Wonderfully informative video thank you very much. I bought an 885 several months ago, the hydraulics did nothing. I watched this video then and it hurt my brain, i didn't understand. Several months later i have just finished stripping, cleaning and restoring the hydraulics and now watching again this all makes sense. It's amazing the intricacy and tolerances involved for a 1970's tractor. All the best and thank you again.

Thanks for all this , I have "liked" it & will watch it repeatedly until I understand just what is most likely wrong with my D.B. , it looks like either a stuck hold valve , or a damaged , bent or swarf - fouled spool valve , this is a great help , many thanks for putting it up on here , best regards from central england , it has taken an intelligent Dutchman to show an English midlander how a team of English Yorkshiremen intended an hydraulic system to work , this is the power of both , people , & the internet , Best Regards .

I would love to see a video about diagnosing a no lift problem with a Selectamatic 3-point system. Cleaning the Hold and Bypass valves would be great also. Thank you for the information. The Spool valve only moves millimeters with the quadrant lever. I'd like to know more about how the Spool valve works also.

Very interesting. Amazing to think they designed all this before the days of computers, using just pen and paper and a slide rule and then implemented it without the precision engineering available today and no electronic controllers.

Thank you for these videos! You have taught a lot to this newcomer. I just took over a small farm and an old 880 that I'm just starting to get familiar with. Right now only the TCM operates to lift equipment (poorly since the cable was disconnected) and nothing happens on heaght and draft mode. The rocker lever moves with the switch so i'm guessing the spool valve is stuck. Can you or anyone here point me to the best videos to watch on troubleshooting or repairing this? The service manual has only served to confuse me on the troubleshooting since almost nothing works. I'll be tearing the hydraulics out soon but could use some focus. Thanks. Tom

Thanks for the video, My 780 has an intermittent problem. Where sometime the linkage works and others not. At least now I know that in height mode, which is where it's set, the spring & cable on the top link shouldn't come into play, I've been suspicious of that until now. I guess its going to be something getting stuck in the spool valve.

I'd like to find a description of how the latch valve works. I think there might be pressure feedback to the spring side.

@@D3Sshooter I normally live in the electronics world. If we need to convert an analog voltage into an unambitious high/low digital voltage, we will use a Schmitt trigger circuit which has 2 voltage input threshold levels.

Thank you for your videos - I have watched the ones on hydraulics twice and it has helped me to understand the hydraulics a bit better. I have a DB 880 selectamatic with a loader on it. Last winter, the loader stopped working (it would not lift) and I found a video about cleaning the bypass and hold valves with brake cleaner and it worked! Recently I have lost lifting power with the loader again (it will only lift about a foot). I tried cleaning the valves again but it did not help. The hydraulic arms are up so I don't think it is an issue with pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have an 885 that when started the lifting arms immediately go up. And will not go down regardless of lever position. I’m thinking the spool valve is stuck or broken. Do you have an overview of where the spool valve and other valves are located?

Thanks for the comments , for that you would need that extra 3 way valve and some tubing. Not sure if you can get those 3 way valves. I will see if can find some info on it.

D3Sshooter Thanks, that’s very kind of you. I have just been told that there is a blank port on the 3 way valve of the 996 which a pipe can be fixed to and led to the rear service. I’ll have a look at it and see if it seems viable. Grand merci!

@@sethbelson3539 , If you have that 3 way valve fitted already , then yes there is the outlet port for aux that will be blanked off if not used. You will also need a return line.. that should go back to the normal return path. if not you migt run out of oil for the gearbox.... its the same oil...

So grateful for this info! I have a 12 speed manual gearbox 1200 DB. our only heavy tractor we have a silage bale tray mounted hydraulic feed out tray. The chain is hydraulically driven by the auxiliary feed. A constant problem is occasional "freezing" of the lift in down position! - No lift... then th dang chain drive is dead ! Then it comes right ! cannot make sense of this intermittent malfunction she is a moodie lady. If you make it to NZ there is a venison dinner awaiting!

Thanks for the comments, and don't worry about the langue we all talk tractor langue. I would expect that the spool valves are dirty or ball valves don't close properly. It can also be the control link

Hi love your 995 videos - I have a 995 and the rear hydraulics have stopped working after standing for 6 months. Oil / filter changed as per your video but still nothing. Hold and bypass valve seem clean - any ideas what could be causing the issues ? I did bump a mower high at the end of last year and the transport lock engaged

It was to repair a short time ago and after this the issue appear. We guess it is some sort of worng adjustment or something is locked. Have you any ideas?

I have a David Brown 885 tractor and it does not life the arm high enough just barely off ground level which caused a lot of waterline chopping damages. I just bought the tractor and don't know much about the hydraulic systems and some basic operation of the tractor itself. Any suggestion what I need to check for basic troubleshooting...

Thanks for the comments , start with replacing the hydraulics fluid and filter. That is always a good starting point. Clean the valves , as shown in the video as sometime they get dirty. In which mode is it set... check that mode selector is working properly and is aligned as it should. I might make a video on this soon.

