Most people are unaware of this but dachshunds are the most fearless and aggressive of all the hound breeds. Although they look cute and comical, the nature of this breed is fearless. I have had three and the oldest one was a very predatory dog. She killed chickens, turkeys, lambs, squirrels and birds and tried to go after peacocks. some of our larger animals were able to stand their ground. Regardless of her crazy fearless nature I loved that dog. She lived to be 18 and managed to misbehave almost daily. My kids loved her.. She was the only dog I ever knew to steal a turkey carcass out of the trash and run to her crate with it. RIP Wiener.

Have a dachshund, can verify. She doesn't seem to know she is small and would absolutely take on a bear if she thought it would threaten "her" (my) kids.

My dachshund killed three wild chickens by herself. It was crazy, I never knew they were such good hunters and knew how to defend themselves. That's why I kept her away from danger or any other wild animals, but seeing this was shocking.

My dachshund can stay in the same position all night when he knows a mouse is hiding behind something in my house. And he would get it and kill it so fast, without playing with it like most cats do. He's in this sniper mode when a mouse is in his radar, and can change drastically into such a dumb cutie afterwards. He's so useful and such a loveable pet.

My Tisha lived to be 21 and was a hunter. Ate a corner of my drywall out to climb up into it and pulled a big rat out. They were clearing woods nearby to build houses and the wild life was heading our way. One day a rat came running across the floor. I didn't think she could get it before the rat ran under the couch but she took off anyway. She slid to a stop before she hit the couch. I knew she missed...until she started shaking her head. She'd caught the rat! Taboo..Boo Boo I called her (In my picture on the left) wasn't 10 pound even but she could give rats, snakes and birds a run for their money. Killed a snake in the house, a bird that flew out of the chimney and one day I was out back by the deck and she was barking within a few feet of me under the deck. I bent down and didn't see anything. I just thought maybe a mouse. I stood back up and continued to talk to my grown kids. We walked around to the front and sat on the porch. Boo Boo came around and wanted into the house. I told my daughter to let her in. Then Boo Boo wanted out. My daughter let her out and she came to me and I saw her face was swollen and a distressed look in her eyes. I thought she had a stick stuck in her mouth so I looked. Nothing. Then I noticed two tiny holes and liquid. I jumped into the car and rushed her 20 miles to the vet to save her life. I realized she got between me and a copperhead (about the only poisonous snake we have in our yard). I have a bad heart and if I'd been bit....She lived to be 14 and died in my arms of cancer. I tried to save her through surgery but it got into her spine. RIP my babies.

kwgrid Tisha never ran across chickens or snake. But she did a big rat that came out of the woods nearby that were being cleaned out to make room to build new homes. Taboo attacked snakes and I had to rush her to the vet for a copperhead bite. She still would attack them. She went after my daughter's chickens but thank goodness they were in a pen so Taboo couldn't get to them. I can't think of a thing she wouldn't go after.

I've never liked small dogs, but when my husband and I moved in together, he let me get a cat, so we got the dog he wanted, a mini doxie. I have to say this is probably the best dog I've ever had. He's loyal and smart and protective, but doesn't guard. His bark is louder than it should be, but he'd never bite anyone, and he's just the best! I never want another dog. If we do ever get another, it's gonna be another doxie! Best dogs ever!!!!!!! ♥♥♥

That is a real example of Doxie patience for you... I have a doxie that has been of great help in battling an ongoing rodent problem in our house. She has the patience of a rock, she will sit for HOURS staring at the spot the Mole or mouse is hiding in the wall or behind the furniture, and makes sure we know about it so we can put down a trap or flush it out for her. Doxies are incredible hunters, and truly fearless in this role. Even when they are the household lapdog their killer instincts are always just a blink away hiding behind those adorable disarmingly cute eyes and just behind that long narrow nose lie two rows of needle sharp teeth, the bane of anything that lives in a hole.

