You wouldn't think these guys would go together...but man, the smooth, clean vocals of Sweet, mixed with the raspy voice of Rucker...a match made in heaven.

That a song this old is so beyond powerful proves Brian Wilson was years ahead in how music is created...That was superb....Brian, your work will never be equaled.

I can't even describe how much I love this cover....Darius give me the chills with his soulful lead and harmonies...and Matthew you shine so brightly. Thank You!

Brian Wilson said he wrote this with Ray Charles in mind. Darius Rucker provides that soulful delivery here. Perhaps the highlight of a tremendous evening of music from top talent.

This is has been and always will be my best Beach Boys song...Can I hear an AMEN!!!!!
@shirleypena41334 жыл бұрын
@Milton Washington, Sorry, but you won't get an "amen" from me!! In no fucking way can this song even begin to compare to 'God Only Knows', 'Don't Worry, Baby', 'In My Room', 'The Warmth of the Sun' or 'Heroes & Villains.' All those songs are certified CLASSICS, and countless iconic songwriters (among them Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello) have declared 'God Only Knows' to be a literally PERFECT song in every way imaginable. 'Sail on Sailor' has a nice melody and an okay vocal performance by Blondie Chaplin, but it's far from one of The Beach Boys' best songs.

One of my all time favorite KZbin videos always go to it when I am surfing. Read some posts about who does it best. Sweet and Rucker hit it out of the park..Everybody who attempts to sing this song must ask themselves what in the fuck do these lyrics mean. Its a difficult song to sing. I just read recently that Brian Wilson did not write the stupid lyrics and because of that he never liked the song.......

Outstanding performance, Darius Rucker owned this one vocally, and I noticed Matthew Sweet playing an Epiphone which proves my theory that a guitar doesn't have to be super expensive to be a great sounding guitar

Brian is on record as saying he didn't really care for the song. It was twice released as a single, in 1973 and 1975, and twice failed to crack the Top-40, or "stiffed" in radio programming parlance. As a former radio programmer myself (ironically, I was a sailor, an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy at the time of both single releases), I think even though the harmonies behind Blondie Chaplin's lead vocals were superb, the song was so bluesy it didn't have that trademark Beach Boys sound, leading the majority of radio programmers at the time to not add the song to their playlists. All I can say is, no matter what Brian thinks, whether he was being truthful or his comments were out of frustration for the song's initial commercial failure, "Sail on Sailor" is an artistic masterpiece that has passed the test of time, as evidenced by Los Lobos doing their own cover on their 2021 album "Native Sons."
