I am going to sell my D810 but not buy a D850. I had a realization at around 3AM this morning that I will buy the FujiFilm GFX because I crop to 4x5 just about 99% of the time and on a D850 if I crop to 4x5 I will have a 36MP file. On the GFX if I crop to 4x5 I will have a 48MP file which I think is significant - plus a larger sensor etc... If anyone is interested this D810 has about 4,200 shots on it... practically new. I realize tis is not the forum to sell stuff... just saying...

Why are D850's pictures so good? They just "pop" - look more three dimensional, and the color is so pleasing. It's a true work of art. It seems like Nikon is a decade ahead of competition in terms of their image processing. It continues to impress.

I have to agree and disagree Ken. Just for discussion.... As you mentioned you are looking at resolution...there we agree. The D850...Honestly I bought it because I am expected to own such things. The D850 is a pleasant surprise. Here is where the GFX is better IMHO Tonality, color, separation, contrast, saturation, overall image depth. Then there is that exquisite focus falloff. Glass is very good! These are harder to quantify on youtube, but they are real and they show up in print. I am curious if you can talk about any of these because I see the GFX is an artists camera, the D850 as just another (nice) hammer. Generally speaking I do not use 35mm in the studio...for good reason. Medium format is hands down favorite among my clients. They a little extra for a medium format session. (XF IQ100 aside here.) They can see the difference.....I know not every photographer experiences this....I educate my clients more maybe? I have a $10,000.00 Epson...maybe that makes a difference...IDK. Curious as to your opinion here Ken.

Well as it seems you were taking pictures from the same distance to your subject but not using equivalent focal lengths. Of course the D850 will blow it away. If you repeat the test and actually shoot the same frame results will be much closer.

Ken', sounds like you should sell your GFX and get some of your cash back! This video certainly dampens the Fuji hype a bit. While I enjoyed my time with the XT1 until the camera started breaking down on me, my Canon 6D still had better IQ. So if one can save over $3,000 (body only) and get 95% of the IQ of the GFX from the D850, it seems like the D850 is a no brainer. With respect to your comments about Canon going the way of Pentax, that is bit much. Canon is still the largest camera manufacturer in the world. In Japan, Canon had about 60% market share compared to Nikon's 35%. In the mirror less ILC market Canon was second to Olympus at 16% market share. Fuji was way down the list. As a Canon shooter, I concede that the D850 seems like a more exciting camera than the 5D4 and I have wonder about some of Canon's design decisions with the 5D4 and the 6D2 and hope the D850, if as good as it appears to be, will motivate Canon to step up their game a bit. However, the 5D4 is still a very good camera. The IQ, AF, and metering system are excellent and Canon renders skin tones more realistically to my eye than Nikon, and certainly Fuji

i do see that the color/skin tones is what makes the difference. The D850 seem to be red compared to the GFX. I wonder if they still make skin tones on the red side for the D850 since the D810 had the same issue.

One thing i wanted to add, is that i have never owned a Nikon, i will never downgrade from my GFX to Nikon, or switch my XT2 to a D850. I never liked the feel of the Nikon bodies while taking photos. A friend had his D810, and it just felt weird, out of place, the menu sucks, the handling of the camera was not comfortable. Just like the sony body being too small, the nikon falls on the same category.

I owned A7R2, and now I own GFX, and I can easily tell A7R2 is overall much better camera. And given the fact that it was released more than 2 years ago while you were still struggling to get sharp pictures with your Xpro1 with 16Mp Magic sensor LOL, this camera is still up to date with its performance, technology etc while 1 series x cameras are already junk...Needless to remind you that XT2 was the first camera that brought bragging rights to Fujifilm owners in terms of IQ, AF speed, video capabilities etc.. As for lens choice, I bet there are more lenses between 21 and 35mm for Sony then the whole Fuji FX and GF lens lineup..Only Nikon or Canon Full Frame Mirrorless would dethrone the Sony as Fuji made the most stupid decision to skip it. No matter what you say Sony A7 series are currently the best compromise in the digital camera market.

One problem with the Nikon D850 and it's a HUGE problem for buyers here in the Uk is that the basic camera costs £3500.00 ( $4740.00). Add to that, to get the 9 frames a second one must purchase the D850 grip along with the battery and charger from the D5. So to go on a "shoot" with 2 batteries and spare XQ cards the basic cost BEFORE one attaches a lens to the body will be in excess of $4500.00 ($6073.00) Thank you Nikon but NO thanks i will stick to my D3 and D500.

If your comparison is accurate (and I've no reason to think it is not), it seems that the D850 will seriously impact demand for the GFX50. Nikon has struck a major blow agaist Fuji's medium format prospects, but NOT against Fuji's dominance of APSC. Here are some nice cameras: X-T2 £1600 (some good glass), D500 £1600ish (lots of glass) D850 £3200 (lots of glass), GFX50 £6000 (very little glass avail except adapted lenses) - but the D850 images are pretty close to those of the GFX50. The D850 instantly overthrows the previous cost/benefit equations - OUCH!

wait for the D760 having 24-30 MP BSI Sensor with better High ISO / DR performance ; we will get what we want ; but yes it won't have 1/8000th SS, Low ISO 32 & Base ISO 64, 153 AF Points, 0.75x VF, 9 FPS etc. ; on the contrary it would have the dreaded AA Filter. So, yes few compromises. We can't have certain Pro & desirable features in entry level model. Regards.

You forgot one thing for landscape: the GFX is -10°C to +40°C (+14°F - to 104°F) operating temperature, the D850 is 0°C to 40°C (+32°C to 104°C). So are the G mount WR lenses, this is equal to X-T2 and the WR series of the Fujinon X mount lenses. I tried this with my X-T2 and carried it for 2 hrs in medium hard rain with the 18-135 on it, using of course the zoom. The only thing I kept away from water was the front of the lens ;) Guess what: null/nada/zero issues with the X-T2, so you will no have issues with the GFX under same conditions. ;-)

You are reading to much into those specs. The D850 will slow a bit at -10C, like 4% so full specs are not including -10c for that reason. But at -10c it still is 5 times faster than the GFX. The FF Nikors are great cold weather cameras, the only speed reduction is due to battery chemistry. My D800 regularly sees much colder. The only limit is batteries get sluggish and appear to drain faster in cold temps. It is not drain, it is slower battery chemistry so I keep a spare inside my coat near my skin and swap out every 45 minutes or so. Once warmed up a bit, its full charge is available. Same with phones or any other battery operated device. The D850 will be better for outdoor winter use compared to current MF camera

I'm on the fence for a fast portrait lens and have a good deal for the XF 56 f1.2, but if Nikon rides the wave once again and the quality is that high, perhaps I'll regret not going for the Voigt 58 as, who knows, I can be switching to Nikon in some months. Ken... Zeiss 135mm as apposed to the nikkor lense you used in the test with the D810 compared to the GFX is not fair. What happened to the comparative test? If the GFX was quite a lot better than the D810 then how can all of a sudden this be reversed to the D850? You also state it's a 'constipated turtle slow' yet you state this is what you expect with medium format.. Surely a more comparative test 'ie a landscape' with equal lenses is a fairer test.. I checked the photos and i think GFX colours and contrast are better. Dynamic range of the GFX is better than Nikon D850. So i don’t agree with you sorry. GFX is better camera

Nikon's own software fully supports D850's RAW format, and it has always been better in handling its own files than Lightroom. Though a bit slower. imaging.nikon.com/lineup/software/