My mini dachshund was like that when I was young. He was just a house pet, not trained to hunt or kill at all, but when he smelled a groundhog in the yard, he became an entirely different animal. Oddly, he had no prey drive when it came to mice or squirrels, but when he smelled a burrowing animal, his instincts kicked in and there was absolutely no settling him down until he got the creature in his mouth. You could see it in the way he played indoors, too. His favorite game was to bury a tennis ball (his favorite toy) under a blanket, and then thrash the blanket around until the ball rolled out, and then go shake the ball around. We had to give him a constant supply of cheap blankets and towels, or this game would cost us a lot of expensive covers and curtains and rugs.

+D3mang3l years ago, when I was a kid, my Mom and older brother were watching the late movie and thought they saw something and sure enough it was a mouse, ( this was early 60s and haven't had one since) they were pulling out furniture from the wall when it came out and tried to jump behind my Moms Hammond organ when my doxie ran up and caught it in mid air, killed it and dropped it and my brother said went and got a drink of water. I think she got some good treats the next day. She was a great dog and great pet

Indeed. Small, adorable dogs indoors but vicious hunters outside with amazing set of teeth considering their size. Whenever mine plays with toys he wants to annihilate them and he likes it when we hide the toys under blankets so he can burrow and dig them out. But still he is such a lovable and loving dog, stubborn and self centered but still loving. Best breed ever. 👍

Hah, my old, now dead (RIP Eetu) doxie used to hunt Fieldfare birds too, young and stupid ones mostly. During hot summer days we kept our front door open and Fieldfares kept eating berries from our bushes and jumping on ground. Our doxie would lay low at the front of door waiting for the right moment and then run like a bullet and catch a bird midflight. But eventually the grown up birds wisened up and started to divebomb him whenever they saw him. He was such a sorry sight at the times, with bird poop dripping down from forehead. 😂

Going to just applaud you here for having Dachshunds that are actually healthy weight and not just fat sausages for once. So many people stereotype Dachshunds as being these meaty, chunky sausages when in reality their ideal weight and body shape should actually be exactly that of your dogs. Good job on keeping HEALTHY weight dogs. Especially for a breed that is notoriously seen with excess weight more often than not.

There is another video where a dachshund sets of chasing a pair of rhinoceros. They are one of the fiercest breeds. Fearless, stubborn and independent. If they were the size of a dobermann (and you can clearly se the relationship) they would be absolutely terrifying animals. (Not sayin' dobermanns aren't) There are several reasons they were bred to be small, one of them is that if a big dog had the temperament of a dachshund, they would be too dangerous to have around people and livestock.

My dad's friend is a hunter. He told us when asked about badger hunting, as what it was like, and what sort of dogs did he use, he said that it's rather intense most of the time. You know you care a lot about your dog, and when you send one into a tunnel that's inhabited by a vicious badger, you can only hope your dog comes back too. At times, when they'd return with the dead badger in their mouths, he'd have to sew his dogs cheeks together with a Stabler when they were torn open by the badgers.

Hunters in Africa had Dachshunds of all things. I found out why when they showed what Honey Badgers are like. They're even smarter and tougher than badgers. You don't hunt them - you hope they don't hunt you. The Dachshunds being absolutely fearless were the only ones who would take them on.

Reminds me of what you see on an African Wildlife Documentary. My Dachshund used to do this sort of thing all the time it was amazing to watch the instincts and process of the hunt in my own backyard or in the fields behind my house as a kid. I think the only difference is my dog would have attempted to dig the ground squirrel out first before waiting and stalking but every time it was the drama of nature unfolding. Dachshunds are hunting dogs at their core and that is what they were breed to do. Awesome music and beautiful dogs glad to see healthy fit Dachshunds.

On the grass lands we come upon a pair of Dackelsaurus Rex who have chased a small prey animal to it's lair. It's gone to ground but the Dackelsaurus Rexes are patient. They circle it's hide and then move off a distance. One hunkers down near the hide and waits. The other moves off out of sight. Have they done this before? Minutes pass and the Dackelsaurs wait. They are confident if they wait long enough they can make their prey lose it nerve and make a run for it. The prey sticks it's head out of it hide and carefully observes the Dackelsaurus near it. It's taken in by their short legs. It thinks perhaps they are slow and they are scavengers. It starts to think it can easily outrun them. But will it? More time goes by. Finally the small prey animals can take no more of the waiting and it decides to make it's run. It's off, with a Rex hot on it's trail! The creature heads towards the tall grass, hoping to lose the swiftly trailing Dackelsaurus Rex in it. But little does it know that's where the second Dackelsaurus Rex is hiding, waiting for it to make it's run. They *have* done this before. The Dackelsaurus' head pops up and it's teeth come down, closing around the body of the prey. As the first Dackelsaurus Rex comes running over to the scene of the capture, the second Dackelsaurus gives the captured creature a brutal shake, snapping it's neck and it's all over. The Dackelsaurus Rexes have triumphed once again.

