As a "Nobody U" undergrad I can say this: What's quite possibly the best part of this story is the fact that Michigan Tech basketball is not really followed or cared about by any of the student population, our main sport of choice is hockey, but we've all taken this very personally, and suddenly we're all massive basketball fans. No there wasn't. It was education day so there were like 20-30 different schools there. I am from green bay and went to that game to cheer on my college Michigan tech. There were a good number of tech fans though. It also helped that our lead scorer is from Ashwaubenon which is next to green bay which I think brought in more tech fans. He did have like a group of friends from the area there a few rows behind were I sat.

I remember not too long ago when King University, a D2 school who plays in one of the lowest tier D2 conferences (Conference Carolinas), went across the mountain to Boone and beat Appalachian State. Lenoir-Rhyne from the D2 South Atlantic Conference beat Louisville last season also.

What did they have to lose? They were complete ass for the last 30 years and took a swing on a guy hoping he’d make a difference for the program and bringing in recruits. Turns out gottlieb failed, just like every other head coach that comes here. Idk if it’s even a fail so far tbh, the basketball team is just as bad as always but we have more publicity than at any other time in program history

It's a much harder travel than other Michigan schools with bigger DII pedigrees like Grand Valley, Ferris State, Saginaw Valley, or even Northern Michigan also in the UP. Not opposed to the idea at all though, Go Huskies!

The top of D2 and the top of D1 isn't that different either. Looking at XC or track where you can just compare times side by side, the best D2 teams are in the 20-30 range in D1.

​@@karsonkevin2Cross country and the distance side of track is a lot different from other sports in that you really don't need a ton of resources to run a successful program, just a coach who can write a good training plan and motivate the athletes to execute the training and on race day. Also these aren't money-making sports so the incentive to attend a big school is lower and it's easy to bring in some fast east Africans who want an education. All those factors lead to some of the best programs being in the lower divisions. Football and basketball aren't like that. Oregon would probably hang 80+ on whoever the top D2 school is, and Auburn in basketball could win by 60 against the top D2 school because the talent gap is so big in those sports.

yeah this was definitely really tasteless by the Green Bay Coach. And it exposes a very questionable mindset he has. To question what you learn from playing lesser talented teams is really baffling. You can always learn from other opponents. It doesn't matter if they aren't the most stacked team, they could have a new approach or perspective you haven't seen, they could have a style your never considered, there is always something to learn from others, and thinking your approach is perfect and without flaw is how you stagnate growth. and either way, a tune up game is supposed to be how you see where you are in order to prepare for those "bigger games." It's a chance to learn about your own team before the stakes are high. For him to not even get that is crazy. and yeah I think it was very tone deaf for him to call a d2 team as "nobody U" as if University of Green Bay is some big team in Division I, but they really aren't. I'm sure to the Power 6, GB is a "Nobody U." The Lack of Self Awareness is painful. It's wild that coaches on small teams can be so arrogant. Not to mention it was completely disrespectful too, very unprofessional and classless. I am glad he was served some humble pie and I hope he can rethink his approach.

They been playing D-I since the eighties. They haven’t done anything of note except get to the round of 32 in 1994. I didn’t know any of this I just looked it up.

They had very good teams in the '90s when Dick Bennett was their coach and Tony Bennett was their PG. They beat Jason Kidd and Cal in the first round of the '94 Tournament. So they've had their moments- just not for a long time. Speaking of Tony Bennett, maybe UWGB should call him up and see if he wants to un-retire.
