Wow!! thank you!! I am so glad I came across your channel. I do have a promble. My puppy is 7 months old I got him when you was 4.5 months from a rescue. I'm taking him to a babysitter for an over nighht. I'm nervous that he will cry all night long. He usually crys for 10 mintues with us but I don't know how he will be with them.

Great advice. Had a doxy for 11 years and was plagued with this problem the entire time! Now that he's gone I miss everything EXCEPT THAT! It was a good learning experience though. Now have a 3 yr old corgi, and yes they are very different, much easier to train and don't have the potty or howling/barking problems at night but I think at least some of the reason is from what I learned NOT to do from failing with the doxy. Would get another doxy in a heartbeat though. They're so loyal and affectionate. Corgis, yeah loyal but definitely not snugglers...

Thank you for the confidence in this approach. Day 3 new dachshund puppy trying tough love with a little spin. He cries I take him out he goes potty right away. I put him immediately back into his den calmly. If he continues to cry I've found luck by laying down and trying to sleep on the floor where he can see and smell me. This usually gets him to calm down. When the whining stops I return to my bed (fell asleep on the floor myself once whilst waiting for the whining to stop) not sure if it's the best approach what I'm doing it worked splendid night one... Night two he whined significantly more throughout the night but there where some different circumstances as in we layed him down for the night at 830pm rather than 11pm the first night. Plenty of exercise food and water - I fear he may becoming dependent to my wife as I reminded her what our approach and why we are doing it and soon as he heard her voice he went ballistic 🙄

I just got my girl last Friday, she's about 10 wks. I sleep on the couch in the living room usually. She has been sleeping with me since night 1, but I practice short stretches building up to longer ones of her in her playpen alone. There is a pee pad and a bed in it usually. I tried the crate but I am honestly telling you, it was insufferable all around. She was miserable, I was miserable, I am sure my apartment neighbors were miserable lol. As we speak, I am awake and she is dozing off in the playpen. Long term, I do want her to sleep with me but I also want her to establish independence. Hopefully my method works out. I only let her out of the pen if she is quiet or obedient. She already knows 'sit', 'stay', 'fetch' and how to go up and down her lil dachshund steps on command. I hope that indicates I am doing something right...

@@seanmurphy4333 so it's been almost 7 months now and my girl still bites sometimes, but redirection works the best i have found. we taught her "kiss" and she gives us lil kisses when she wants to bite and we just give her other stuff! it is a lot better, no more biting on my hair or ears or face for the most part lmao. she also can sleep in her crate by choice now :)

My sister got a miniature dachshund who is about a year old now. She got her as a puppy and did everything wrong with the dog. She let her onto the couch every day with a little stair ramp, took the dog out everywhere in a crate (she was never left alone as a puppy, always taken everywhere and anywhere), not crate trained so she barks and scratches at the crate door when she is in one, she struggles to go on walks, she doesn't recognise basic words like sit, away when she is begging for food or even "bed time" which is what we say when it is time for bed. She does know 'walkies' though but struggles once she is out on the lead. I don't know if she is trainable at this point to be honest, we have had the staffie breed in our family and have never had a little breed. Unfortunately I think my sister spent a ludicrous amount on what is essentially a noisy couch potato, she isn't a fan of exercise because my sister just carried her around like one of those handbag dogs and she basically only used puppy mats, never going outside for a poop or a wee. We have managed to get her to go outside and use the garden rather than puppy mats which is better financially and hopefully that means she will not need the puppy mats again. She isn't too familiar with her name either, she has limited recall and we now have the dog at our house through no fault of my sister's due to her housing situation but this dog's behaviour is just really annoying. I understand that she now has seperation anxiety as she whines if you leave the room, if you leave the house just to go grocery shopping, she barks 24/7 and we often come home hearing her barking away which I am sure will annoy the owners. She has always been pacified as it were when she whined, she would whine and whine until they gave in and this is why I really think she is going to be very difficult to train and manage. We had a dog who died last year and he was a staffie. We have gotten used to being pet free and having never had a smaller breed, we don't know if this can be corrected so she can live without whining etc. I think it's too late now because those things were done at a very early age and I don't think even my sister is capable of dealing with what I know is a high maintenance breed because she has mental health issues and is struggling herself so the dog hasn't been exercised which she really needs... not sure what to do at this point

We picked up our first ever puppy yesterday, a Mini Dachshund named Buddy. Last night we had him in our room in his crate with his bed and blanket. He woke up three times whimpering, we left a minute or so, took him out and left him ten minutes to have a wee on the puppy pad. We then put him back in straight after, no play or a great deal of attention and did this each time he woke up. We used a puppy pad as the weather was absolutely awful and with him being only 8 weeks thought this be best. Are we doing the right thing?

