@@stargazerthecat she would start to make a quack noise when she’d be running around/doing lots of exercise, and once she got out of breath she struggled to get it back and you could feel her breathing rattling in her chest, she also had a few episodes which can only really be described as a dog version of an asthma attack. It was when the video said that dogs can honk/quack when they have a partially collapsed trachea that made it all click in my head. Luckily though she should be ok, it’s something that’s quite common in the breed!

my family had a longhaired dachshund named Moochie. he was indeed quite aggressive--when food was involved! other than that he was very sweet. at the age of 5 he got a slipped disc (i think from digging too much at the beach, weirdly), and went lame in his back legs. luckily with 6 weeks of crate rest, he regained the use of his legs and lived to be 15 and a half. they are definitely a small breed with a big personality!

I was raised by dachshunds, had them for fifty years and saw two through back surgery. The surgeon told us that Gonzo was not peeing as expected after surgery and they had to squeeze him to empty his bladder; there were concerns there might be nerve damage. We got him home and straight to the back yard and propped him up next to his very favorite thing to pee on. He peed. And he peed. We didn't think he'd stop peeing. And we realized that there wasn't a damn thing wrong with his bladder. The problem had been that the vet hospital had been expecting him to pee on *their* schedule, on a vertical object of *their* choosing. And that was not how Gonzo the Obnoxious rolled. He lived long and prospered, and is sorely missed over a quarter of a century later.

In German we call them "Dackel". we also have the term "Wackeldackel" which refers to the little statues some people have in their car that constantly wobble their head once set in motion. It has a nice ring to it with the rime. Also also especially in old buildings, it's not uncommon to have long, heavy pillows in front of doors so the cold air won't get in through the gap on the ground. The pillows are sometimes in Dachshound-form which is so fitting.

As a German I feel like many people underestimate that the Dachshund (Dackel) is a pure hunting breed and is still used for mainly this purpose in Germany. They need lots of exercise, long walks and a strict upbringing as they are incredibly stubborn. It’s also important to keep them skinny and fit, bc even slight overweight can damage their back in the long term. For their specific hunting purposes they need to be strong willed, independent and fearless to a certain degree. “Dachshund“ literally means badger-dog (like you said), as they are/were supposed to go inside batcher or rabbit holes to clear them. But you really can’t argue about the fact that they’re cute and charming😊, that’s why so many European royal families including emperor Wilhelm II held them as pets.

Ours seem to get angrier and more aggressive the larger their target. A bug they barely notice. A squirrel, they are excited and chase. A deer, the furhawks go up and they run to the fence shouting. An SUV, we had to get special clamshell harnesses for them because they were tearing out of their collars in a blind, frothing rage. There's no way we could protect a semi from them. They'd reduce it to drool-covered scrap.

It’s been nine years since my 16-year-old dachsie passed, and I absolutely love seeing other dachshunds just being themselves. Funny story! So, I was working at a Renaissance Festival, right? Well, some people bring their dogs. I saw a wiener dog across the street, and said, “Dachshund!” The dog’s head *whipped around* to look at me. Its tail started wagging and the owner brought it over to say hello. That was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. A dachsie who knows what it is. 😂

I've had two. These are the most stubborn, loyal, sweetest dogs I've ever seen. They adopt you not the other way around. I always say a dauschund is 12 inches tall with 12 feet of attitude. They don't know they're small and resemble a food. This is a breed that has to be socialized carefully but they are perfect for older owners and homebodies. They love cuddling with their humans and hiding under the blanket (serious burrowers as they've been bred). My family had a boy who didn't like anyone but my mom. He'd growl at strangers but would not go after anyone unless they got too close to mom. He was mistreated in his last home and he adored my mother, they were inseparable. I was tolerated because I was the cook in the house. He was the smartest dog I'd ever seen. I once told him if he caught a mouse that had gotten in the house I would give him his own steak. He killed the mouse and proudly showed it off. When he growled at me my mom asked what I did to him. He was clearly the favorite child. When he disappeared, I got my little girl. She was the sweetest dog I'd ever seen and I would have placed no money on her standing up for herself. One night she was outside my room barking and growling. She had cornered a opossum outside my door and was keeping it away from me. I was heart broken when she passed away at the vet's being treated for kidney problems.

This. So much this. My family has had dachshunds many times over the years, and they can be incredibly loving, but holy cow are they stubborn when they don't want to do something. And loud is an understatement. My grandmother's doxie was actually quiet and polite for most of her life, but as she got older and a little on the deaf side, she suddenly discovered her ability to bark, and could be heard from anywhere in the house, or even from all the way in the back yard, the minute someone opened the gate to approach the front door.

