The low-frequency roar is an excellent example of British engineering. To guess to make a diesel engine in the form of a triangle is an elegant and beautiful engineering solution. And striking the attention of the British to their history. Those who honor their past will always have a future.
@chrisburn71782 жыл бұрын
It's cool that the basic opposed piston design was taken straight from a German Junkers aero engine, but the original was a square layout and simply making one crankshaft counter-rotate made the deltic viable. Cooperation at its best!

I used to be a signalling instructor at Doncaster railway school which was just over the wall on platform 1. My overhead projector would vibrate when a Deltic had pulled up just opposite us and all my students would go to the window and look out in awe at these magnificent engines.. halcyon days 👏👏👏👏👍

Thats what I call a locomotive !!!! I used to lie awake at night and listen to these blasting down the East Coast mainline through Newcastle in the 70's, such an iconic sound of sheer power !!!! So nice to see it has both Napiers installed.
@crazyleyland51064 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, all the preserved Deltics have 2 engines, but on preserved railways they often run on only 1 to save fuel.
@nigeljohnson80224 жыл бұрын
@@crazyleyland5106 Or is it because they were restricted on the mainline to one engine if they were pulling Mk1 stock. Mk1 stock was limited to a lot less than the top speed of a Deltic with 2 Napiers?

I use to stand there with my mum in 1968 and watch the Deltic loco's pulling the sleeper wagons. Those diesels seemed alive to me, and yes I wanted to take the controls. For a boy living in the old slum clearance area of Pentonville it was a treat.

Great video, especially when D9009 started her engines so well. The Deltic is totally in a class of it's own, there'll never be another engine like that. Great work on the restoration, you guys are champions. Thanks.

Very true - D9009 is in a class of her own with the great paint job and unique engine rumble and turbine whine.

In a way its a shame Deltics only lasted 20 years partly due to only ever having 22 manufactured and delivered to then British rail having only 22 in service did limit their life expectancy by comparison class 47s that were manufactured at the same time lasted 30-40 years over 500 class 47s were manufactured which meant they could keep them going for longer spare parts in stored class 47s could be used to keep other 47s going had 500 deltics been manufactured they would have lasted longer
@jpsholland3 жыл бұрын
Do you know this engines are actually developed for military speedboats?
@brucerogermorgan23883 жыл бұрын
@@jpsholland I understood that they were developed to replace the big Rolls-Royce petrol engines in the British PT boats as the Rolls-Royce engines were so expensive to run. They needed a Diesel engine that would fit in the same space and had similar power characteristics. Napier developed this engine from the Junkers Jumo engine, which had only 2 crankshafts and 2 banks of cylinders, but was similar otherwise.

Lovely. The rising note of one engine while the other stays at idle when pulling away into the tunnel was one distinctive sound I'll always remember with these machines - a modification BR added to tame startaway power delivery and prevent overload of the traction motors. Then would follow the twin roar as both engines take the load when the driver pulls the stick back further.
@1258-Eckhart3 жыл бұрын
You can't "overload" the traction motors by starting with both engines. The reason for moving off on one engine was/is Gasworks and Copenhagen Tunnels: There isn't enough air in the tunnels for 2x induction requirements.
@ChangesOneTim3 жыл бұрын
@@1258-Eckhart No, t/m flashovers happened quite frequently in the Deltics' early years. At some point the master controller notches were modified which helped. Then with the fitting of electric train heating in 1970/71, the circuits were designed such that one engine idles a bit faster with ETH supply switched on, while the other stays on 'standard' idle. When starting away, initially the traction power is only supplied by the non-ETH engine, then the ETH engine picks up traction too as the master controller is opened up for higher revs.

Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into six cars per units and also having three Accessible Toilets on that six cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXC, Gardner 6LXB and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and also having 8 DisaAccessiblelets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train? The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build a brand-new underground train station so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford and could they extend the DLR?