Hey. Wondering if you can help me out. I have a 1979 1212 David Brown. The PTO clutch does not seem to do anything. And the 3point hitch control does not select what is intended. The 3 option selector can be operated without pushing control all the way back. Can you offer some insight on what is going on and what to fix possibly.

great explanation, i just think that te traction controle option is a bit useless, you can just as well use the normal lift option, i might be a bit less exact, but then again, if you are plowing, you can always use the differential locking machanism. (i learned how to drive a tractor with to heavy implements and low horsepower, not like the high tec trators from know, i had to drive using my feeling to balance out the machine)

Allis-Chalmers had the Traction Booster system. My 57 D17 has it. It would automatically raise and lower mounted attachments as the pulling load increased or decreased. Actually worked quite well!

Is there any possible way to delete the selectomatic system altogether and simply use the hyd pump to lift, hold and lower the three point hitch through external modern valves and hoses? I'm not opposed to cutting drilling welding on my tractor as I'm not a purist, and I think that any machinery operated in the worst of conditions outdoors should be end user serviceable without having to watch 30 videos and read countless forums about owners with the same repetitive problems.

Do you have information on the hydraulic issues on a 1412 . I have a 1412 that I have never been able to get the 3 point to raise although it has two external valves over a distribution block which has worked in the past however it seems as it warms up it doesn't want to activate the remote cylinder. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also with a high pressure gauge on the cover plate of the remote Cesna valve I have never been able to get any pressure to register. Thanks Ernie

So if a -63 880 Implematic suddenly doesnt lift the arms at all, and the pump doesn't make a sound, even though it worked before it got cold (-20 below Celsius) would it be considerable that the spool valve has stucked/or frozen in the down position where it was left when I parked it a month ago? The lever feels kind of loose, the pin behind the lever comes out but no lifting. The oil is Q8 t2200 and the suction strainer is recently cleaned.

@curtrn I can confirm myself that my theory was correct. I made a fire in a bowl under the transmission and suddenly the lift started working again. It worked fine the rest of the winter but I always left it in neutral or lift up position afterwards.

@@MrJokkoma Thank you for the reply. The tractor I have has been sitting for 5 years because the lift stopped working and the old farmer had no use for this tractor. I got it started after about 20 minutes and 1 dead battery but the old girl runs like a top. It's now summer and very hot here in Tennessee do you think the fire bowl would even make a difference ? I was thinking of draining the fluid and running diesel thought the system to flush and clean everything. After a good 10-20 minute diesel recirculation I was going to drain that and replace all the filters. I have read that parts cleaner has worked, thus my diesel flush theory.

@curtrn As you say, I don't think warming up the oil will do any difference in your case since nothing is frozen now so it has probably stucked for you. There is some videos when a guy open up he's tractor and that might help you, if it has been sitting for a while with bad oil and condense water inside things might have rusted so the diesel idea might be one way, don't run it too long since the diesel whont lubricate the gearbox so good. Have you tried the little handle in the 2 positions up on the right side of the rearaxel? Mine first came to life when I touched that one. It's hard to know what has happened if it was this way already when you bought it. Likewise the valves you can twist also for sure has some meaning. It's not the easiest controlsystem to figure out for a 3 point lift if you ask me haha.

There is something 2 things that I wanna know: First- what is those too caps that sit close to the lifting lever that say " pressure" and " return"?! Second- Do I have some pressure output that I can connect a two way valve and a place for a return to the gearbox for oil?! David Brown 880 the 3 pt won't lower, when I start the engine the arms begin to raise and won't lower (unless parked a few days then they bleed off) the control lever seems to have 0 effect on any function up or down. Seems no shops around home want to mess with it 😞

My 996 external hydraulics has a problem. Example after tipping a trailer it takes way too long for the cylinder to come down, even if the trailer is a heavy one. Using the "dump valve" it has the slightest of effect to the lowering speed. I have already changed the quick-fit connectors with no luck. And the lowering speed is set to max. Do you have any idea where the problem might be? the hydraulics work fine otherwise.

Thank you for the comments, I would suspect that the share volume of oil in the piston to discharge is just way over the volume that the hold valve can handle... Are you sure that the rocker lever is not pushing in the TCU valve ?

Thank you very much for this video. I have been struggling a long time with lift issues on my 770A. I have had the chest out twice now. with no luck so far. I have lift and lower, but a leak somewhere in the system in that my pump is under load even in hold and as soon as I turn off the engine the implement leaks down quickly on its own and drop the load. Do you have any help for me on testing the control valve on the workbench? I have read and re-read the DB manual many times and other sources from the club and set my spool travel per the etched number. I believe I am replicating the leak out of the chest while it's on my workbench with shop air pressure, but I cannot figure out the exact source of the leak and how to stop it.

for a long time I believed I had a leak in the pipe to the ram. But I am fairly confident that the leak is in the chest itself.

after more experimentation and trials, I am now confident the underlying problem with my tractor is low hydraulci pressure from the pump. I put a gauge on the system via the ram cylinder bleeder screw. even with revs up the most PSI that I can get going to the ram cylinder is about 750 PSI. spec says should be about 2000 PSI.

yes, David Brown used to own Aston-Martin during it haydays and they continue to honour him by naming their cars DB. Incidentally my name is David Brown and I own three (two 880 selectamatics and a 995/996) and I joke that I own Aston-Martins lol.
