D&H #18 Comes Home - "NKP 190" Arrives In Scranton

A very, very historic event happened yesterday evening in Scranton on 5/19/2023. Back in March, preservationist Doyle McCormack sold his NKP 190 to GVT, where it would then make the trip back to home rails in Scranton, PA where it operated over 40 years ago on the Delaware and Hudson. At approximately 5:30pm, the PA rolled up to the DL's Bridge Sixty tower for a quick welcome home party before being handed off to Steamtown for a temporary display. In the coming weeks, the mechanical crews at the Delaware Lackawanna railroad will complete the final steps in getting "America's Diesel" running under her own power and pulling trains once again. Great way to pay tribute to the Delaware & Hudson bicentennial year, 1823 - 2023. Great vid ... thanks for being there for those of us that weren't!

I had a cab ride in it as it was D&H number 18, from Albany to Saratoga. Could have gone farther, but that was our stop. Something I’ll never forget. I posted pictures of the trip on the web years ago. Where???

The PA looks spectacular! I love it! And the other ALCOs and MLWs behind her aren’t too shabby either! Wow! Railfan paradise!

@@davidng2336 it’s a shame. The HR616 was the last new 251 engine locomotive built in North America. The last unit of this order was the very first locomotive built with desktop controls, if I am not mistaken.

I got to see this PA in the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland when I was much younger. I thought it was beautiful, with the livery and classic, streamlined look. I'll miss it, but it's nice to see it return home.

SO glad this beautiful girl made it to her new home safe and sound. CAN'T wait to see her in operation. Wonder what paint scheme DL will choose. I believe she'll look great in the GVT/DL corporate white and gray.

I'd like to see it in Erie colors or maybe EL? I thought there was a non-running dummy unit to go with this? I didn't know the owner was planning to sell it. Nice to see it back in close to home territory.

I have a feeling it’s not going to be in the GVT scheme. I know a lot of people dislike that paint job, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it on the PA. Everybody is expecting it to be repainted in D&H colors and be run as a part of the DL’s heritage fleet

@@AustinTrainsOfficial Not likely D&H colors. Too many changes and expense. All new stainless side panels, Custom made stainless grillwork. Doyle gave the original number boards to #59 in Texas . Repaint not on the priority list.

@@1940limited The dummy you are most likely thinking of is the other PA that came back from Mexico with this one. That is the one that is down in Texas being restored to it's original Santa Fe #59. No connection to EL. The NKP connection is Doyle McCormack . Repaint not on the priority list Will stay the way it is for awhile.

@@trezjr73you’d have to raise A LOT to get those two. One of the only reasons Doyle was able to get the two he did was because they were in pieces. DH17 and DH19 (their current numbers) are both complete and at least one is operational. No museum in their right mind would give that up

Fun fact: this alco pa1 was a locomotive that was selled for ndem (a mexican railroad)

Alco PA returns home. NKP #190 is back in Pennsylvania and they'll restore NKP #190 back to operating condition. Idk what scheme they'll restore NKP #190 in.

Is this Nickel Plate able to run on its own, possibly one day, or does it have no motive power.

It has a prime mover from an MLW M420 already inside and is mostly complete. The DL shops are finishing up the last little bit of work needed to make her run again. Hopes are she will be running by the end of the year or early next year

Does this loco still have a 16 cylinder prime mover, or has it been replaced with a 12 cylinder unit?

I do hope they repaint it into something less repulsive. The NKP scheme was the worst.

We will have to see. The only reason why it looks like the way it does now is because Doyle wanted to recreate something he rode as a child.