This is my second day with a dachshund puppy. We only let it out to use the bathroom because it pees every hour or so. We’re trying to not use pads unless it’s in its cage. Do you still let it ride it out even if it may have to go in the middle of the night? Just curious this video was helpful for sure just not quite sure about that scenario thank you.

Iv just got a dauschund puppy, and we have her in the bedroom in a crate of a night - at the moment she wakes up once through the night and we will get her out take her downstairs outside for a wee we then put her straight back in the crate and if she cries we leave her untill she falls asleep. Should we be doing this? I wasn’t sure if she needed toilet breaks and i don’t want to distress her if she does and we leave her in there but also I don’t want her to think that if she wakes up in the night we come running

My puppy is 9 weeks old and he's been with us about 5 days. His crate is in our room and I'm sleeping in way that he can see me throughout the night. He'll cry if we shut the door, tried sleeping with the door ajar with my hand in there and he'll climb out. I'm putting him in there during the day if he's napping on me and keep door open and sometimes close and will open when he's more awake. He's a bit funny with his food in that he'll not eat of mental bowls and prefers eating from the floor so tried putting his food in there but often uninterested. Is there anything I should be doing differently? I'm just so concerned he'll get up in night and I won't wake up. Room is as safe as possible but don't want him being unsupervised

Many thanks for the Vid, we are going with the first approach she is now 9 weeks old. She is doing amazing by going from 10pm to 3-4am I've been getting up then and taking her for a wee when I've heard her cry out, she does go but then stays awake after this. Happy to do what is needed but my thought process is that as she is small she needs the loo. What we have found is that at about 6:30 when we go down she has had a wee and also pooed which cant be nice for her and my wife is stressing as we only want what is best for her. Any help much appreciated

I wish you could come to my house and deal with my 8 week old dachshund puppy. This "letting them cry it out until they quiet down" thing doesn't work. Whether it's in her playpen, on her bed or the balcony, if I actually left her alone for as long as it takes, I would have the RSPCA called on me, as it would NEVER STOP! She gets worked up to a really loud distressed yelp. I swear the neighbours will think I'm murdering a puppy in my apartment. Am I alone in this? We decided last night to let her sleep in the bed with us. That's the only way she sleeps through the night.

Hello, thanks for the video, some great tips. I’ve been considering getting a puppy for months, I already have 2 adults cats and I’m not sure how they will get along. Do you know what dachshunds are generally like with cats? Can it be a good relationship or is it something to avoid? Also, I currently work from home (like a lot of people these days) and whilst my company are looking at a hybrid model, I may have to go back to working in an office; am I best to get the puppy now, or wait until my work pattern has settled ie do you think the dachshund will be better learning my normal work routine and not my WFH one? I’d appreciate any advice, thanks Lisa

Hey Lisa, thanks so much for watching! We actually have a video looking at how Dachshunds are with pets and children you might find helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIqrnWqMqc93m6M Socialisation is key when it comes to introducing your dog to new things and animals. We've got a number of different socialisation videos over on our main channel, Fenrir Canine Training you might find helpful too. To answer your question about when is best to get a puppy. We've also done a video looking at separation anxiety in dogs post lockdown you might find helpful when it comes to deciding when might be right to get a puppy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWi3amd3hs90oa8 All the best as you research ahead of bringing a new dachshund home!

