I remember dropping everything and just staring at the TV, unable to breathe lest the magic was broken if I did, whilst I absorbed this performance! That sudden gut suspending absorption still affects me, EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! no matter the times I play it! 💖

Despite the hilarious anarchic antics, these guys were true artists. Thank you Paul, Richard and Tim for showing the World what Australia is all about. Time to go to the Irish Rebellion Monument at Waverley Cemetary.

Paul Mcdermott's voice is unsurpassed, but that really showed the their talent for harmony. Amazing. I only wish they had made more like this. How Mcdermott wasn't a bigger star with a voice like that, is beyond me.
@chugs1984
@chugs1984 4 жыл бұрын
Nah, i think Mcdermott's voice isn't that great. But he definitely knows how to use it, and more importantly arranging the songs so they let him show him off what he can do well whilst using Tim and Richard to back him up in the places where he is weakest. Like the Beatles alone they're ho-hum but together they transfer into mecha-DAAS

@@chugs1984 No voice is beyond a crack or two. But i have to disagree. If you see him in some of his more recent carpark type behind the scenes shows his voice is still something to behold. The thing is he knows how to use it. If he doesn't need to stretch it he doesn't. If he does he does.

Part of his issues i think have stemmed from the good old mental health side of things. If i remember he had a issue with a stalker also. He also paints etc So he has not always been in the limelight.

Defiantly the best Version of this song. Beautiful harmonies. The original Irish singers sing this really raw and scratchy. DAAS should have done more serious songs. Cause they could damn well sing!!

My Great Great Great Grandfather was transported from Cork to Sydney Town in 1818, on the prison ship Martha. He died in 1857 after earning his freedom and running a farm on the Hawkesbury river to feed Sydney Town. His “crime” was stealing a cow to feed his family in Enniskillen. I am proud to be his descendent, and I’m proud of my Irish Catholic “convict” ancestry. James Smith, my GGG grandfather.

Gives me goosebumps every time I hear this. I love the dead stunned silence at the end before the audience applauded.

Having seen this years before, I was walking the Royal Canal on Bloom's Day 1998 whilst in Dublin for a friends wedding. It rang through my head with every step.

Ok - here's a funny one. I bumped into Paul at Jamberoo - we were both there with our families- I thanked him for the entertainment and fun; he was caught off guard- he didn't expect to be recognised in oversized boardie's etc - but as we were dressed the sane - it was ok! Two middled aged men, with their kids at a family fun park. Isn't lie strange.

I love this. Their typical 'serious song' formation. They all look really good from those camera angles. Whoever worked that out for them was a damn genius. XDD ...I wish Richard would look at me like that. ;)

I always found the DAAS to be an overly smug and self-satisfied outfit and was never a fan of them in their day (though I did always enjoy their harmonies). But, my God, this is SUPERB. Pure class. Respect. I dips me lid.

Brilliant, as usual. I remember watching this on "The Big Gig" back in the day. This song has additional pathos and meaning for Irish-Australians, such as myself, Paul and Tim. There is the meaning behind "The Auld Triangle" insofar as for the Irish convicts, but there is additional meaning in the part about Brendan Behan. He was one of Ireland's greatest poets and writers. He was the voice of Ireland's workers and downtrodden. His funeral is considered to be the third-largest in Irish history, after those of Michael Collins and Charles Stewart Parnell, which speaks volumes about his place in Irish culture. Here's the original "Lament for Brendan Behan", sung by the Clancy Brothers. :kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnjbXoevaL-sbKc
