Instead of unbolting the turbo I unbolted the flange that’s on the turbo and took the bottom 2 threads out and then re tapped them. It saved me a shit tonne of time and gave me enough room to grab everything out.

Hey Mat, I really love your videos, thanks for taking your time to share all this. I wish I could go for a 3" exhaust system on my DS22, but I guess the guys who do the annuals would drop dead when they see that the cat and the particle filter crap is missing :-) But I'm planning to at least blank out the EGR. Good advice. Cheers, Mark (from Germany)

Hey mate, sounds awesome. Looking at getting one for my nav. Would you know how many decibels it is by any chance? heard it had to be less than 90db to be legal. Thanks for the helpful videos👍

Hey Koby, I can't say I've measured it to be honest, though my Ute did drop out of its Rego period a few months back, forcing me to get a Roadworthy done. It passed the RWC with it on no problems, so I can only assume it was fine though I don't know the limitations of noise here. Definitely quieter than a lot of Harleys getting about though, that's for sure.

Love the vid mate, its help me getting out the stock exhaust. 1 question. The egt sensor . the yd25 doesn't have one stock im assuming so is it necessary to get one or can you just leave it with the bung in?
@mhstagg

Just leave it with a plug in it mate. Unless you're adding an aftermarket one, no need for it. 👍

I remember it being a REAL pain in the ass... From memory, I had to use a really long 3/8" extension bar for the socket wrench and hold my tongue just right... It was probably the most mongrel part of the job. Good luck! Hopefully you can get it back on!

Hey mate. Nah, I just bolted everything back up and started the Ute. If your oil and water pumps are working properly, you shouldn't need to pre-fill or prime anything.

How is it going 2 years on mate? I'm just looking at getting one of these myself. She's fucken rough but maybe some high temp sikaflex around the welds will ensure there are no leaks thanks to the horrible welds.

Yeah, all good so far! There weren't any leaks in the welds, they just looked as though they were rushed. Not bad value really though for the price.

@mhstagg 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathen, In my opinion, I don't think a Cat would make a huge difference. Cat's aren't designed to muffle the sound in any way, and most modern Cat converters don't place much restriction on flow either. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with the Cat Exhaust, but to avoid the drone, I'd still opt for the hot-dog muffler... Even mine borderlines on 'droney' with the muffler in it. DEA and playtime are much the same from what I can tell, except the dump pipe. Good luck! Let me know how you go getting it fitted! Cheers!

Hey man, ive got a 2012 d22 2.5L and have just purchased a 3" straight pipe for mine! Ive removed the entire exhaust minus the dump pipe and turbo, just wondering if you had any tips on how to unbolt the turbo and what exactly needs unbolting? I had a go today but couldnt crack the 3 bolts holding it in place.. cheers!

Hey Sam. Best bet is to spray them with CRC or WD40 and let it sit overnight. You might need a breaker bar on them too. The constant hot/cold/hot tends to bind them up. Theres another product called rustof ice you can spray on that sometimes helps too. All else fails, heat the nuts up, but be careful not to heat eveything around it too much. Hope that's helpful?

Hi Mitch. So far all good, haven't got any complaints. They do rub a bit in the upper control arms at full extenstion, not that they ever really get up there. But I think new Upper controls will be in the works in the near future.

Hey mate, do you think that could be done all from the bottom without taking the turbo off? Or will the cat / dump pipe not fit out past the d shaft etc?? Cheers
@mhstagg
@mhstagg 6 жыл бұрын
Shannon kupfer , thanks for the message. Personally I highly doubt it. Getting the stud nuts off the back of the turbo is the main thing stopping that. Also; getting the bolts on top of the stock Cat would be difficult without removing all the intercooler piping, heat shields etc anyway. And i honestly think you'd have just as much trouble mucking around underneath with drive-shafts etc. If you manage to do it, let me know, I'd be interested to hear.

Your video is good mate, helps people who are upgrading stock turbo/intercooler as well. I did this when I first got my d22 yd25, no mechanic but love working on 4wds so over time invented little tricks. To fit my 3" straight pipe I used a DEA one (Melbourne based too I believe) Replaced dump pipe only, everything else stayed in car so fairly easy. 1. Spray the fuck out of penetrating fluid on dump pipe stud nuts - 2. Go for a highway drive don't use 5th gear, or just give car a good flogging (idea is to get the dump pipe & it's studs/nuts hot) metal expands. Or if you got one (I didn't- use a propane torch but be very careful) heat rises always remember. - 3. Spray the fuck nuts with penetrating fluid again. - 4. As soon as you get home remove the passenger wheel for access. - 5. Trolley jack under the gearbox and lift it just a touch (this will move engine slightly forward in a angle giving you more access between firewall/dump pipe studs. 6. Ring panner on the nut behind the dump pipe stud (use rags to ensure it doesn't slip off under load. 7. Use a small ratchet strap on the other end of spanner and hook it up to the chassis or somewhere solid 8. Ratchet away to break the nuts loose- repeat. 9. Wiggle dump pipe off, clean threads, little cooper antisieze, reuse hardware on new dump pipe & fit. Have done this with my friends nav on his drive way too, the second time took me 2hrs over drinks because I already learned from my own painful experience 😂 hope it helps someone

Hey man, I have a nav d22 2.5 ltr 2013 model, can you tell me your experience with the 3" exhaust? I have heard different things i.e. some blokes say it's good for the engine, others say, it's bad for the engine. I am confused with the conflicting information on the net. Should I or shouldn't I put the larger exhaust in? I'm not after noise or increased power etc etc I just want the engine looked after i.e. working as efficiently as possible for longevity purposes. So what's your opinion?
@mhstagg
@mhstagg 6 жыл бұрын
G'day Ataman, Thanks for the comment! As a mechanic, my oppinion is that a 3" exhaust, or any exhaust system that reduces back pressure on your engine can only be a good thing. The only thing that will really be working differently with a 3" system is the wastegate on the turbo, which would open sooner as the turbo spools up more quickly. Best thing you can do for these engines otherwise is an EGR block, as that stops all the filthy exhaust gas getting back into your cylinder. Keep your oil and filter changed frequently, and if you've never done it before change the other fluids too. (Gearbox, Diffs, Coolant etc) Hope that's helpfull! Cheers!
@atamanatlas3098

Thanks buddy, that's great to hear, I trust your opinion because A) You're a mechanic, and B) You have no hidden agenda i.e. trying to sell a particular exhaust system or trying to trash a particular exhaust system if you get my gist. Much appreciated indeed.

I don't think so sorry Daniel, I believe the D40 has a different manifold and turbo setup and a different dump-pipe configuration. There are probably a lot of similarities in how to fit it, but be sure to check the parts compatibility before you order one.
