I never understood why scabbards cannot be used as a secondary weapon, you can totally disorient the person by whacking one of their limbs in a fight, depending how durable the scabbard is.

I can tell you from what my own teacher taught... There is are some drawing techniques that employ an initial attack, like a teep, to get distance etc. But even then I haven't really seen this sort of draw :)

Remember, many mercenaries from Japan were ronin and some even became mulitary generals and commanders. Yamada Nagamasa was one samurai who became the governer of nakhon sri thamarat province and was incharge of rhe southern warfront against the malays. So if you compared swords of sukhothai and early ayuthaya to late ayuthaya the dhab had adopted japanese and arab features while keeping their tradition style. There were exchanges between Thai and japan in other things too. Muay Thai was a strong influence of Karate through the trade route which passed through ryukyu islands

Why is the hilt so long if the sword is meant to be one-handed?
@Pahuyuth5 жыл бұрын
The long hilt creates a center-near pivot that enables a high rotation speed and complex movement patterns. It is also used for blunt striking at very close distances. It is said, that Thai sword pommels (such as the steel tip in this video) have killed even more people than the blade throughout history. Find more information here: pahuyuth.com/en/daab/

It allows momentum to be generated more easily so cuts can be made faster and with more fluidity.

Excellent techniques. Where can I find a sword like that?
@Pahuyuth4 жыл бұрын
Small forges in Ayutthaya. They have literally hundreds of years of experience.
@yankeejedi25754 жыл бұрын
@@Pahuyuth Could you give me the web site please? I can't find them on the internet.
@Pahuyuth4 жыл бұрын
We certainly would if we could and we would gladly support said forges, especially in times like these. The problem is that such swords are usually not sold online, which means that you will have to go there, ask around and talk to the respective blacksmith in person for „a sword like that“. It may sound a bit strange, but such swords will rather find you than the other way around. Therefore if you are just looking for "a Thai sword" we would simply recommend to look for something like that on Ebay. If you are looking for something to actually train with, we would recommend to start with a pair of those: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGKaqod7e8llnpo

Is it customary to discard the scabbard after un-sheathing?
@Pahuyuth Жыл бұрын
Depends on the situation and what you would like to achieve. The scabbard could also be used as a blunt second sword, since it is an arm-length object after all. That in fact was common practice and also original form of fighting with the double swords (Daab Song Mue). Learn more 👉🏻 pahuyuth.com/en/daab/

how, if i want to buy the sword...
@Pahuyuth Жыл бұрын
We recommend buying Thai swords directly from blacksmiths in Ayutthaya. Often these are small family businesses that have literally several hundred years of experience in the production of such swords and thus contribute to cultural preservation. We usually purchase our steel swords from 👉🏻 facebook.com/kaimeedAyutthaya

@@Pahuyuth I bought a sword like this one but I’m wondering if the sword in the video is the same one. Does the teacher use a stainless steel sword?
@Pahuyuth Жыл бұрын
@@TheOnlyNarwalrus We don't know. A teacher's swords came to him by chance. They were originally made for another teacher (red belt), but he never came by to pick them up. Due to the nature of these swords, they were deemed unsellable until a teacher came across and took them with him. In general we consider swords and other weapons as tools, which is we we don't care too much about the type of steel, but rather about what can be achieved with an object.

*Some facts about Thaiachira* A spin-off of Muay Chaiya, which originated from a student sports group at Ramkhamhaeng University and therefore has nothing to do with old fighting styles, but pretends to make themselves important. The chairman of Thaiachira (Kru Lamp) has no qualification as a teacher (Krob Kru). He has also never fought in a boxing ring. His sword knowledge is based solely on student sports and stage fencing (Krabi Krabong), which is taught at the university. The rest comes from Muay Chaiya, which can also not be called an old or a real Thai martial art. The Muay from the city of Chaiya mainly refers to a certain Ajarn Ket Sriyapai. Ket Sriyapai was the son of a governor who was active in sports promotion and brought Muay Veti fighters (Muay Thai) from Chaiya to Bangkok to promote them there. Ajarn Khet never learned Muay Thai himself. The only reason why he is called "Ajarn" is that he has written and published some (fictional) stories about Muay Thai fighters. Ajarn Ket came from a high-ranking family and therefore never fought in a boxing ring. That would have been inappropriate for his standing. His actual profession was civil servant in the building industry. Later Muay Chaiya generations (for example Ket's school friend Tonglor Yalee) mixed normal Muay Thai techniques with Silat (Indonesia), Wushu (China) and Jiu Jitsu (Japan). For these reasons Muay Chaiya, and everything that comes from this direction, can neither be called an old nor a real Thai martial art. This comment here meant to be a joke by the Thais. It is harmless and he did not meant that Thailand is more superior than any other asians. It's just a joke. Thais barely speaks english because they're an independent country. Some asia people might get triggered so i'm mentioning that it's nothing. That's all. Image him raising his hand while he says it. 😆

Would the main weapon of a siamese soldier be the spear?/halberd Cause fighting with a sword against the burmese whom had shields might have been impractical
@0860099706113 жыл бұрын
Yep, mostly shield and blade and spear same as burmese but most elite soldier use duel blade. somehow duel blade kind of common thing to see here for an medieval weapon even our war heroes were using duel wield. For I said blade not sword because from what I understand blade are 1 sided sharp not like sword has 2 sided sharp.