I currently have a LH Red boy who is 3-years old. In 2 months time, I will be picking him up a brother! I am beyond excited but I am also super nervous. My question is, will already having a dachshund result in easier kennel training/potty training, or should I expect the same result of if I didn't have my current boy?
@fenrirdachshundshow918
@fenrirdachshundshow918 4 жыл бұрын
That's so exciting! Having an older dog around often helps with training as they are able to teach and show the pup what to do as well as you. If you plan a training routine before you pick him up this should help with any training you have ahead of you with your new little guy 😊

Started out in a crate in our bedroom. She cried, so I moved her crate to the hallway. She cried, so I moved the crate downstairs. She cried, so I moved the crate to the backyard. The next night, I put the crate in our room again and she didn’t cry once.

When you moved the crate to further position from you, what happened? Did she cry even more? I'm thinking of starting in our bedroom, then slowly moving her to the hallway then downstairs over the space of however much time it seems like it's going well?!

I think a play pen is better to let them sleep at night because there is more room to walk around and u can put more pee pads in it next to where he sleeps.

It’ll make them develop separation anxiety and it might make them more stubborn. I believe with a full grown dachshund it’s fine but with a small puppy you want to make sure you get them used to being independent and alone.

I think letting a child or dog cry it out is cruel and definitely leads to big psychological problems later in life, good way to creat a sociopath in a human, and lots of problems in dogs, so I will take the beside my bed approach that you suggested. I hope no one lets a dog cry it out or a child. It is a quick fix in the short term. but later you pay - its like pay now or pay later. and later you pay much more !

Very sound advice. I had a cocker spaniel pup who had a sock that had the scent of the mother dog on it. It was put in his bed at night and he only cried out for a short time the first night. Found the mispronounced dachshund a bit annoying, it's not docs it's dack

A puppy is a baby animal. How can you be so cold and cruel as to make them sleep on their own? All Dachshunds of any age belong in bed with their human. If you want a dog that sits over in a corner somewhere far from you, why not just get a stuffed animal?

I partly agree and cannot wait for my little guy to be able to sleep in my bed, but he has to develop a trust first. If I fall asleep, he has free reign to chew and destroy anything he wants, pee and poop in my bed or room. You need to establish some basic training, including crate training until you know he can be trusted. Once he can be trusted, he will be in my bed most nights.
@jadearrowsmith1603

@@ZrankFappaH It is incredibly difficult. I kind of cheat and wake up an hour or two before I have to and let my baby out to potty then I let him sleep in bed with me because I’m awake. But otherwise, I agree that crate training is absolutely necessary because otherwise he would pee everywhere while I’m sleeping and it would undo a lot of potty training.
@1suitcasesal
@1suitcasesal 2 жыл бұрын
@@ZrankFappaH May I suggest putting him in a small dog carrier and put it on your bed at night. Make sure he is warm enough. Dachshund get cold easily and like to sleep under the covers. Put something he can snuggle into in the carrier. You have to consider that as a puppy he has been torn away from his canine parent and family and is probably quite miserable and hurting emotionally. He needs to bond with another living thing as soon as possible, and that should be you. Of course we all know that it is our responsibility to provide for our pets physical needs but we really should put equal importance on our pets emotional needs if we want a mentally and emotionally healthy pet.

Day three. So the first night the little girl was great in the crate. I thought we had lucked out. But I think she was constipated and not feeling good so that was probably why she had been so good. Because night two she pooped three times and suddenly perked right up and wanted to play past 10pm. We put her in her crate and it was as if we put her on a bed of hot coals or something. She howled and freaked so bad she had my wife climbing the walls. I had both freaking out. I know you said not to bring them into the bed but that was right where she ended up. Content and fell right asleep. I woke up with the little thing right on me and couldn’t move. So tonight will be night three. I already told the wife she was going to have to get ahold of herself. She decided that the trick is to tire the puppy out. I don’t think she has wrapped her head around the idea that she is just going to have to deal with it for a night or two.

Don't put up with this bullshit. My dog howled all night every night. Mine did the same thing. I bought an electric trainer. I carefully read the instructions. I put him to bed in his oversized crate, and when he started howling, I hit the tone. He continued to howl. Then I hit him with the shock. He yelped and stopped barking. A few minutes later, he started to howl again. I hit him with the tone, and he never barked at night again. You don't need to struggle with daschund training, it's a safe trainer and works.
