I've had 11 daschunds in the last 40 years. I crate trained every one of them. For those who think it may be it's not. I have a thin blanket that I put over the crate at night, leaving it up a few inches to get a nice air flow. Put a nice blanket inside and they will burrow to their hearts content. Everytime they graduate from the crate and I allow them to sleep in the bed, i leave the crate open. Everyone of my daschunds get off the bed and crawl back in the crate for the first few nights. They think it is their den. This is the best way to potty train a daschund.

how do you avoid middle of the night accidents when they are puppies? should i be waking up every hour to let them out to pee?

I want to crate train my imminent puppy but worried about him peeing in his crate next to my bed!
@bellabonnie31413 жыл бұрын
@@arianavargas3999 I usually would wake up once half way through the night. When u wake up in the morning, immediately get them outside. A few accidents will happen. If they continue put something in the crate that makes it smaller. The crate should be no bigger than an area for them to lay down comfortably. It may seem mean but it's not. Like I said most of my dogs, when first crate trained, would get off the bed and go back in the crate. Its instinct, its there den

@@bellabonnie3141 thank you for the quick answer! and when crate/potty training the puppy, did you leave potty pads with him in there or just a blanket?
@bellabonnie31413 жыл бұрын
@@arianavargas3999 just a blanket. Remember small crate. Shouldn't be room for pee pads. It's like taking care of a new born for a couple of weeks, if there no accidents for 2-3 weeks you can cut out the middle of night wake ups and see how it goes.

My 2 dachshunds love their crate. When training them, I made sure to only let them out if they quit crying for at least 30 seconds. They learn quick! At night they slept with me under the covers, it was late winter, they woke me up when they needed out to potty, for mine it was usually once mid night then again early morning.

My mini Pippie does the same thing she sleeps under the covers and when she needs to go out she wakes me up- this is done by jumping on me then licking me in the face/ eyeballs then jumping even harder depending on how hard I am sleeping.

Thank you! It sounds soo silly but you finally helped us move crate training in the right direction. I watched soo many videos and read soo many blogs but something just wasn’t clicking and I was starting to think dachshund… specifically my dachshund was impossible. Then one little part of your video made all the difference… I was letting him tell me when he needed to pee which was just telling him whining got him released… he almost always peed but he was getting up more frequently not less. Setting the alarm and taking him out at set times and ignoring all other times has been a game changer. We are down to once a night and it’s only been 5 days! Thank you!!!

We had a dachshund for fourteen years and I don’t remember this happening. We put our puppy in the living room and take turns sleeping there with her. 😂 I love my little dog but I don’t want her to control us. I am going to try what you have suggested. I just got a sweet mini dachshund puppy. She is 9 weeks old. We are trying to crate train and her and I watched video and had a couple of questions. Did you take Stella outside to potty or was she pad trained until she was fully vaccinated? Until she was completely potty trained did you keep her in her crate and take her out only to play and potty? How did you prevent accidents in the house if not? Our little Ellie is a very vocal little girl and she hates to be alone.

Great video! My standard doxie never took to the crate when there were people around. She is very attached to us, so if there were people in the house, she would scream for hours. She was fine at night in the crate knowing that we were sleeping as well. We just got a new baby a few months ago and decided to use a pen this time around and its been great! Obviously the pen isn't the best for potty training, but as the weeks have progressed, she's using the puppy pad less and less and understanding that outside is for potty.

What will help is if your dog is not alone. If you have 2 puppies, then they won't be as sad. We have 3 dachshunds, and thankfully they didn't cry their first night because they were with each other. (they were all part of the same litter, and they were the entire litter.) While potty training with multiple dogs is hell, everything else has been much easier with more than one. This was the first time we had multiple pups at the same time, and We will never just get 1 pup again. Your dog needs a friend, and it will make a world of difference.

Hi! A few questions: How many times week 1 do they need to be let out to pee during the night? What alarm schedule do you recommend? When does the timing shift to once in the middle of the night and when should I implement that? When training for the release word to get let out of the crate, do you recommend doing this day 1 after they’ve been comfortable with the crate after doing those steps you recommended along with multiple breaks? Day 1, once you build up to 5 mins in the crate, are you affirming and providing treats for the whole 5 mins? When you proceed to the next step of going outside of the room for 2 seconds and coming right back, how long are they in the crate before you leave? 5 mins or shorter? Do you continue to provide treats in the crate after day 1 or will doing this for 7 days or so build the training needed? What size is this crate?
@susanhampton9671 Жыл бұрын
From your training experience, do you think it is better to get 1 puppy at a time or 2 siblings together? I don't want to be overwhelmed with training two at once. If the crate is only used when you leave him for work he might associate it as a bad thing (kind of like when you put your shoes on they know you’re leaving) so try mixing it up when you’re home and put him in with a special treat or toy when you’re home so then when he goes in his crate he doesn’t know if it’s for a good reason or bad reason and he will still enjoy it!

Hey so tips on potty training that I followed with great success is when they wake up potty, eat potty, drink potty and pretty much every time she sniffed the ground alot. We still have accidents but that's mostly on our fault for not creating appropriate opportunities for her to go potty. With some dogs it take time as they are still a puppy and sometimes don't understand. Following up on your puppy not going outside on the first night I had my Doxie I waited probably 30 minutes for her to go to potty and heavily praised so, just wait 15 minutes doesn't go come inside and watch them if they ho to sniff or anything outside potty. Hopefully that helps.

Hi there! I love your videos! I’ve been binge watching you cuz I’ll be picking up my pup in 2 weeks! 😄it’s my first experience with a puppy so I’m pretty nervous 😅I know leaving the puppy alone for the first few weeks should be pretty minimal at first since potty/house training would still be new to them, and their bladder won’t be able to hold much yet, so I was wondering if maybe you could lend me your two cents. I’m a teacher and summer vacation is starting for me when I pick up my puppy. So I have about 2 1/2 months with her alllllll day and night to train her. Do you think by the time she’s 5 months she can stay in the crate for the duration of a work day? Or do you think a pen with puppy pads might be a better solution? Just trying to think of the best way to leave her 🤔she’ll have my other dog with her at least! 😁

Yes she is! It’s not too bad actually, she leaves fluffs on my clothes and couches that I lint roll every once in a while, but I don’t find that I have to vacuum more or anything

What crate is that? And where did you get it? I’m getting a puppy in a month and I’m unsure of the size to get.

Does putting Stella in the crate during nap time help either crying or is it just causing to puppies?

Where was this video when we got our first dachshund 7 years ago 😭 I did not make small enough baby steps and eventually just gave up. I’m picking up our 2nd and am determined to crate train this one and slowly start working more on our 7yr old ween! Has anyone ever crate trained an adult dachshund?? And here’s the kicker… she is NOT very motivated by treats.

Every dog is different! It really helped with Stella but I’ve heard of people who never needed a crate so it depends on the dog’s personality!

My miniature dachshund took 6 nights to get comfortable with the crate. I didn’t know if I’d make it (the crying was terrible and I was getting no sleep) but after 6 bad nights, he slept through and has been doing amazing in it for 7 weeks now.

Just because it is effective doesn’t mean it is also good. I find terrible when people keep birds at cages, let alone dogs. But as usual humans are doing whatever is to our own best interest without caring how others feel. People commenting how much their dogs love their crate is just ridiculous.
