I found as a new player to ultimate (not having played smash in 10 years) that picking up and sticking with my main made me a lot better than my main playgroup. However I found most characters in this game have some sort of gimmick that solves some problems but not others, and when i started seriously playing characters other than my main I saw these huge holes in my Gameplan that where never apparent because my main never had to deal with them and picking up another character with different strengths and weaknesses helped my fundamentals/neutral so much more than another 20 hours on my main could have. Similar to how only playing online builds bad habits for offline, only getting good with one character can reinforce sub optimal gameplay. But 100% agree with the last minute of the video where you talk about sticking on a character for at least an hour to get the 'feel' of how that character plays back into your muscle memory. thanks for the video Dabuz

I just found out something about olimar. If you throw your Pikmin on a platform like the lower two platforms on battlefield, you can do any smash attack or grab on it as long as you are below the platform and if that Pikmin is the one that is going to be attacking (or if the arrow is over its head). I just got a kill with this after my opponent blocked my Pikmin throw and I went to do up smash with my purple pikmin and the blue pikmin that was on top got the kill. Note: red,blue, and yellow when you pluck them can get on the platform and white and purple can't. Hope you guys try this out

Dabuz's main point is that picking up a secondary to cope with a bad matchup for your main holds uou back from learning the technique to deal with the matchup. Co-maining is a bit different than secondaries bc you're trying to prepare two characters for every matchup. So as long as you're not counterpicking based on your opponent's char, you're good.

There is SO much room in a fighting game to be fundamentally better than your opponent. Even at the truly top level low tier heroes have made things happen. I think this is especially relevant in a game that overall is as balanced as ultimate is. There aren’t many -3 or worse matchups in this game, and when they exist it’s often a pretty obscure matchup. When it’s not, and it’s say Pika or Palu, maybe choosing a different character altogether is the way to go. It’s not like brawl where ICs vs Ganon was a 95-5 matchup in competitive play. Most matchups are very winnable in this game.

I kind of have 3 secondaries because I (try to) play all Metroid characters. The reason is to make my play style less stale, and mix-up my opponents. If they are used to my Samus, I’ll play Ridley (my main) and do something that they are not used to before they adapt, then switch to ZSS before or when they are adapted. Also, it’s more fun to me because I can do cool stuff with one character, then realize I can do it with another character. It is slightly harder because sometimes I get mixed up myself, but it is still worth it to me.

I realize it is cheesy and is dumb in competition , but I just want to play Metroid characters and evolve overtime. As a said I main Ridley, and play him 75% of the time. I only use the other three in cases where my Ridley does poorly or if I just want to have fun. I do not really play in a competitive setting, as in playing in tournaments, so this is not really cheesy with the people I play because they know my play style with each character which is quite repetitive. I’m sure if I went into a tournament, I would immediately be sent to losers, but I just play like this for now. Sorry if you didn’t find how I play good or good enough for you.

I actually enjoyed playing DPit, though. So, I ended up playing him for fun a lot. Then I took a bit of a break from competing at locals, so since I was only playing for fun, I was going almost all DPit. I don't necessarily think that having a solo main is always the best way to go at low to mid level. As long as your a tournament player in some capacity there are times where having a better matchup can give you a slight edge on a person who is slightly better than you, or at least around your level. I think the important part is just cultivating your secondary and not relying on a gimmick to make it through a matchup.

I’m definitely better above average and I can 100% agree with sticking to 1 character to work on fundies. I played Sonic and Cloud in 4 and still do in this game and I hit a low, a pretty bad one. So I dropped Sonic temporarily and stuck to Cloud, I worked on my fundamentals, combos, etc and now I can confidently switch between both Sonic and Cloud, ive even started to learn Zss out of pure fun and while yes she needs work, my fundamentals are helping me out a lot. The wait was long but it was worth it

What would you say in regards to learning other characters to help learn mindsets and playstyles that they dont usually utilize? Like playing pac man or sonic to learn to 0lay kore defensively.

I'd say I comain Samus and snake. Is it still ok to keep plant as a secondary for ness/Lucas as Samus and snake kinda get demolished by them?

I don't know how to fight Samus lol. Lucas main btw

I agree with everything in this video. I'm a pretty mid-level player (consistent top 25 finishes in my 100+ man local)but I have a co-main situation (Link and Toon Link). I didn't even really want to do this, but both characters really click with me very well. I don't think it's a good practice necessarily, but it works for me

I'd get bored if I only played my main; I need secondaries.

