D3O Ghost Armour / Motorcycle Protection

I recently bought some D30 Ghost body armour for my motorcycle jeans, and I really wish I had just done this from the start. There is a trade off with comfort and protection, and this will depend on your attitude and riding style, so thought I would share my thoughts on the D30 Ghost comfort.

I'm a researcher on motorcycle PPE. The Forcefield Isolator 2 is one of the best visco-elastic pads available. The smooth profile protects you and your outer gear from point loading. The D30 Ghost is a cookie-cutter armour which point loads your skin and bones on impact and also will cause outer materials to fail sooner. All due to point loading vs load spreading. The D30 Ghost is a point loader and the FF isolator is a load spreader. How do I know, I test with paint transfer in the past but more recently with pressure sensitive film. This maps the pressure distribution and amount. Now, if you're a casual rider who almost never has an accident, I wouldn't be too concerned and comfort will be more important. As a tester and researcher, I do lab tests but also fall off frequently off-road in the mountains on rocky terrain. Sports riders, racers and track day enthusiasts should avoid lattice armour like the plague. Smooth armour with just a few vents will protect by load spreading more effectively.

Thanks for sharing your thought Martin. As you suggest, I think an important consideration is the type and frequency of riding you do. If I was on track, GHOST D3O would not be my choice, but for a short weekend ride, its perfect for me.

Just replaced the level 1-stuff in a jacket with level 2 ghost and man, did it transform what felt like an iron shirt to something wearable and well, jacket-like?

good video. I would also consider changing all your bulbs to led and using decent led headlight bulbs i use novsight. Switchbacks indicators are great and a denali soundbomb is an amazing horn not the mini version. I rarely use mine but when i do wow it wakes the dead. for a jacket always go laminated like a richa infinity pro. I finally added paragon 6 heated gloves and they are great. For great waterproof gloves laminated knox coverts are great but for cold heated is worth it

Cheers for watching and commenting. I have the sound bomb mini on my Bobber and I find that works well, and all my bikes have LED lights so all covered there. I don't ride much in the winter, but the few times I have I really wish I had heated gloves, its mainly my thumbs that get frozen, even with heated grips. Are there heating elements in all fingers and thumb with the paragon 6 heated gloves?

I've had elbow protectors rip after 2-3 years. Right now I also have the yellow ones from segura, level1 without the cage thing. Hopefully it lasts longer than 2-3 years. But how do the d30 ones hold up?

The D30 gear I have is still as new and no complaints. D30 Ghost is my goto now if possible, or just standard D30 if not.

I lived in Thailand as a diving instructor for over a year, I rode a bike in flip flops and shorts, nothing else, I was completely stupid and very lucky because every Thai guy/girl (the Thai are the kindest people I've ever met) I met on a bike had no skill behind the bars and they caused crashes all the time.

The D30 level 2 armour is THE most protective motorcycle armour on the world market. Your comment that the harder inflexible armour is more protective than the D30 isn't accurate. Its all about reducing impact and the D30 Ghost stuff does that like no other armour v its weight and flexibility. I'm a retired Met Police SEG rider (riding since 1979) and this Ghost Armour really is a game changer.

I meant slightly better (as per the text) that the harder armour I have is level 2, while the D30 Ghost Armour I have is level 1 (level 2 was not available at the time I purchased).
