I expecting Reimu was going to be the final boss with the new blood effect on her spellcards. Then Flandre was up next, which was a cool role reversal and also a good way to use a boss that had only been fought once up to that point. Still, she wasn't exactly final boss material due to having the same theme and spellcards as she did in the Yorigami Sisters story. Then comes the only Stage 8 in the game, featuring a new boss I fully expected to stay an observer and it's brutal. Glad they added a Toutetsu story and Challenge Mode (boss rush with any character), the game really needed those.

I find it hilarious that the build up to this fight and the fight itself are so freaking serious, and then the reason for the fight in the first place is just Jyoon and Shion starting a touring business.

Matara is like a 'good' Yukari. Extremely ancient, powerful, intelligent, and knows it. They both work in subtle ways, but while Yukari does it out of laziness (and to screw with people), Matara does it because she wants to teach the people under her how to work on their own and grow from the experiences. Even her themes sounds much softer and less boastful than Yukari's, like she knows she's powerful and doesn't need grandeur to show herself off, completely and rightfully confident in her abilities.

....No, it's the other way around. Yukari acts like a lazy shit, but is genuinely altruistic and acts out of a genuine love for Gensokyo. Remember the end of FS? Yukari purposely pulls the strings to save Kosuzu's life. Okina meanwhile per ZUN doesn't give a shit about life at all. She's a classical god who sees Gensokyo as her domain, and does everything in her pure self-interest.

@@rainspectre3153 Selfishness and apathy does not mean evil. In fact, both of those views are Gensokyo-centric. Yukari loves Gensokyo, but it's more about which people can contribute to it and which people can't. Matara is selfish and only cares about the influence of her own domain, but that domain does in fact include those in her cycle. I never said she cared about everyone, just the people under her. Edit: And I put 'good' under apostrophes for a reason.

Stand proud." - Matara on the Extra Stage Could you imagine Yukari saying such a speech? On the face of a loss, no less? Okina absolutely refuses to be typecasted to a single role as a character and I love that for her. The general consensus is that she's just as nasty as Yukari, but at the same time she's full of those phrases and motivations that derail this image. ZUN knows his stuff.

@@hasneverdoneanythingproductive Yukari is on Tzeentch levels of half-truths and refusing to answer someone directly, while Okina straight-up tells you what she expects of you and what she thinks of you if you reach her. Again, both are only interested in fulfilling their own goals, but only Okina is self-assured enough to not screw around with people if they're competent enough to find and confront her face-to-face. It's ironic that the goddess of secrecy and hiddenness is more honest than the youkai gremlin. 10/10 would worship.

@@GyaruRespecter There's even more to that, if you track her connections to Okuninushi, you'll find out that one of Okina's identities is Myoken, the God of Stars and the deification of the North Star and Venus. Not the first time Okina is associated with stars though, considering the pattern on her tabard is that of the Big Dipper or Tenryuu, the celestial dragon that makes up the constellation itself. This in turn, ties her to Amenominakanushi, the first of the Kotoamatsukami, God of creation, and the first god that emerge during the creation of the universe. Not only that, Amenominakanushi is also conflated with Amatsumikaboshi, a god of evil or chaos that live even before Kotoamatsukami's emergence when the universe is in the state of primeval chaos. So it can be said Okina is neither good or evil, since she embodies both concepts and does whatever she likes.

I am pretty sure that Shinto Gods can change their appearance to whatever they like, hair color, race, species, gender, etc etc. Also Okina Matara is based on Okuninuishi, Matarajin and Hata no Kawakatsu, none of which are russian.
