . Watch when the tool first contacts the brass . Cheers 👍

Up to your armpits in projects as usual eh Max. 👍 Was wondering what the hold up was with the JFMT lathe. Will be interesting to see what’s been going on. These clamps look like a fun project & handy tools to have once your done. As I I don’t (yet) have silver soldering capability, could I not just thread and tap the slides & brass cups & loctite them on maybe? 🤷‍♂️ Will have to go look up the kits and see what they cost. Keep up the good work, will be looking forward to the next instalment. 👍👍👍🇦🇺.

i would not have silver soldered (brazed) the cups on to the rods. There will never be any longitudinal force, so I would have just drilled for an interference fit and heated them to get them on. Simpler to do and gives a better appearance without needing buffing. Shouldn't the screw be given an Acme thread or buttress thread?

Hi Max, I use Iscar tooling and parting tools. I also have a Kennametal parting tool and in my opinion cuts marginally better than the Iscar parting tool. Where do you purchase silver steel, I get mine from Radio Spares Philippines , shipped ex UK. Is there a supplier in Perth?
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 4 ай бұрын
The silver steel was an assortment i found on E Bay a few years back . Can not remember where it came from . I have not looked for a supplier here yet . I think the Kennametal blades use the same or similar insert as the older Iscar ones before the Tang Grip came out . I don't think they can take as much curry as the Tang Grip . Don't ask me how i found that out ! Cheers 👍

Hey Max, Question for you. Would you recommend doing an oil hardening process after making the threaded parts? Or are they strong enough?
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 4 ай бұрын
I would not worry as that steel will not oil harden & i feel it does not need to be hard . The 12L14 steel has to go through a carburizing process or similar to increase the carbon content to harden . Also you would not want the top where the cross hole is hard . 👍