I remember mine chasing a rabbit and almost got what she wanted: a snack. She lost because one, my mom stopped her and two, she got her belly scratched. Shes 16 now and she still runs like a pupoy. She keeps on hunting even if she gets scars that brave girl.

We had a dachshund when I was a boy, and she had some incredible hunting instincts. She loved go after burrowing animals whether they be rabbits, mice, prairie dogs, etc...she would dig until she got them! The dogs in this video looked just like her. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

We had three mini dachshunds that looked adorable but hunted like a pack. They took down a goat that wandered onto our property. My level of respect increased but in the back of my mind, I kept telling myself never ever fall down and be unable to get up!!! Vicious and courageous hunters!

I had a dachshund that was the goddamn Snail Terminator. She'd spend most of her time in the backyard running around between bushes and among the flowerbeds, hunting for snails. She did not actually EAT them, but rather just crunched them once and spit them back out. We never had any snail problems when she was around.

I'd trapped a rat in the attic. I was going downstairs to take it outside & release for the Dachshunds to chase but Buddy took a flying leap off the top stair, landed on the trap, knocked it out of my hand & me down the stairs. People, that dog attackted that trap & got the rat out to kill it on the spot.

I've got two Dachsunds (a long hair and a short hair. Between the two of them they've managed to kill every ground animal on my property in addition to a couple of birds (I have no idea how Ralph, the short haired, managed that). They are fearless to a fault and incredibley faithful. I've watched my boys take off to chase a herd of cows. We owned a few breeds of dogs, while I was growing up and Doxies are still my favorite.

He reminds me of my first basset hound, Rappunzel (the Bonehead). She was quite the hunter. When we had to put her on a diet, she would go get herself fat juicy rats for between meal snacks. Not one rat ever made it into our house because of her. I really miss that precious hound.

My youngest dachshund can cover nearly 100ft across my backyard, before a bird can take flight, and snatch it out of the air. He can also jump nearly 4ft and run about 7ft up trees after squirrels. His first mission in the mornings, go on to the back patio and scan for targets, lock on and take it out.

One of my favorite videos on KZbin. And about the dogs weight: I have owned or been around purebred dachshunds all my life. These are young active dogs and weigh just what they are supposed to. These dogs will eat whatever you feed them and to over feed and cause these dogs to become overweight is one of the cruelest things you can do. They will become more susceptible to back problems.

Love Dachsies, originally bred to hunt badgers, follow them into their burrows and chase them out so they could be dispatched with a sword or spear (pre gun days). A badger will chase a black bear out of its den, so a dachsie was bred to be fearless. The modern ones are smaller but still pretty much fearless. Perfect apartment dogs their bark makes them sound bigger than they are.

One of my mini Daxies raids rats nests and brings me live babies to look after : / she is very gentle with them. She was raised with my pet rats and loved to play with them. One of my rats and this Dachshund use to play for hours, running around my house, up and down the stairs, both would come running when i would shake the treat tin. Out and about down the fields, she loves nothing better than a good rabbit/deer chase, full on hound yodel and not a hope in hell of catching one, but a good run for all concerned.

Beautiful built doxies!! Truly tell they were bred to work! My guys caught a duck and squirrel and almost a rabbit. Ppl need to stop crying and saying poor animal.. its the circle of life and dogs weren't just to be companions. They were bred to put food on our plates and theirs and they love doing it. If it wasn't for dogs we wouldn't me civilized.. Look at dog history it's amazing. Doxies are of of the toughest dogs. Love the herding dogs too. I encourage their natural abilities but in a handled environment and do sports with my doxies, and border collies (:
