The determination of this man to machine those inside threads instead of just buying a tool for it, or even buy a whole new cyllinder, is what makes this channel remarkable.

To answer your question about the bolt vs nut to retain piston: the bolted connection is stronger for highly loaded applications. You can run different material for the bolt and have less chance of breakage than using male threads on the rod. I used to be cylinder design engineer for a major construction OEM (not this brand, but one of their competitors). Almost all our cylinders used the bolted type connection.

@@FarmCraft101 When working on hydraulic cylinders you always heat the parts you are taking apart as they are always glued unless there's a mechanical locking tab, but there still might be glue! The most common glue I've seen is the GREEN Loctite ceramic glue for fixing loose bearings etc. and that stuff MUST be heated to about minimum 250C or you'll end up destroying the threads if you even can get it loose....

This is a material availability issue right? The rod isn't available in the higher strength materials that screws are? I ask because at a glance I would say the tensile stress area of a male rod would be larger than one that was female.
@dans_Learning_Curve
@dans_Learning_Curve Жыл бұрын
@@court2379 the rod is only hardened on the outside layer. If the rod was used as a stud, it would be softer than say a grade 8 bolt.

It's probably wrong, but the way we used to machine chrome rods was to heat the area we wanted to cut to a very dull red with a torch then let it cool. After that you could cut it with HSS tools (dad rarely had carbide). The thinking was you're gonna lose the heat treat in that area anyway when you weld it. Same for the piston end, you're going through the hard layer anyway. You just have to be careful and not go too far because it will mess up the chrome. Seems like if you can get under the hard layer you can machine it much easier.

Wow, that was impressive. As all armchair machinists, I have seen CEE do these many times. But it is his specialty. It is something else to take this on an amateur, doing it with the equipment at hand. Probably you have seen CEE as the rest of us to build the confidence to try this on yourself. Says something about how useful KZbin is as an educational tool.

Do you ever wonder how many folks give a collective "THERE" when you finally get a stuck thread to budge? I always chuckle when someone who is watching me work on something that is stuck, and they really want to help, but it's one of those type of things that only one person can do. They give an exclamatory "THERE" when it breaks free; and I smile and say, "Man that was a tough one, thanks I couldn't have done it without your help", then we both have a good laugh about it. Great video John thumbs up.

Those 2 cylinders have given you some serious work out. Regarding the welding, as a former welder I can say that you have done a great job of living up to the "that's not going anywhere" quality label. Think that the armrests will be one of the next repairs, to work completely comfortably. Grtz

I’m really impressed with this job. I’ve watched your videos in the past but taking the initiative to do all of this is truly impressive. Awesome job 😁