I think that playing one character even when you get bored is part of the grind.

And that’s why I settled on Sheik, she has so much depth I don’t get bored. Like I pull off a new combo every day, it’s great

I'm average and I solo main pokemon trainer, New to smash ultimate I don't really know much about matchups not having played smash in 1 year and a few months. For example, if you're getting destroyed with a projectile character with squirtle, you can choose Ivysaur because he's got razor leaf (a personal favorite) So I'd switch to Ivysaur and fix the matchup. Saying again I don't know much about matchups so I might be completely wrong about this considering I have not played smash in A year. But 50 hours on ultimate makes up for that. (my opinion) I also don't let myself use any other character

What would you think about using a normal character against weird low tiers that annoy your main. Example: you main Olimar, but decide to just go Lucina vs camping Zeldas.

I Co-Main Corrin and Byleth for the sole reason that they are the same Archetype, being zoners, with different match-ups. The character I consider my Secondary is Terry. He does just as well as my mains in terms of results, but the quality of gameplay is much lower than my Corrin/Byleth's gameplay.

I'm sorry but I love my main Zelda and my secondary Byby, Byleth (M)

I disagree because one if your character has a horrible matchup like snake jiggly and two you can like have a heavy and little character or a sword character and a short range character but you have solid points.
@cyndawu19404 жыл бұрын
Personally, I discourage people to only main one character, or play only a few character. First of all, playing multiple characters can help you learn the mechanics in smash better. I recommend people to play different styles of characters, such as a zoner, a sword character, a speedy character that use fist and kicks, a heavy weight and item projectile characters. You can learn how different character works, their strengths and weaknesses, and you would learn how to deal with them if you face them in a tournament. Another point is that I feel that it is a bit disrespectful if people only plays a few characters out of 70 characters as Sakurai works really hard to create these characters. Despite my points, I agree some of your points too. If people always choose specific characters to deal with a few matchup, then it does not enhance your player skills. In fact, you are encouraging people to change characters to deal with some specific characters in tournaments. This will cause the tournament to become a rock paper scissor game, hoping to pick the right character so they can deal with the characters they do not like. This will ruin the tournament scene as people will be more reliant on luck and counterpick rather than skills and eliminating weaknesses.

I get where your coming from but you dont need to main a certain character in order to learn how they work whether its projectile based or sword based, you can simply just play the character to get a feel for them and they're overall tool kit. Another way to do that tho and overall the best way is to just play against the certain character using your main. About the sakurai thing I dont really find it disrespectful to only main one character because you have to know that this is probably the most popular smash game yet in the franchise and there are probably hundreds to thousands of people who main that one character that Sakurai worked so hard on. Btw i think your underestimating the word "Main", when you main a character your devoting all your time and competetive expirence whether its in tournament, friendlies, or even quickplay to this one character and imo thats a huge deal when it comes to maining more than one character.

This is great advice because we need to master one character at a time and not just play characters to make the game easier for you

I don't own ultimate but I play my friend who literally never stays on one character unless it's for a set at the end of a session. Like we play one game and he switches characters every game. Should I tell him to stay on his characters more often even if it wouldn't be fun for him??? Like even after one game he switches to like 20 different characters in a session.
@TSMetaux4 жыл бұрын
Unless he’s playing competitive and really want to get to top, no play for fun, if u get enough skill with one character to beat him when he play random character that he doesn’t main, hell switch, also playing every character a bit help to understand what are their goal and what setup they need

I main Rosalina and have a pocket Lucina, it's almost impossible for me to play against some character (e.g. chrome/ ditto) with my Rosa, and also it can throw off some of my opponents when they expected my Rosa. Lucina is basic enough as well so I won't really lose too much time practising her instead of Rosa

and what if i just get bored of fucking playing the same character over and over again and i need an alternative to not just get burned out as fuck but also to find an alternative over that annoying guy in a tourney that is kicking my ass with a specific character because the matchup is disadvantageous against my main?

Is PT a bad character for average players?
@Jacob-ne5um4 жыл бұрын
No, PT is a well balanced character for you to play, especially if they are as your main. They have basic fundamentals of smash in their kit yet the further you develop as a player the more tech there is for the character.
