Definitely an improvement on the original. I'm going to make something similar this week. But I plan to put the bottom 2x4s on their edges, too. Much stronger than laying them flat. Thanks for the good video.

I've watched both of these videos. Thanks for taking the time to share! I just bought a property in Maine and I'm getting 3 cords delivered and haven't wanted to spend a bunch of money on racks. This is a good alternative. Thanks again!

I saw one of the comments here where they recommended stacking the wood bark side up to shed rain. That sounds like a good idea, although I typically put a tarp over it anyway (damp wood contributes to creosote build-up in the chimney flue). Another thing I do is position my wood rack so that the prevailing wind blows through the wood, helping to dry it faster. Here in Wyoming we get a LOT of wind. Anyway, well done!

Maybe go with a 4x4 on bottom next time as two x four will start sagging in middle
@joejoe-lb6bw

That was my first thought. I would even go for three pieces.

I love your idea. Simple and easily moved if needed. But I think if you turned the bottom 2x4’s on their side as well and screwed each end to its corresponding upright 2 x 4, you could double the strength of your design. But it would require some 2 1/2 inch deck screws and a drill and so not be completely tool free. I would also add two more concrete blocks on either side of the center block to eliminate any chance of bowing in wetter environments.

always use your 2x4 on edge. Dont put weight on the flat side.

Thanks for the wood rack idea my man, great job. Also to fix the 1x4 issue, glue and nail a 2x2 in the back of the 1x4 for more support. Done. I did this with a 2x4 nailed in the back of a 2x8 I used for wood ramps for a walk-behind mower and I can drive my zero-turn mower on those things. Very strong.

I just commented about this in your first video. You've done the fix the way I just described it. It works just perfectly. I have old 4x4's for the bottoms and cinderblocks that I've gotten on craigslist for nothing. It basically didn't cost anything because I just picked up the parts. These are great. And you're right about level surface. I've been using this design for several years. Put a tarp on top (only the top) and you're good to go. Oh, it looks like you're trying to stack the wood tight without much sunlight. Get air gaps in there so it dries easier

Good fix. I’m new to this backyard improvement and made mistakes. I constructed this type of rack. One important thing is the lateral balance. The soil the cement blocks rest on will change due to weather and even critters burrowing. That wood is heavy so this could be dangerous.

Looks better. I would recommend putting the bottom 2x4s vertically. Will be stronger over time

In addition, add an extra row of cinderblocks making a total of five instead of three. Otherwise, nice job.

Do the same thing to the bottom 2x4"s and it will last longer.

😂 design flaw? That was a personal mistake. Used the wrong sized boards and had them face the wrong way. Plus had way too much wood on that rack. You really thought those little thin pickets were gonna hold all that weight? Was a flaw on your own behalf not the design.

I just commented on your other video about the end bars. Too thin and you didn't turn them on edge. I use this racking myself and it definitely works. For drying I do put a tarp on top but not over the sides.

Nice video! One tip I would offer for added strength would be to cut a few smaller 2x4s pieces in order to create some square frames for each edge of this rack, keeping each 2x4 flipped vertical to the firewood. Essentially creating a box frame for each of the three sides. Personally I'd secure them with structural screws to keep each section from spreading. I know it goes slightly against to no tools needed concept, but could even be done with a hand saw and a screw driver if needed. It would also help keep those new 2x4s in line from spinning and warping with the temperature changes. It's the same concept as blocking used in construction.

I think that using 4 boards on the ends instead of 2 would be better reinforcement? Great design by the way, I like the longer version. Thanks!

Not a design flaw, you shouldn't put weight on the flat, they should all be turned on edge, I have never seen a video instructing to use the flat, always the edge.

Does the pressure treated wood have arsenic? If so it doesn’t do anything to the logs if you use it to cook with

Looks great now! Have you or anybody else broken a cell on the cinder blocks from the leverage of the side load when doing this? I've heard claims of this happening but never knew if it was a real or frequent problem.
