First u get the 2 years temp resident card them u have to get appointment at the SEF or renewd online ((for some reason I couldn't ,my wife did.) Them they will give a another resident temp card for another 3 years at the end you either apply for the citizenship ( dunno for sure for the requirements for that) but if dont want to you can choose to get a resident card for another 5 years this time the card dont say temp anymore and u are resident in portugal a not a temporary resident.Now if u have in my case a grandparent ( a grandparent and not a greatgrandparent )born in Portugal in 3 years with the temp resident card u can start the process for the citizienship. ( also having portuguese grandparent could apply straight for the citizenship without waiting,a whole different process and be patience mine is taking 3 years so far)

Interesting video thank you for sharing we have found the Portuguese are mindful that their system is bureaucratic and bend over backwards to help if you work with them. Dealing with VFS Global for the D7 visa was difficult and they were very unhelpful about how the process worked beyond the VFS involvement. The other thing we found was that no road map was provided with the D7 visa in your passport we hoped that the consulate would signpost you as to what to do if you wanted to bring your car/pet/household goods etc, each required lots of research. We did it ourselves but if you have a start date you are aiming for then I would suggest you seek professional help with your visa application.

After 5 years of D7 you may obtain citizenship, with Portuguese language proficiency as a requisite.

Was your SEF appointment automatically made for you as part of the D7 application or did you need to arrange that separately?

Yes the D7 appointment is made for you by the consulate as part of your D7 application you need to ensure that your appointment is in Funchal.

@@philgobbett Thanks. I have heard it done both ways by different people--either when securing the D7 OR after arrival in PT the appt is made. Maybe it depends on the consulate?

Hello! No Brexit 4 me, although I was in Devon - Teignmouth as a schoolboy in Hamburg to improve my lousy Argentinian English. I'm an EU citizen, so no D7. Everything was very straightforward for me. I went to the SEF and to the loja here in Coimbra (where I live since December 2021, straight transplant from Tigre in Argentina) without any appointment, and here I am. But my bank account story was not so good. I passed the whole 2022 with problems, and only opened a Millennium account after being in Madeira for the 2023 fireworks. I don't know if you have the 10-year tax reduction programme NHR or "Residente Nao Habitual". When it comes to the hurting moment of $$$$, this regimen is very advantageous.
