I've found my favorite normal unique armor to upgrade is Twitchthroe. The defense boost to exceptional is fantastic, and the modifiers are very useful for so many characters.

Great vid, well done... great presentation, you earned my sub! In the past I upgraded quite a few uniques.. for my gold find barb, tarn, chance gloves and goldwrap upgrade to elite .. had 1200%+ gambleds a lot! 100M at a time..

One item you missed was The Hand of Broc, which provides dual leech and low requirements, though the extra defense is pretty low and the original defense is almost non existent. The runes required are pretty easy to farm though, so it's not a big waste of materials, especially if you have lots of them.

It’s definitely not bad. The main reason why I didn’t include it is because Life and Mana leech numbers cut by 50% in Nightmare, and cut to 66% in Hell. So Hand’s 3% turns into 1.5% in Nightmare.

When it comes to upgrading, I look at it like this. If I can farm the runes from Nightmare countess to make a significantly better weapon/armor it's not worth it. So for the most part it has to be better than an Honor weapon, Stealth, ancient pledge, or Lore. And since defense does not do enough to really chase, I would say it's just not worth it outside of Bonesnap (If I ever find a 300% bonesnap I'm taking that sucker to elite), and the belts.

This video is good. Good analysis, but it is a little too generous. Most of these items don't have a use. Defense is useless for anything except mercenaries or pvp. So I think the useful normal uniques to upgrade should be: Gloves: None Shields: None Helms: None (or undead crown if you don't have bulwark or tal mask for merc in hell for some reason) Armor: None (or Rockfleece if you can't make smoke, treachery, or duress yet in hell for some reason) Belts: goldwrap (and nightsmoke if you can't make a caster belt yet for some reason) Boots: goblin toe, but only if you're kicking Weapons: bonesnap and woestave. Bonesnap is good for whirlwind, fury, and iron golem. Woestave is a great budget weapon for a d clone a2 merc.

Total agree on the steel driver, I like to use it while leveling a barbarian damage is insane for nightmare and can take u into hell easily (find a little life and mana leech and find some crushing blow for the bosses) the 40% IAS makes for a whirlwind killer

Extra defense is useless in this game, but definitely on things like a tarnhelm. compared to the use of the upgrading items, the utility of upgrading any of those doesn't hold up. Hand of broc and treads, iceblink and darkglow are literally trash, you're going to be using stealth if you're a caster or treachery/lionheart/hustle if you're melee. MAYBE some use case with CBF for hawkmail, but certainly not worth upgrading for a bit more defense.

It's useful af. If you don't have access to certain runewords then you gotta upgrade. Also, there's only runewords for armor shields helms and weapons. Lenymo, gwrap, nightsmoke, lenymo, are great upgrades. Gobtoe and tearhaunch are great Duskdeep, face of horror, tarn, coif, undead, and wormskull are all great
