Hi Barrie - There are nikon and 3rd party - D series and AI series lenses have mechanical aperture rings. The 3rd party lenses are all over the place - basically bring your D5200 along to the flea markets and if the lens mounts and its cheap - buy it

Feel like giving you a standing ovation right now, you wont believe the drama underexposed video has put me through has an amateur...simply pressing down exposure or function key to change the aperture and ISO respectively was the deal breaker for me...thank you, thank you, thank you. Hi Matt - sorry for the delay, I wanted to test this before I responded. So you don't get an exposure meter but if you follow my directions in this video you can get exposure simulation through live view - what you see is what you get. Works fairly well unless we are talking about very slow shutter speeds. You can't go slower than 1 / 30 of a second.

Hi Toby....Great video as usual...so in a previous video when you were comparing the d5200 with the T4i, you mentioned that the d5200 won't emulate your exposure in live view...so does the d5200 emulate your exposure in live view as the T4i does? I deciding whether to go for a T5i or the d5200...thanks in advance for your reply.

Have you used the 18-55 on the D5200? It holds the sensor back - images viewed at anything greater than medium resolution look very soft. Put on another lens and that softness is gone instantly. I really wish it wasn't that bad. I have tried three copies and all produced the same results.

I think you are right... I'm used to operate the zoom durin shooting of video, works very well if you follow something, keeping the camera above the street level, or chatching a flying burd before it aproches you, it kind of goes with the swivel screen, I wish I had it on the 5200 but if I will be able to use my old lenses I'll do the trade in, it is a higher end camera, I also do a lot of macro stills so I should be fine.Thank you very much for your input!

On Normal quality you can go up to 29 minutes, at least that is what the manual says. Def test before tomorrow. I haven't spent much time looking at Normal quality footage so I can't really make any judgements if it is good enough but it probably is. If not or you want to shoot in high quality just wait for a moment of pause in the ceremony and start and stop it very quickly. Not the best option but it would do the trick.

All AIS lenses will fit. That is the great thing about Nikon. Basically if you can find a nikon mount lens it will fit on the D5200 - just most of those will not auto focus and will not have aperture control through the camera.

Great videos, very helpfull. Question: Focus Issues, have AF and manual lenses, but the AF will correct in the middle of a video, so I like to find focus then go to MF to keep it fixed. Do I want to have a higher depth of field for this (f9-f13ish) keeping multiple subjects at various lengths in focus?? Also how much ISO should you comprimise in lower light with the shutter only going to 1/60??
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
if you shoot at 24fps you can set shutter as low as 1/30 of a second. That is the lowest possible. I have found video quality acceptable up to ISO 3200, all depends on your needs. Yes I agree switch to MF, it is what I do. If you will have subjects moving in the video you will need to pick a higher DOF, keep it as low as possible or you will find yourself needing LOTS of light. hope that helps.

That's fantastic. Thanks. I don't mind manual focus. It will help me to develop my skills. Unfortunately your link does not work when I paste it into my web browser there seems to be something missing but I will certainly check out the lenses.

I make home movies and I am new to DSLR cameras. The D5200 (recommended for video) came with two lenses. Both are fine but I would like one with less DOF so that I can change focus between objects that closer together and achieve a soft focus background. I think that the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D would do this and add an extra dimension to my films but I can’t find a reference to it being compatible with my camera. I suspect that it is. Can you throw any light on this (no pun intended)

Why not the D5200? That and the D7100 are the only two cameras that match all your needs- Swivel screen, Wifi Adapter and ability to use your old lenses.

@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
At more than 3x the price of the cameras you are considering, without a lens - it should be:) The D5200 video quality is very good, with a nice lens it can be excellent. I just wish the 18-55 kit from nikon wasn't crummy. The live view issues in D5200 can be worked around. It's not something to get to hung up on.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
I have run into this issue before and my solution is to slightly detach the lens, just unlock it and rotate a tiny fraction. Aperture will be f00 but you can still shoot. See if that works for you and BE CAREFUL to not let your lens rotate more and fall off.

@tmfilmproductionshd747010 жыл бұрын
Hey Toby, first of all thanks for the effort of making your very informative videos. Question here... did you have a F4.5 lens on the D5200, or is there another reason why it wouldn't let you open the aperture more? I know the kit-lens can go up to 3.5 at 18mm and 5.6 at 55mm. That's why I'm asking. I'm interested because Im planning to buy the D5200 and kit lens for video mainly. I think I'm able to deal with the switching between live mode and normal, because it'll make me learn what Aperture fits the environment and it'll train my eye. However I have no experience with DSLR's yet so any extra info would be great.
