I am a Singaporean. First of all, this discrimination incident is obviously wrong. Secondly, you don't be surprised that this Indian.maybe is from Malaysia. Thirdly, I personally think that as long as such discrimination act or talk is not in front of the victim, it is "okay". Which country don't have discrimination? It is just that this Indian is unlucky to have his act caught. If you look at China social media, you can see how China people calling Japanese nasty names, calling Vietnamese monkey, African chocolate people etc... When I was young, I remembered that there was once I was in a bus stop, a China auntie asked me whether I have small change, I said I don't have. This China auntie asked another China women whether she had small change and said sarcastically that only China people help China people ! I was young then, and I don't dare to talk back. Singaporeans generally don't said such remarks in front of the victim, but China people will do so...

Don't let a bad experience spoil your trip.

As Singaporean Chinese, we faced discrimination when we travel to many western countries because many PRC tourists created very image for Chinese due to their bad behaviour. Foreigners wont be able to tell whether we are from Singapore or PRC. It is very frustrating. Did u in many hotels in Europe, they actually had to segregate PRC tourists from the rest in breakfast area? This is because PRC people will just grab all the food and deprive the rest of food. This is just one example and there are many other cases. I remember CCP did try to educate the population how to behave when they travel. Hopefully things improve quickly.

About talking loudly, I remmember a church in Italy refused to let my group enter because previous PRC groups made a lot of noise inside, when there was a big notice asking for silence while inside. Fortunately later they realized we are from SG so we were allowed in.
I can't forget this encounter with tourists from China. There I was with a couple of friends on the railway bridge over River Kwai in Thailand, admiring the bridge and river below. The Chinese tourist wanted to take a photo from where we were so instead of waiting for us to move away or asking politely for us to make way for her, she shouted at us to 'Rang yi rang, rang yi rang!!' before practically pushing us away. We were flabbergasted!

Chinese from mainland do not apologise for mistake and just walk away, which is quite irritating what wrong with a simple apology.

The only personal and unpleasant encounter with a China Chinese: During last Chinese New Year gathering at Shangri-la Hotel, I met this man standing near me while I was waiting for my daughter. Out of friendliness, I told him that he should avoid visiting during that period as many places were closed for business. Guess what? He responded condescendingly and rudely, “新加坡有什么好玩的, 我只是过来上赌场!” He didn’t even look into my eyes as he spoke. I didn’t bother to respond or react; I just walked away to another spot. Otherwise, those ex-colleagues from China were pretty nice. 🙂
Last month in June while on the mrt in Singapore, one China tourist (中国大妈) just cut her way through the queue into the mrt car while dragging her children with her and eagerly jumping onto the empty seat and urged her son to sit between her and the other passenger when there is no space in between. Her son was embarrassed at the moment and refused to do. Majority of the Chinese tourist nowadays are still ok and mindful as compared to 10 years ago.
Scrolling through comments, seems like there are many who had unpleasant encounters with Chinese nationals. It’s ok to think your country is much better when you go travelling- just that most of us would not say it out loudly for others to hear!😂 I like your attitude of openness and having that natural curiosity about another country’s culture, people etc. that is what makes travels so enriching - even when we come across unpleasant things like when i got pickpocketed in Paris! Every country has something beautiful and ugly about it.