@@kcts7757 I think it's the fact that they _are_ smart, and stubborn, that makes people feel they're difficult to house train. Some folks who find themselves with a dog breed that's more stubborn than they expected just find themselves at a loss as to how to get an animal that's decided it's smarter than you are to actually listen to you. Especially, from my experience, with small breeds. These owners often seem to fall into a rut of "Well, I can just pick them up and remove them from X situation," or "Well, I can just get more puppy pads if they keep going in the house," because they're small, and thus don't make as large of a mess, and are "portable." I saw this a lot with my grandmother's doxie, and my stepsister's chihuahuas, where instead of teaching them properly, they just covered large areas in puppy pads and tried to "encourage" them to go only on those.

Or you can also say "Lovely child has many names" (it sounds better in German 🙂). The dachshund has 3 official names. Dachshund, Dackel and Teckel. And as so often in German, the meaning of the name disappears in the mists of the past. A possible explanation for Dackel could be the combination of da (chshund) and (te)ckel = Dackel. The Dachshund (or Dackel, as its more often called in Germany (also Teckel in hunterspeak)) really is a dog breed with quite some attitude. I still remember a senior one whose old owner (who used the dog as hunting dog so it was well trained) sadly had passed away so his family took him in. On a visit a schoolmate wanted to show off how well the dog was trained and gave him commands, which the dog ignored. Claiming that he was already a bit deaf due to his age he gave him handsigns at which point the dog deliberatly looked into the other direction, like i dont take orders from pups 🙂

@ClockworkEngineer
@ClockworkEngineer Жыл бұрын
This may have been rhetorical, but I'm going to answer anyway. It's because they were designed to be very aggressive hunters. Going into a cramped hole to, well, murder a small animal takes a lot of aggression. This is called "prey drive": the instinct to pursue, capture, and kill prey. Dachshunds are going to be little killers, it's just bred into them. This doesn't cause aggression towards people though. That's all up to how they are raised.

they were bred to fight animals their own size and bigger in a cramped tunnels. High adrenaline fighting needs fierceness. There have been news highlights of a small dachshund running up on a bear to protect it's owner. Dachshunds usually have a favorite human and disregard others in the house. My dachshund is a total mommy's boy and likes it that way. He has never been afraid to tell very large men to get out of his house and needs a little time to acclimate well to others. Overall, they're a great breed and aren't yippy and nippy like other small dog breeds. They're like a pocket hound. They're also incredibly intelligent and have HUGE personalities. It feels like my dachshund really understands what we are saying. When he was much younger we taught him how to differentiate between the road and the sidewalk and he refused to cross the road without a human to come with him. He was trained to walk without a leash and stayed with us the whole time. Never walked out into the road. They also live up to 20 if taken care of properly. I feel like they are the perfect dog.

My Chiweenie died last year. He was the most aggressive dog in the world. I loved him to bits but he couldn't be trusted around children. Rest in peace my prince. I miss you terribly.

My mom also had a Doxie named Elvis. We always got a kick out of his zoomies especially when he transition from the carpet to the floor in the kitchen. Once he hit the kitchen he would lose traction and couldn't control his movement. His feet would go 100mph but he wasn't going very far. Unfortunately his Cushings got so bad and my parents had to put him down.

We had two of these when I was in my teens. One was the laziest lovebug ever (long-haired breed). The other, short-haired, was 100% a hunter. And extremely stubborn. We had so much fun with her - we could just point at a random spot on the ground and say "mouse!" and she would dig a bit, stick her nose in and take a few deep sniffs. If there was no mice, she would look at us with a confused "the hell did you do that for?" face. But if she picked up rodent scent, she would go absolutely nuts. There was NO way to stop her once she got going. If you tried to drag/carry her away, she would wiggle free and sprint back to the digging site and continue. One time she saw a mouse or rat run into a semi rotten tree we had in the backyard and her whole body just went into bloodlust mode. She dug all the way through the tree with dead wood and dirt flying everywhere. 4+ hours later she came out with 2 dead rodents in her mouth.

I've heard some pretty amazing stories about dachhunds from my GFs family, who owned a lot of coarce haired dachhunds (10 at once one time). The one that comes to mind most is the story about one of their dogs getting boxed in by two badgers, they really did a number on him, his tail looked like a Z afterwards 😅 He didn't care tho, he just loved going after badgers, so much so that they had to dig him up more often than other dogs.

Watching this makes me miss my Buttons...he was a great dog. I remember him chasing one of my sister's boyfriends around his truck when he came to pick up up. Another time my parents had some friends over and the man sat in Dad's chair and Buttons sat behind the chair and growled at him the entire night.

My grandmother had two of these dogs, named Fritz and Erika. They were the sweetest, gentlest little things in the world, with the most polite manners. Then they managed to get hold of a chipmunk in the yard. They were so violent, my dad ended up having to put bulky lawn gloves on just to get them off the poor mutilated thing. And once we got the dogs cleaned up, they went right back to being their sweet gentle selves. They never showed any aggression again, and I adored them both until they passed, but man, they certainly earned that aggressive reputation. They may look dorky and adorable, but they can be gnarly little badasses when they want to be. That poor chipmunk never stood a chance. And I still have a soft spot (and healthy respect) for this breed, years and years later. RIP Fritz and Erika, and RIP to the little chipmunk who taught 10-year-old me why you should never underestimate dogs, even when they're little.

Finally! I’ve got three. They’re all nightmares at the groomer and I’ve been taking them since puppyhood. Touched their feet, whole nine to get them used to it. Nope, still assholes 💀 but dang if they aren’t the most loving, fun, sweet, guarding dogs I’ll ever have the pleasure of owning 💗

I have two dogs; one is a 15-pound chihuahua mix that no matter how much I touch her paws she believes I am trying to steal them and she with the most annoyed face snatches them away every time, the other is a 100 pound great dane mix (we think..) who has huge paws that he allows to be touched and held, I think he actually enjoys his paw being held when he is laying down.

Had a doxie named Penny for 14 glorious years. They truly live up to their place on the most aggressive list. Penny was very adventurous, yet trusted no one, and saved us from many a leaf and frightened and confused poor pitties. My friends would hear her barks from deep inside the house and ask me how many large dogs I actually had and to stop lying. 🤣 When she reached old age she’d bully everyone to bed with dirty looks, judging us all hardcore from her bed in the living room. Excuse me, HER living room. I will always love her.

I have a longhair and a wirehair at home! I’ve always had wirehair dachshunds growing up and have noticed that they have a bit more terrier in them. Loud barking, very eager to hunt, dig, mark territory. My longhair is used to just being a mamas boy and a lap dog. And they’re both so smart

Our Dachshund (18lbs) we had when I was growing up, she would go after big ole snakes on our property. Meanwhile, the 50lbs Blue Heeler would run to stand on the porch and bark to tell us (and/or the lil weenie dog) to go get the snake. Lol! We told our vet about the snake hunting habit once and she said when she used to work for an emergency vet hospital, they saw TONS of Dachshunds come through with injuries because they would be so aggressive towards perceived threats/enemies. Always getting in to fights with racoons, opossums, and other wild critters twice their size. She said the weenies usually won despite the injuries they came in with.

Both sets of grandparents had these dogs and I loved them. My grandmother had one she named Little Bit and she was the smart dog I have ever known and she was fearless. She would chase horses, goats, cows and jump from a diving board to play with us. She lived about 15 yrs and we were all very sad when she left us but she definitely earned her wings

I have a 14 year old Dachshund named Oskar. He's Bern my companion since he was 8 weeks old. They are such a wonderful breed of dog. Oskar does like to bark, but since he has literally gone everywhere with me since he was a puppy, he's never aggressive. He just likes meeting new people and wants pets, or preferably treats. Oskar is now blind, deaf, recently lost his sense of smell after some sort of illness, and he gets lost/confused, he has also been diabetic for the past 6 years and gets insulin twice a day. He has always loved being right up next to me and still does. We have a great life together, despite his age and disabilities. I wouldn't trade him for tge world

When my dachshund died suddenly of a heart attack last year I was so grief stricken I didn’t eat for 3 days. Even though he was only about a foot tall and 15 pounds he was absolutely fearless. The neighbor’s 100 pound retriever STILL gets a little bit nervous when he smells his old toys.

My mom had a miniature dachshund. Grew up with her when I was in middle school. We got her at 6 weeks and she fit in your hands. I nicknamed her Rat Dog (lovingly) because she looked like one at that age. I have never seen a dog with such a stubborn and sassy attitude. Barked at everything, possessive, and everything was hers even when it wasn't, would jump off everything no matter what we did. I've never thought about getting a little dog before her. She was like my little sister. I love you and miss you, my little rat dog.
